Subchronic nose-only inhalation study of propylene glycol in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Groups of nineteen Sprague-Dawley rats of each sex were exposed by a nose-only inhalation to 0.0, 0.16, 1.0 or 2.2 mg propylene glycol/litre air, for 6 hr/day, 5 days/wk for 90 days. There were no significant differences in respiratory rates, minute volumes or tidal volumes between any of the groups during aerosol exposure. The uniformity of respiratory parameters between dose groups implied that the delivered doses were proportional to the exposure concentrations. The mean terminal body weights were not significantly different from controls for any group of male animals. The mean body weights of the females exposed to 2.2 mg/litre were significantly less than those of female controls from day 50 onwards. This effect, in female rats, was consistent with a decrease in feed consumption for the high-exposure female rats beginning on study day 43. Statistically significant differences between the treated and control groups in certain haematological parameters, serum enzyme activities, other serum chemistry parameters and organ weights did not show clear dose relationships. There was a significant increase in the number of goblet cells or an increase in the mucin content of the existing goblet cells in the nasal passages of the medium- and high-exposure animals. Exposure to the above concentrations of propylene glycol caused nasal haemorrhage and ocular discharge in a high proportion of animals, possibly as a result of dehydration of the nares and eyes.

[Histological characteristics of the intraorbital glands of pheasants with tuberculosis].

For the first time in the country are investigated histologically lacrimal and Harderian glands of pheasants, affected by tuberculosis, raised in pens. By histological analysis were reported the results of the cell reactivity in the affected by the tubercular process tissues and organs. Under the influence of the mycobacteria and their disintegration products the tissues react specifically. In pheasants, affected by tuberculosis are established destructive processes in the intraorbital glands. Mainly in the connective tissue of the glands are observed tubercular knots, which morphologically differ from these in the hen. In the interlobular tissue, in the interacinar and peritubular connective tissue exist strongly expressed infiltration with cells of the lymphoid series, phagocytes and heterophils, as a result of the affected-tissue reactivity, on account of the local and diffusional spreading of the tubercular bacillus in the glands.

[Clinico-experimental research on acute isoproturon poisoning in sheep].

The toxic action of the carbamide preparation isoproturon-50 was followed up after oral administration at a single dose rate of 3600 mg per kg body mass. Studied were also the clinical picture, body temperature, pulse rate and respiratory excursions, appetite, general behaviour and such biochemical indices as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, carotene, vitamin A, blood sugar, total protein, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase.

[Pathomorphological changes in experimental Erysipelothrix infection in lambs].

Investigations were carried out with eight lambs treated i/v with a broth culture of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae at the rate of 10(8) microbial cells per 1 cm3. Following infection the lambs developed polyarthritis. Studied were the morphologic changes in both dead and slaughtered lambs at various intervals after the infection was performed. It was found that from the 2nd up to the 7th day the lesions were characterized by moderate infiltration (neutrophil granulocytes) of the parenchymal organs as well as by dystrophic- and necrotic foci in the liver and hyperemia, edema, and hemorrhages in the spleen, lung, and brain. After the 7th day were found reticulohistiocytic proliferations in the liver and heart, and intracapillary glomerulonephritis, thromboendocarditis, and polyarthritis.

[Clinico-epizootiological and pathomorphological studies of "marble spleen" disease in pheasants].

Described are the clinical and epizootiological aspects and the morphological lesions in pheasants affected with the marble spleen disease at its first outbreaks. The disease was found to run a peracute course with a 100 per cent lethal effect. Mortality rate reached 5.6 per cent, the male birds being affected much more rarely than the female ones -- up to 1.8 per cent. The spleen is invariably enlarged two to four times, with marble appearance due to the numerous gray-whitish nodules. Histologically, there were necroses with the abundant deposition of achromatic amyloid. The reticular cells presented large numbers of intranuclear inclusion bodies, mainly of two types -- large eosinophilic ones, filling the whole nucleus, and smaller ones of basophilic reaction, surrounded by a pale halo and located in the center of the nucleus. In the lungs there were strongly manifested oedema and hyperemia, and more rarely -- necrotic foci with the deposition of amyloid. The liver and kidneys presented degenerative lesions of a varying intensity, and there were also intranuclear bodies in the reticulo-endothelial cells. Amyloid was also found in the glomerules.

[Toxic action and deratization effect of acute rodenticide].

Tested was the toxic action and the deratization effect of the new acutely acting rodenticide EL614 recently introduced into deratization practice. The experiments were carried out with laboratory rats and pigs as well as with the rats found in a swine breeding complex. Studied were the morphologic and histopathologic changes in the internal organs of rats that had swallowed baits carrying the preparation in various concentration. It was found that LD50 for rats up to the 24th hour after swallowing the poison was 4.13 mg/kg, and it was 1.78 mg/kg at the 48t hour, and 1.32 mg/kg at the 72nd hour. Intoxication and death set in as the result of impaired function of almost all organs, which was explained by the lipidotropic action of the preparation. Particularly severe were the lesions (hemodynamic and degenerative) in the brain. In field trials the baits contained EL614 in concentration of 0.005 per cent, showed a low deratization effect the first day after setting them. In this case the effect could be explained by the stress developing among the rodent population. The same baits in amounts surpassing 300-400 g caused intoxication and death in pigs of 20 kg live weight.
