We present the findings in a man with longstanding airway obstruction attributed to chronic obstructive bronchopulmonary disease. After hospitalization, a tracheal hamartoma was found and resected, without complications. Symptoms of chronic airway obstruction can cause the physician to treat medically a surgically curable lesion.
It is concluded that sputum cytopathology is an excellent, simple, noninvasive, painless, and inexpensive means for early detection of malignant and premalignant lesions of the lung, and that no special techniques are necessary for the identification of ferruginous bodies.
