[Primary choriocarcinoma of the ovary--a case report].

A report is given on a rare case of nongestational primary chorionepithelioma of the ovary. A 30 years old woman was treated by salpingo-oophorectomy and methotrexate-monotherapy. She is showing long-term remission.

[Retrospective diagnosis of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome].

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome was retrospectively diagnosed by postmortem examination and family history in a male infant who had lived to the age of six months. Pathologico-anatomic findings included strongly pronounced uric acid nephropathy with tophaceous deposits and urate calculi in the renal pelvis as well as pedatrophia and anaemia.

[The morphology of coxsackie B virus infections of the nervous system].

Neuropathological studies were conducted into 20 virologically secured Coxsackie-B virus infections of infants and adults, with the nervous system being involved. Inflammatory processes affect both gray and white cerebral regions as well as the peripheral nervous system, and in adulthood they may take the form of severe necrotising encephalitis. Necroses of that kind may be recordable from various regions of the central nervous system. Notwithstanding tempestuous progress in the development of monoclonal antibody kits, culturing of Coxsackie viruses will continue to be of substantive importance to diagnosis, because of the small size of pathogens.

Immunolocalization of dipeptidyl aminopeptidase (DAP IV) in the developing human brain.

By means of immunohistochemical techniques we have investigated the presence of dipeptidyl aminopeptidase IV immunoreactivity in brain material derived from human fetuses, newborns and aged persons. It was revealed that the enzyme protein is abundantly present in the immature human CNS. On the contrary the adult human brain contains much less dipeptidyl aminopeptidase immunoreactivity. It is speculated that the enzyme might play an important role in neuronal proliferation and/or differentiation especially with regard to its possible action on certain neuronotrophic peptides (IGF II, growth hormone).

Immunohistochemical detection of cathepsin D in human neuroontogenesis.

An antiserum against rat liver cathepsin D, which was previously found to cross-react with human brain cathepsin(s) D, was used to immunolocalize the enzyme in developing CNS man. Cathepsin D protein was found in neurons as well as in glial cells. The aerliest occurrence of cathepsin D was observed in neuroblasts at the 12th gestational week. During pre-, peri-, and postnatal neuroontogenesis, there is a strong increase in the amount of immunoreactive material.

[Detection of circulating immune complexes in patients with EPH gestosis or intrauterine fetal growth retardation].

Sera from 19 patients with EPH gestosis, 22 patients with hypotrophic newborns, and a control group of ten women with normal pregnancy and fetuses were studied for the presence of circulating immune complexes. Both the C1q solid-phase radioimmunoassay and the polyethylene glycol precipitation test revealed significantly higher levels of circulating immune complexes in both groups of patients.

Proctolin immunoreactive neurons in the human brain stem.

Using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique it could be established that a variety of nerve cells of human Pons and Medulla oblongata contain proctolin-like material. These neurons belong to the Nuc. olivaris caudalis, Nuc. originis n. hypoglossi, Nuc. raphes dorsalis and the Nuc. ambiguus. Furthermore, proctolin immunoreactive peptide was found to be contained in certain fiber systems (Lemniscus medialis and fiber tracts near the Raphe).

[Animal experiment studies of the modification of pregnancy by heterologous antibodies to placental antigens].

Pregnancy impairment in mice with abortion and fetal resorption was caused by rabbit antibodies to total mitochondrial, mitochondrial membrane and microsomal fractions of mouse placentas injected intraperitoneally at 12-14 days of gestation. Antibodies to cytosol and soluble mitochondrial constituents were ineffective. According to the marker distribution in the biologically active and inactive fractions membrane-bound antigens are thought to be responsible for the abortigenic effect.

Localization of cholecystokinin immunoreactivity in the human brain with special reference to ontogeny.

The cellular localization and regional distribution of peptides of the gastrin/cholecystokinin family was investigated in human fetal, neonatal and adult brains by use of immunohistochemical techniques. It could be revealed that a cholecystokinin-like immunoreactivity is already present in human brain at the 11/12th gestational weeks. With the 19th week a strong increase in number of CCK reactive cells and the reaction intensity is obvious. The data are compared with the distribution pattern of the adult brain. Our data permit to conclude that gastrin/CCK-related material might play roles independent of neurotransmitter functions during early human brain development.

[Prenatal diagnoses in a family with pericentric inversion of chromosome no. 5].

A hereditary pericentric inversion of chromosome 5(p13 leads to q35) was detected in a family after the birth of a child with Cri-du-Chat-syndrome [46,XY,del(5)(p13)]. Prenatal diagnoses were carried out in three pregnancies in this family. The following results were found in the amniotic fluid cells: first pregnancy 46,XX; second 46,XY, inv(5)(p13 leads to q35) and the third 46,XX,der (5)(pter leads to q35::p13 leads to pter). The first two pregnancies ended with the birth of phenotypically normal children; the third one however was interrupted. Fetal kidney tissue cultures confirmed the result of the amniotic fluid cell culture.

[The pathogenesis of hematoxylin bodies--observations on an experimental model in animals (author's transl)].

Paraquat induced lung damage in guinea pigs was used as experimental model producing respiratory distress syndrom. Lung specimens investigated in early stages after this injury showed hyaline membranes combined with hematoxylin bodies. The latter result from epithelial necrosis and local deficit of lysosomal enzymes with reduced cell degradation. Hematoxylin bodies consist of nuclear debris forming spherical bodies by their high surface tension. Their structure is the same as in human newborns where sometimes basophilic bodies are to be recognized in the beginning of pulmonary hyaline membranes.

[Intrauterine gas gangrene in the 37th week of pregnancy].

A report is given on an infection of intrauterine gas gangrene of stage 2 according to Dieminger (Tumpania uteri) in the 37th week of pregnancy which turned out well. The clinical progress of gas gangrene is discussed. The abstention from a caesarian section by reason of indication of the child with suspicion of a severe intrauterine infection, the vaginal delivery which was forced subsequently, the prevailingly prophylactic administration of antibiotics, and the largely initiated infusion and transfusion therapy have in a high degree determined the positive end of the disease. The intensive observation of the woman in labor, who at first had only been clinically conspicuous, led to an early recognition of toxic symptoms, so that an aimed intensive therapy could be carried out.
