[Genetic traits in the area of Bodrogköz].

In 1984 a late malaria endemic area, called Bodrogköz was studied. This was a reexamination of the population genetic work performed by Walter, Nemeskéri. In six villages of Bodrogköz 328 persons were tested for AB0, Rh blood groups, haptoglobins, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, erythrocyte amount, the MCV, the MCH and the G-6-PD were analyzed. The quantitative determination of HbF and HbA2, red cell osmotic resistance and thalassemia were measured as well. Thalassemia heterozygote carriers and an increased level of HbF were revealed. The frequency of G-6-PD deficiency was 0.39%. In Bodrogköz the frequencies of AB0, Rh and haptoglobin types were similar in the present and all previous studies. The background of this similarity might be the genetic similarity between two following generations. On the basis of these facts, the Hb0 Arab and partially DNA work we suggested an alternative hypothesis that these mutant genes got into Bodrogköz by the rather later migration than with ancient Hungarian people during the period of conquest of Hungary.

Unidentified multiple congenital abnormalities in twins. A population-based Hungarian study.

Of 1038 index patients with multiple congenital abnormalities, 34 were twins. This 3.3 per cent is higher than the Hungarian birth rate of about 2.1 per cent. However, after the exclusion of cases with congenital abnormality association of low birth weight newborn infants and with genital anomalies of the male, the twin birth rate was 1.8 per cent. Thus, the unidentified multiple congenital abnormalities have no common cause with twinning.

Testicular volume variations from 0 to 28 years of age.

To determine the standard testicular volume growth, 1985 males aged 0 to 28 years were subjected to measurement by means of Hynie's testometer and the results were related to the body size (testicular volume cm3/Livi index). Data for comparison were obtained from a gypsy and a non-gypsy sample. While at the ages of 0 to 9 years the volume did not show any notable variation, there was a conspicuous and rapid (approx. 10-fold) increase between 10 and 15 years. The maximum size was attained among the non-gypsies at 17-18, among the gypsies at 21-22 years. The average volume for every age group above 19-20 years was higher in the gypsy than in the non-gypsy sample. In each group, from the start of puberty the right testis was bigger on the average than the left.

Congenital postural deformity association.

The so-called congenital postural deformities were evaluated in the material of the Hungarian Congenital Malformation Registry, 1970-1976. Seven categories of postural deformities: dislocation of the hip, clubfoot, torticollis, musculoskeletal, other limb, face-nose and auricular were separated. The occurrence of the combination of dislocation of the hip, clubfoot and torticollis is manifold of random combination. These three postural deformities, however, are not associated more often with other nonpostural type abnormalities. Thus the congenital postural deformity association composed of two or more combinations of dislocation of the hip, clubfoot and torticollis without other major congenital abnormalities is treated as a provisional entity. Its birth prevalence is 0.4 per 1000 total births thus after Down syndrome it is the second common type of multiple congenital abnormalities. The aetiology and its higher sib-occurrence are explained by intrauterine maternal moulding factors.

The first five years of the Budapest twin register, 1970-1974.

The Budapest Twin Register recorded 88.6% of the 1739 multiple births that occurred between 1970 and 1974. Of these, 31.2% were male-female pairs. Based on the examination of the placenta (19.8% monochorial) and of genetic makrers, 406 pairs proved to be monozygotic and 645 dizygotic. Sex ratio of twins at birth showed a female preponderance (1000 F: 1009 M) in comparison to singletons (1000 F: 1071 M). Average birthweight of the twins was 2101 g. The frequency of stillbirths was about four times higher in twins than in singletons, twice as high in monozygotic than in dizygotic twins, and 2.4 times higher among second than first-born twins.

Nationwide investigation of multiple malformations.

A nationwide programme for the evaluation of 1,339 newborns with multiple malformations (about 8% of all malformed babies) notified to the Hungarian Congenital Malformation Registry in the period 1973 to 1975, was launched on January 1st, 1973. As specific syndromes and anomalads, 696 cases (51.9%) were notified. On the basis of individual malformations, 87 cases were identified from 439 patients with notified associations, and 27 multiple malformations among 172 stillborns and infant deaths were recognized from autopsy records collected from pathologists. 341 surviving infants were officially referred to 'multiple malformation centres' for special examination. 57 infants of 129 cooperating families were identified. Benefits of this programme are (i) the proportion of specific syndromes and anomalads increased by 12.8%; (ii) the rate of unspecified multiple malformations decreased by 56.6%; (iii) examination of multiple malformations may be the most sensitive means to detect teratogens; (iv) 50.5% of the expected number of chromosome abnormalities in newborns was found; (v) the nationwide material of multiple malformed babies offers a possibility to clarify gene abnormalities and new syndromes.
