[Prophylaxis with tercef of infection-related complications after cesarean section].

The purpose of this prospective and case controlled study is to determine the effectiveness and safety of antibiotic prophylaxis with Tercef (ceftriaxone) in women undergoing cesarean section and to compare the results with those of 24 hours regiment of Cefazolin and also with a group without prophylaxis. The study includes 122 cases of elective and emergency CS: 41 with a single intravenous dose of 1.0 g Tercef after clamping of the umbilical cord; 41 cases of antibiotic prophylaxis with Cefazolin three times 2.0 g for 24 hours and 40 low infectious risk CS without antibiotic prophylaxis. We take in account the existing before the CS risk factors for postoperative infectious complications as: hours of PROM; length of labor, number of vaginal examinations before CS, previous sections, duration of the operation, anemia, bacteriuria and diabetes. For post CS infection-related complications we take: febrile morbidity, endometritis, wound infections, infection of urinary tract. The results show infection complication in the three groups as follow: 14.6% for tercef, 17.1% for cefazolin and 20.0% for the group without antibiotic. There is not statistically significant difference. According our study in cases of CS with increased risk of post-operative infectious complications the antibiotic prophylaxis reduce the rate of infection-related complications even below that of CS with low infectious risk. The single dose of 1 g tercef i.v. is effective and suitable in comparison with 24 hours regiment of cefazolin.

[Changes in the T-wave configuration in the ECG telemetry of cows].

Radiotelemetric and biochemical investigations were carried out with a total of 40 freshly calved cows, divided into two groups in dependence on the form of the T wave of ECG. It was found that the biphase T wave spoke of the individual capacity of the body; it was retained only during the first months of the lactation period, and later on changed into a negative T wave. The configuration of the T wave was not essentially affected by the blood serum levels of total protein, blood sugar, LDH, AcAT, AlAT, Ca, P, and Mg. In the study of the alkaline-acid state dependable differences were established with the gas exchange of oxygen as measured by the indices pO2, SAT, and O2CT which were shown to be higher in cows with a biphase T wave. The registration of a positive branch of the biphase T wave was associated with the enhancement of excitation of the right chamber and the registration of its vector. In normal conditions the latter was not demonstrated by the dominating biopotentials of the left chamber.

[ECG telemetry in cows].

By the method of ECG telemetry was investigated the cardiac, activity in 245 cows, from which 125--in the lactation period, 48--pregnant and 112--new-calved. It was established that the cardiac frequency in pregnant cows is 83.3 min-1, in new-calved--83.7 min-1 and in milch-cows--86.3 min-1. The elements of ECG are similar in value for the separated groups of cows, and are in the limits for the peak P by amplitude--from 0.22 to 0.24 mV and duration--from 0.080 to 0.083 s, for the peak R the amplitude is from 1.17 to 1.20 mV and the duration--from 0.063 to 0.065 s. The values of interval and segment P--Q, of segment S-T, interval Q--T and segment T--P are shown. Proved are changes in the shape and duration of the T wave, which occurs as diphasic in the pregnant and new-calved cows--up to 45% and in the milch-cows--9.6%.

[Effect of laser acupuncture and irradiation of the cervix uteri in cows on cardiac activity and morphological composition of the blood].

Tested is the action of helium-neon laser for acupuncture with capacity 7mV and diameter of the ray 2 mm in cows during the puerperal period. Laser acupuncture (LA) is applied on 6 cows by radiation of two main acupuncture points 49 and 50 for 2 min and additional--27, 28 and 29, radiated for 1 min each of them. Second group is locally radiated in area of the cervix of the uterus (LRCU) for 6 min. The radiation is done a day for 5 days. From the radiotelemetric research of the cardiac activity is established decreasing of the cardiac frequency and increasing of the interval R-R, the amplitude of peak--P and the duration of wave--T in both of the groups, and prolongation of the segments P-Q, S-T, T-P and the interval Q-P in cows with LRCU. There are not registered changes in the shape of the peaks of the EKG-telemetry, with the exception of the wave-T. Haematological research shows decreasing of the content of the haemoglobin in both of the groups and decreasing of the content of the erythrocytes in cows with LRCU, and increasing of C.U.E. after the second radiation. In the content of the blood sugar, the haematic values and the leukocyte formula are not observed mathematically reliable changes.

[Clinical, radiotelemetric and pathomorphological research on lambs experimentally infected with Cysticercus ovis].

Experiments were carried out with six 2-month-old lambs infected experimentally with 30,000 T. ovis ova each. It was found that with slightly infected lambs there were no deviations in the normal state of the animals and their ECG telemetry. Morphologically, there were sporadic cysticerci. With strong infections the disease was found to run its course with apparently manifested clinical signs: depressed general condition, lowered appetite, profuse salivation, lacrimation, pollakisuria, high temperature, and high pulse and heart rates. Electrocardiographically, essential changes were recorded in the elements characterizing myocardial infarction. Morphologically and histopathologically, beside cysticerci in the heart and skeletal muscles there were necrotic foci, hyalin-dystrophic and necrotic and lytic areas.

