Difference in the induction of osteosarcoma in rabbit bone with single administration of three kinds of chemical carcinogens.

A single intramedullary administration of each dose (15 approximately 20 mg) of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide, 3-methylcholanthrene, or 7,12-dimethylbenz[alpha]anthracene was applied to the mandible, diaphysis, or distal metaphysis of the femur of rabbits. The highest incidence in production of osteosarcoma was obtained from the group in which 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide was applied to the distal metaphysis (75%, including one case of chondrosarcoma). Tumors hardly appeared in any of the groups when given 3-methylcholanthrene or 7,12-dimethylbenz[alpha]anthracene. Histologically, three kinds of entities were recognized from the quantitative difference of the reactive tissues which appeared around carcinogens. It is estimated that the condition of entity III induces the highest incidence of osteosarcoma if chemical carcinogens are given into the bone marrow of experimental animals.

Milk sensitivity and soybean sensitivity in the production of eczematous manifestations in breast-fed infants with particular reference to intrauterine sensitization.

Three cases of milk sensitivity and two of soybean sensitivity are presented, suggesting that both pre-natal and post-natal sensitization may have been involved in the production of eczematous manifestations of early infancy. Hemagglutinating antibody titers against lactalbumin and soybean in the amniotic fluid were unusually high. This suggests that hemagglutinating antibody estimation against foods in the amniotic fluid may possibly predict infantile allegic manifestations in the newborn.

The effect of fat emulsion on essential fatty acid deficiency during intravenous hyperalimentation in pediatric patients.

A series of experiments on puppies and two newborn infants indicates that Intralipid which covered only 4% of the total caloreis, prevented or improved essential fatty acid deficiency in puppies and infants on hyperalimentation. This means that the intravenous fat emulsion, which covers about 2% of the total caloric intake with linoleic acid, still satisfies the essential fatty acid requirement, since half of the fatty acid composition of Intralipid is linoleate.

Animals

Egg sensitivity and eczematous manifestations in breast-fed newborns with particular reference to intrauterine sensitization.

In 10 newborn breast-fed infants with eczematous manifestations, sensitivity to egg was confirmed by indirect elimination and provocation tests in the mother and direct provocation and elimination tests in the infant in the weaning period. In almost all of the mothers hemagglutinating antibody titers against egg were high in the amniotic fluid. The role of intra-uterine sensitization to food in the etiology of eczematous manifestations in newborn breast-fed infants is discussed.
