Human bone marrow granulocyte-macrophageal colonies (GM-Cs) in vitro: myeloid cells in health and in cases of myeloid leukemia.

The morphological characteristics of granulocyte/macrophageal (GM-) colonies and clusters, obtained in vitro (in semi-solid agar cultures) from bone marrow hematopoietic myeloid progenitors pertain to leukocyte hemorheology of healthy persons and patients with myeloid leukemias. The morphological features of in vitro growing myeloid progenitors, granulocytes and macrophages of healthy persons differ in their cell size, shape and degree of differentiation from the cultivated marrow cells in cases of acute and chronic myeloid leukaemia. In this malignant disease, the rheological properties of leukocytes (granulocytes/macrophages) were found to provide diagnostic information. Further studies should be undertaken to examine whether the method could be useful in defining survival, prognosis and therapeutical approach in cases of myeloid leukemia.

[Trial of kormogrisein-40 as a growth stimulant in pigs].

An experiment was carried out with 36 pigs, weighing 8 to 70 kg, divided into 4 groups to test the growth-promoting effect of kormogrisin-40 given with the feed. The animals were fed on one and the same standard combined feed--a basic ration to which antibiotics were added in the form of a premix as follows: group I (controls); group II--zinc-bacitracin in conc. of 40 ppm; group III--grisin in conc. of 5 ppm; and group IV--grisin in conc. of 12 ppm. It was ascertained that growth stimulation was best manifested with group IV--the average daily gain increased by 17 per cent, and the consumption of feed per kilogram of gain decreased by 13.2 per cent. Second in effect ranked group III--13.0 and 9.6 per cent respectively. When concentrations of 5 and 12 ppm of grisin were used with pigs, and these were slaughtered without observing any withdrawal times there were residual amounts of the antibiotic in the meat and the parenchymal organs.

[Chemical composition of the meat and liver of pigs fattened with mixtures containing a bacterial protein supplement].

The chemical composition of the meat and liver of pigs fattened under production conditions was established with the addition of 3, 4, and 5 per cent bacterial protein to three experimental groups of animals, respectively. A control group of pigs was also used fed with no biomass in their feed. The trial lasted 104 days, the liveweight of the animals in the beginning of the experiment being about 35-40 kg, and at the end of it--100--115 kg. It was found that by the contents of water, total, extractable and protein nitrogen, fats, ash, essential and common proteins, tryptophane, and hydroxyproline and the index of their ratio, the pH value and calories as well as by organoleptic evaluation the samples of the investigated m. longissimus dorsi and liver of the test animals did not differ essentially (P greater than 0.05) from the respective values of the controls.

[Nutritive antibiotics and biostimulant preparations in the rations of swine for fattening].

Two experiments were carried out with sows for fattening having a body weight of 20 to 100 kg. The following nutritive antibiotics were tested -- bacipharmin -- 10% (PRB), zinkbacitracin -- 10% (UFRJ), vitamycin 3 (USSR), nitrovin (Peizun, USA) and mekadox -- 5% (USA). It was established that the stimulating effect of these antibiotics was manifested during the first fattening period -- up to 60 kg body weight, when the average daily increment of the experimental groups treated with bacipharmin, zink bacitracin and nictrovin in the I experiment was 7--15% higher and in the II experiment in which zink bacitracin, vitamycin 3, nitrovin and mekadox were added -- 8--14% higher as compared to the control groups. During the second period of fattening (60--100kg) no effect of the same nutritive antibiotics was observed, with the exception of the vitamycin treated group. In both experiments an economy of combined fodder per 1 kg body weight was realized in the experimental groups. Application of nutritive antibiotics and biostimulators during the second period is economically unexpedient. The antibiotics tested have no negative effect on carcass slaughter characteristics and on the chemical composition of meat. No residual substances of the nutritive antibiotics tested were detected on the second day following slaughter in the meat group treated with mekadox, since no sows of this group were slaughtered.

Adaptive environmental control for optimal results during plant microgravity experiments.

The SVET Space Greenhouse (SG)--the first and the only automated plant growth facility onboard the MIR Space Station in the period 1990-2000 was developed on a Russian-Bulgarian Project in the 80s. The aim was to study plant growth under microgravity in order to include plants as a link of future Biological Life Support Systems for the long-term manned space missions. An American developed Gas Exchange Measurement System (GEMS) was added to the existing SVET SG equipment in 1995 to monitor more environmental and physiological parameters. A lot of long-duration plant flight experiments were carried out in the SVET+GEMS. They led to significant results in the Fundamental Gravitational Biology field--second-generation wheat seeds were produced in the conditions of microgravity. The new International Space Station (ISS) will provide a perfect opportunity for conducting full life cycle plant experiments in microgravity, including measurement of more vital plant parameters, during the next 15-20 years. Nowadays plant growth facilities for scientific research based on the SVET SG functional principles are developed for the ISS by different countries (Russia, USA, Italy, Japan, etc.). A new Concept for an advanced SVET-3 Space Greenhouse for the ISS, based on the Bulgarian experience and "know-how" is described. The absolute and differential plant chamber air parameters and some plant physiological parameters are measured and processed in real time. Using the transpiration and photosynthesis measurement data the Control Unit evaluates the plant status and performs adaptive environmental control in order to provide the most favorable conditions for plant growth at every stage of plant development in experiments. A conceptual block-diagram of the SVET-3 SG is presented.
