Ectopic bilharziasis.

Ectopic Bilharziasis is discussed and two cases of ectopic pharyngeal affections are reported. The five theories advocated to explain how ectopic lesions can develop outside the portol-caval system are discussed. The clinical picture, age, diagnosis and follow-up of such lesions are mentioned.

Study on the innervation of the pancreas of the rat.

The pancreas of the adult rat is examined by the silver impregnation method. The intrapancreatic nerves form the following three plexuses: periacinous, periinsular and perivascular; anastomosing fibers are presented between the three plexuses. Sympathetic ganglia as well as parasympathetic nerve cells are met with in association and in close proximity to the islet tissue. The significance of the double innervation of the islet tissue is discussed.

Effect of vagotomy on the afferent innervation of cat pancreas.

The afferent innervation of the pancreas was studied with Holme's silver technique in normal and vagotomized cats 24, 48 and 72 hours after sectioning the vagus. Pacinian corpuscles were found in the interlobular and periductal connective tissue. After right vagotomy, degenerative changes were noticed among some of the nerve fibres entering the formation of the perivascular, periacinar, peri-insular and periductal plexuses. Moreover, degenerative changes were noticed in most of the Pacinian corpuscles while others remained unaffected, thus denoting that the right vagus was not the only pathway of the afferent nerve fibres from the pancreas and probably the left vagus contributed in that domain.

Polymer-ceramic composite for tooth-root implant.

A new polymer-ceramic composite suitable for tooth-root implants has been developed in this study. This material exhibited the desirable combination of good mechanical properties, controlled porosity, and ease of processing. A thermal processing technique was utilized to polymerize acrylic acid (AA) in the presence of either 0.3 or 0.05 mu alumina particles. Porosity and pore size distribution were influenced by the alumina particle size and the processing technique. For a 50 vol % AA solution, the composite had an average compressive strength of 18,000 psi and 38% porosity when 0.3 mu filler particles were used. In comparison, the 0.05 mu alumina-filled composite had an average compressive strength of 28,000 psi with a 15% porosity. Data on the physical and structural characteristics of the composite are presented in this study. Based on these results, the composite material shows good potential for use in tooth-root implants as well as other orthopedic implant applications.

Comparative microscopical study of the gall bladder mucosa.

The gall bladder from 6 Psammophis sibilans, 10 Bufo regularis and 10 Albino mice were extracted and prepared for microscopic examination. It was found that the mucosa of Psammophis sibilans consisted of ovoid and polygonal cells which were occasionally binucleated cells with darkly stained nuclei and occasionally pear-shaped cells with vesicular nuclei and fine processes. These cells were arranged in three layers. Apossible explanation for the different types of cells encountered and their arrangement was given. The gall bladder mucosa of Bufo regularis and Albino mouse were thrown into folds covered with simple columnar epithelium. However, the epithelium of the frog was higher than that of the mouse, with the nuclei situated midway between basement membrane and the lumen. Vacuolated cells were detected in the gall bladder mucosa of the mouse. The significance of the mucosal folds was discussed.

Animals

Intrinsic innervation of the gall bladder in the dog.

The gall bladder of eight dogs 3 months old were extracted and studied by the Holme's and Gross-Bielschowsky techniques. The nerves were found to form an extensive network within the wall of the gall bladder. However, 5 plexuses were identified and their arrangement was similar to that in the wall of the intestine. Nerve cells were only found in relation with the myenteric plexus. Moreover, knob-like terminals and circular type of nerve endings were noticed on the muscularis. The findings of the intrinsic innervation of the gall bladder of the dog were compared with that of man, monkey and guinea pig and the significance of that innervation was discussed.

Autonomic neuropathy of the adrenal gland of rats after alloxan diabetes.

Six alloxan-diabetic male rats with blood glucose levels between 250 and 420% were sacrificed. Their adrenal glands were extracted and studied by Holmes technique and the modified Gross Bielschowsky stain. Degenerative changes in the nerve fibres ending in the cortex and those reaching the medulla were noticed together with chromatolysis of the chromaffin cells. These findings are similar to the autonomic neuropathies described by other workers in the digestive tract and urinary bladder. This work gives histological evidence of the biochemical findings of reduced plasma catecholamines in longstanding human diabetics.
