[Suicide attempts among the elderly].

The purpose of the study is to describe the life stories leading to the suicide attempts. In-depth interviews with nine persons who had attempted suicide (six females and three males, mean age 73 years) were analysed using a qualitative method. Five categories describe the main interview topics: "I had to leave home to survive." (childhood, youth), "You have to bear it." (adult life), "I will manage, I always have." (present life), "You have to give in order to get. If you have nothing to offer, then life is not worth living." (expectations for future life), "I want to decide my own life." (reflections concerning the suicide attempt). The life stories have a common theme; the patients grew up under very difficult conditions and had little emotional support. Their basic trust was poorly developed and their self-esteem was dependent on their capability to work and to give. Without this capability they felt worthless, and life was unbearable. Attempted suicide was the consequence.

[Death assistance and terminal care--at the hospital].

Euthanasia, i.e. active termination of life in a seriously ill patient, is not performed in Norway at present. Between active and so-called passive euthanasia there is a "grey zone", and it is discussed where the border should be drawn, how and by whom. The decision to treat or not is becoming increasingly difficult, due to technical advances in the development of life-supporting devices. There is increasing sympathy for the view that it is not the duty of the medical profession to prolong the life of patients under all circumstances. The present paper discusses such problems in relation to hospitalized patients in an acute life-threatening situation, and in patients with, known, chronic disabling, or malignant disease.

[Geriatric rehabilitation].

With an ever increasing percentage of old people in the population it is important to consider that this patient group has special health problems and represents a new challenge to the health service. Geriatric rehabilitation will be an important field in medical care of the elderly. The article describes the organisation and working methods of a geriatric rehabilitation unit at Ullevål Hospital, Oslo. The article describes the results of rehabilitation in an old and disabled group of patients. To achieve good results in geriatric rehabilitation it is important to change traditional hospital and working routines. Experiments in this field should be encouraged.

Radiotherapy of metastases from renal cancer.

The subjective and objective response was evaluated retrospectively in 27 patients (30 radiotherapy series), who were treated by irradiation to metastatic lesions from renal cancer. Subjective response was noted in 16 of 19 evaluable patients. Objective regression was documented in 13 of 26 patients in whom the response could be judged using objective parameters. 30-40 Gy given over a 2- to 4-week period were enough to result in a response in most of the patients. Irradiation of mestastases from renal cancer represents an effective palliation treatment and should be considered in cases of painful local symptoms due to metastatic lesions.

Postirradiation changes of the liver demonstrated by computed tomography.

Postirradiation changes of a liver containing a lesion as demonstrated by computed tomography (CT) is described. After treatments of 2,000 and 3,000 rad (20 and 30 Gy), the size of the mass decreased and CT showed a region with low attentuation and sharp, straight borders, corresponding to the radiation portal.