[Optimal sites for attaching ECG-telemetry electrodes on cows and calves].

Comparative ECG telemetry studies were carried out on the proper fixation of electrodes with a view to leading biopotentials from the heart with a total of 185 cows and calves. Conductions were made following the pattern of a standard ECG and the known points for telemetric investigations as suggested by various authors. As optimal sites for fixing the electrodes were shown to be the Ist precordial lead after Gabrashanski, the IInd one after Spörri, the IIIrd one (sagittal) after Roshtevskii, Horma and coll., and the sites suggested by us--apex cordis and the front angle of the left scapula. It was found that best information about the work done by the heart could be obtained by placing the electrodes along the axis line of the heart dipole polarity, and this corresponded to the negative electrode (a red one) of apex cordis--Vth and VIst interrib space at the height behind the elbow processus, and to the positive electrode (a yellow one) of the front angle of the right and the left spadebone. At such lead the basic ECG vector--QRS--was positive, and the peak P and the wave T were negative. The negative charge of the heart dipole was fed to the negative input of the amplifier for biopotentials, and the positive charge of the dipole is fed to the positive input.

[Clinical, radiotelemetric and x-ray research on erythematous polyarthritis in lambs].

Experimental investigations were carried out with 6 lambs each infected i/v with 2 cm3 of a 24-hour broth culture of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae rated at 10(8) microbial cells per cu. cm. The clinical state of the animals was followed up in the course of 60 days, the changes in the cardiovascular system and those in the movements of the rumen being recorded radiotelemetrically, while the changes taking place in the joints were studied roentgenographically. It was found that the causative agent of swine erysipelas was strongly pathogenic for the lambs following a hematogenic infection, causing polyarthritis with concurrent changes in the general state--rise of temperature and higher respiration and pulse rates. The electrocardiograms of the affected animals showed sinus tachycardia, participation of Q waves, and changes in the R and T waves, while the graphic records of the rumen showed a drop in the number of rumen contractions and decrease in the amplitude. Roentgenographically, there were periostitis and osteoarthritis of the carpal and tarsal joints.

[Changes in the ECG telemetry of lambs infected with Cysticercus ovis].

Six lambs were experimentally infected with Cysticercus ovis. Some changes were followed up in the ECG by means of the radiotelemetric method. The infection process led to the following more important changes, such as sinus tachicardia and arhythmia, auricular fibrilation, sinoauricular block, atrial dissociation, the incidence of a pathologic Q deflection; lowering of the R deflection amplitude, and inversion of the T wave. It was found that the changes referred to persist for a longer period (in the case of infarction), and could be made use of in dispensary studies.

[Electronic indicators for determining the optimum moment for inseminating cows and sheep].

Three types of electron indicators to measure the electric resistance of the vagina with cows and ewes are described. The first type of such indicators gives a direct scale record of resistance as measured in ohm units. The remaining two types present a simpler construction, and are intended for practical purposes, pointing to the threshold value of resistance. It has been found by means of these indicators that the optimal time for insemination in the case of cows is when the electric resistance is lower than 250 omega; for ewes--when the resistance is lower than 550 omega. The indicators rate totally designed with Bulgarian transistors and integral schemes.

[Surgical diseases in calves and the economic losses from them during intensive fattening].

Investigations were carried out in 1982 at three calf-fattening complexes of the same type of equated conditions of growing and feeding on a total of 15 600 bull calves to establish the percent of surgical diseases and the economic losses thereof. Highest proved the share of diseases involving the bone-joint apparatus of the limbs--fractures, epiphysiolyses, arthroses, arthritis (6 per cent), the hooves (1.8 per cent), the soft tissues of the limbs--wounds, ruptures, tendinitis and tendovaginitis, bursitis, pareses and paralyses (5.4 per cent). Considerable was the number of cases with the involvement of other organs too--genitalia, horns, tail, and others (2.1 per cent). The economic losses of the emergency slaughtered bull calves as well as of the those that died, along with the therapeutic means used amounted to LV 320 000 for a year.

[Rumen metabolism and nonspecific resistance of early-weaned lambs reared by different technics].

Studied was the effect of various technologies of industrial raising--battery-cell, and loose-box--as well as of stress factors on the functional shaping of rumen metabolism and the motor activity of the forestomach, and the unspecific resistance, growth, development, and morbidity rate of early weaned lambs from the 1st to the 75th day. It was found that early weaned (on the 3rd day of age) artificially raised and nourished with a milk replacer lambs exhibited a comparatively low natural resistance. Those of the lambs that were kept in battery cells gave losses amounting up to 5 animals (13.9 per cent) due to bronchopneumonia and white muscle disease. With the use of the group box technology of raising the death cases were 3 (8.3 per cent), 2 of which were due to tympanits. Loosely raised lambs with their ewes showed higher average daily gain (24.9 per cent) as against those raised after the group box system; it was also higher (25.9 per cent) than that of lambs raised in battery cells. With lambs raised in boxes the total locomotor activity of the forestomach proved higher (991 units) as compared to lambs kept in battery (670); it proved lower than that in lambs raised together with their ewes.
