[The effect of hemosorption on the glycoprotein concentration of the blood serum in inflammatory diseases of the large intestine].

71 patients with nonspecific diseases of the colon were examined before and after hemosorption for concentrations of seromucoid, orosomucoid, immunoglobulins G,M,A, C3 and C4 complement component fractions, haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, C-reactive protein, properdin, transferrin. It was found that hemosorption results in lowering of all the above concentrations in nonspecific ulcerative colitis, except seromucoid and orosomucoid in moderate and acute colitis. In response to hemosorption serum glycoproteins levels varied with the disease severity, its duration and metabolic activity of the liver. Concentrations of seromucoids, orosomucoid, alpha 1-antitrypsin changed in correlation with clinical manifestations of colon inflammation and may serve as criteria of hemosorption efficacy.

[Orthograde intestinal lavage in the preparation for colonoscopy].

Thirty-eight proctological patients were prepared for colonoscopy by drinking 2l of aqueous solution of polyethylene glycol-4000 and electrolytes, so that additional purgatives, cleansing enemas, and waste-free diet are not needed. Control of hemodynamics, clinical and biochemical blood tests, and plasma electrolyte content revealed no significant changes in these parameters after preparation for the examination. Colonoscopy was conducted to a full measure in 94% of cases. This method was preferred rather than the use of purgatives and enemas by 82% of patients. Intestinal lavage with polyethylene glycol and electrolyte solution is a simple and effective method, it is convenient for the patient and does not cause marked side effects.

[The clinical information value of an immunoenzyme study of the tumor markers CA-19-9, CEA and AFP in cancer of the stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum].

Blood levels of CEA, CA 19-9 and AFP were assayed by immunoenzyme technique in 60 cases of gastric cancer, 15 patients with pancreatic cancer and 30 patients with colorectal cancer. CEA and CA 19-9 levels were found to depend upon stage and degree of tumor differentiation. Changes in the antigen levels in the course of treatment reflected the degree of its radicality. In application of the immunoenzyme assay, CA 19-9 level appeared most clinically relevant in gastric, pancreatic and colorectal cancers. CEA concentration can serve as an indicator of liver metastases. CA 19-9 and CEA levels can be used for monitoring and objective evaluation of treatment for gastric, pancreatic and colorectal cancer as well as for predicting response.

[Significance of tumor-associated CA-125 antigen in the diagnosis and monitoring of ovarian cancer].

Blood serum levels of CA 125 were measured by enzyme immunoassay in 60 patients with ovarian carcinoma during the diagnosis and treatment of the condition. The level of this antigen was found correlating with the disease stage and surpassing the normal value in 18% of cases with Stage II, in 62.2% of those with Stage III, and in 91% of those with Stage IV condition. Therefore, measurements of CA 125 may be used in the diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma, identification of the origin of ascitic fluid, and objective evaluation of the therapeutic effect. CA 125 is a IVth Stage marker in cancer of the stomach or rectum. Measurements of this antigen improve the accuracy of ovarian carcinoma diagnosis by 15%.

[Effect of infusion therapy on the hemostatic system of patients with mechanical jaundice].

The work presents results of investigations of the biochemical composition of lymph and the degree of its toxic properties in the process of its detoxication by lymphosorption and ultrafiltration. The degree of toxic properties of the central lymph when purified by the above methods was established to be considerably lower while the energetic value of the lymph subject to reinfusion remains sufficiently high.

[Elastase activity in experimental pancreatitis].

The activity of elastase, elastase inhibitor and isozymes of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was studied in 11 dogs with experimental pancreatitis and 5 control dogs. All dogs with experimental pancreatitis died 6--14 hours after the induction of pancreatitis. Morbid anatomy studies proved severe pancreonecrosis. The results obtained show that after the induction of pancreatitis the elastase blood activity increased 3-fold as compared with the initial level, and remained unchanged up to the animals' death. At the same time the activity of elastase inhibitor fell, correlating with the rise in elastase activity. Also there was a disproportion between LDH 1 and LDH 2 which became more conspicuous to the 3d hour, and an increase in LDH 5 by the end of the experiment. A conclusion is made that dysfunction of the liver may be one of the causes of the decreased inhibitory activity of elastase in pancreonecrosis.

[Heart preservation by means of hypothermia and hyperbaric oxygenation].

The efficiency of the methods of hypothermia and hyperbaric oxygenation for the preservation of canine hearts was studied. The cardiac function was found to reestablish itself nearly completely after 3 hours of preservation, despite some significant metabolic shifts -- disintegration of oxidation and phosphorylation, activation of lysosomal enzymes, reduction of the store of adenyl macroergs and biogenic amines. Five hours of preservation result in irreversible changes in the heart.
