[A new approach to cholesterol].

Although much is known about hypercholesterolemia and the associated risk for the development of atherosclerosis, very little research has focused on altered cholesterol biosynthesis. Recent discovery that the biochemical basis for the human malformation syndrome, Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome appears to lie in altered cholesterol biosynthesis has changed this situation. Cholesterol has an extraordinary important functions in organism. Recommendations to lower serum cholesterol are widespread, yet low serum cholesterol is associated with poorly understood morbidity. Cholesterol is still an enigmatic, essential metabolite and much remains to learn about it.

Dose-dependent hypocholesterolaemic effect of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) in rats.

A highly significant negative correlation (r=-0.981, p < 0.001) between the amount of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) in the diet and cholesterol levels in the serum has been found in male Wistar rats fed shortly after weaning by a a diet with 0.3% cholesterol. The addition of 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0% of oyster mushroom to the diet reduced the levels of serum cholesterol by 11, 31 and 46%, respectively. The diet containing 5% of oyster mushroom suppressed cholesterol accumulation in the liver and increased the fraction of cholesterol carried by high-density lipoproteins.

Serum copper and zinc in industrial centers in Slovakia.

The association between serum copper and zinc concentrations and age, sex, and other risk factors of cardiovascular disease in randomly selected adult volunteers aged 19-59 were investigated. There was a positive relationship between copper and age in both sexes, but zinc was negatively correlated with age in males only. Serum zinc was positively related to HDL-cholesterol in males. Serum copper was positively related to total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol but negatively correlated to HDL-cholesterol in males. A positive relationship to body mass index was observed in females only. Subjects have been divided into a control group and a group with marked risk factors of cardiovascular disease. The levels of zinc were not different, whereas the levels of copper in both males and females were significantly higher in the risk group. Our results suggested a positive relationship between serum copper and cumulation of more factors of cardiovascular disease, however, their causal effect in human has to be investigated further.

[New recommendations for nutritional requirements for the Czechoslovak population].

The authors present new recommended energy and nutrient allowances for the population of CSFR. The allowances are defined for 29 physiological groups, incl. 11 groups of children and adolescents and 18 groups of adults (productive age and more advanced age groups). The recommended allowances are the result of research of two teams--a Czech and a Slovak one--, results are published in the world literature, FAO and WHO reports. The recommended system can be considered an important step in the area of nutritional prevention of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity.

[Serum lipids in obese persons in a selected population in the Slovak Republic].

Serum lipid levels were determined in 287 obese subjects and the findings were compared with the mean values recorded in a representative series of the population of the Slovak Republic (n = 3433). Comparison of serum lipid values in age-matched groups from the two series showed the following results: significant increase of triacylglycerols in obese men aged 15-55 y, in obese women aged 15-35 y; significant increase of total cholesterol in obese men aged 26-55 y, in obese women aged 26-35 y; significant reduction of HDL cholesterol in obese men after 25 years of age and in obese women after 35 years of age. Obesity was found to increase significantly serum lipid levels, particularly in men with predominant central-abdominal type of obesity.
