Initial experience of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a district hospital.

Fifty-five consecutive unselected patients were submitted for laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and the procedure completed laparoscopically in fifty cases. The outcome is presented with particular reference to the duration of surgery, postoperative pain and nausea, the length of hospital stay and the time taken to recover normal activities. This technique is shown to have major advantages over conventional gallbladder surgery for the majority of patients.

A pseudoisochromosome 18q and an isodicentric chromosome 18.

A case of pseudoisochromosome 18q of prezygotic origin and a case of isodicentric chromosome 18 of postzygotic origin are presented to validate the differentiation between a true isochromosome and a pseudoisochromosome. This differentiation may be useful in elucidating the mechanism of the origin of an isochromosome.

Ameloblastic sarcoma of the mandible: report of case.

A case of ameloblastic sarcoma of the mandible in a 19-year-old man is presented. Pain, paresthesia, and rapidity of growth were features of the lesion. Successful excision was followed by death from secondary hemorrhage.

Sendai virus multiplication in the presence of ceruloplasmin and homologous virus envelopes.

Preincubation of Sendai virus with ceruloplasmin induced in chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) fragments the synthesis of a population with decreased infectivity and high haemagglutinating (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) activities, whereas preincubation with solubilized virus envelopes led to the production of a viral population with the same infectivity as the control, but with lower HA and NA activities. Preincubation of the virus with a mixture of ceruloplasmin and solubilized envelopes depressed the overall virus synthesis; the resulting population had a low infectivity and high HA and NA activities. The variation in the HA/NA ratio indicates a modification in the envelope structure.

Giant-cell tumor of the maxilla. Report of a case.

Giant-cell tumor of the jaw presents difficulty in diagnosis. It is rare in the head and neck regions and may resemble, clinically and histologically, other types of jaw lesion. However, histologic study may distinguish this lesion from a giant-cell granuloma, an osteogenic sarcoma, and most epulides. Adequate surgical excision with a long-term follow-up is the recommended treatment of choice.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Three cases of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma have been described along with the histopathological findings, treatment and a brief review of the literature on the subject. It is of interest that one of these cases, histologically proven, was a female and this in spite of some rigidly held views about the strict sex linkage of the lesion. The tumour is uncommon but it is possible that unfamiliarity with the histopathology, as well as the likelihood of cessation of activity at any stage, may in part be responsible for its low recorded prevalence. The progress of each patient after four, two and one year respectively gives cause for some optimism, but the long-term prognosis must remain guarded.

Influence of the isolation procedure on the structure, neuraminidase and heamagglutinating activities of Sendai virus envelope glycoproteins.

The influence of the isolation procedure of Sendai virus glycoproteins from the virus surface on their neuraminidase and haemagglutinating activities, as well as on some structural properties was studied. These glycoproteins exhibited lower specific neuraminidase and haemagglutinating activities than those of intact virus. Neuraminidase activity was expressed when the glycoproteins were constituted in forms with molecular weights of about 70,000 (monomer), 160,000 (dimer), 300,000 (tetramer) or 600,000 (octamer), whereas haemagglutinating activity was only found for the glycoproteins aggregated in a high mol. wt. (approximately 10(6) daltons) form. The isolated glycoproteins contained two subunits revealed by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and three distinct antigenic components revealed by rocket immunoelectrophoresis. Different treatments of the glycoproteins after their isolation altered their structure. Consequently either neuraminidase and haemagglutinating activities were signicantly reduced, or one of these activities was not expressed.

Epidermoid carcinoma of the bulbar conjuctiva in Ethiopia.

We report 26 patients with epidermoid carcinoma of the bulbar conjunctiva seen in Ethiopia, in a 29-month period. The increased frequency and aggressiveness of this neoplasm is emphasized and related to increased amount and scattering of ultraviolet radiation in the tropics.

Specific cleavage of Sendai virus nucleocapsid protein subunits during virus storage.

The alteration of whole Sendai virus and especially of its nucleocapsid polypeptides, during storage of the virus at 4 degree C in the allantoic fluids in which it was cultivated, has cultivated, has been studied by sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis. During virus storage the nucleocapsid protein subunits with a molecular weight of 60,000 and the putative inner envelope protein with a molecular weight of 38,000 were mainly affected. Both virus components were partially degraded to smaller components. Examination of nucleocapsids isolated from "stored" virus showed that, in addition to the 60,000-molecular weight polypetide component, a smaller polypeptide component with a molecular weight of 46,000 appeared. The relative proportion of the small component increased with the storage period: a kind of specific conversion of large to small components occurred during storage. Since viruses kept in the absence of allantoic fluids revealed no similar modifications of their polypeptides, we concluded that a cellular component present in the allantoic fluids - very likely of enzymatic nature - is responsible for the observed cleavage of virus polypeptides.

Effect of ceruloplasmin on AoPR8 influenza virus infection in embryonate eggs and mice.

Inoculation to embryonate hen eggs and mice of AoPR8 influenza virus pre-incubated with ceruloplasmin (10(-7)-10(-6) M) results in a statistically significant decrease in the hemagglutinating titer of the virus, without changes in infectivity. This effect is ascribed to formation of a virus-ceruloplasmin complex, which probably interferes with both virus penetration and release of newly formed virus from the cell.

Effect of ceruloplasmin on Sendai virus multiplication in chorioallantoic membrane fragments.

Three stages can be distinguished in the evolution of HA titer during Sendai virus multiplication in chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) fragments in relation to the age of CAM and conditions of inoculation and maintenance. Ceruloplasmin has an inhibitory effect on virus multiplication, more marked in the case of stationarily maintained CAM fragments and dependent on the relationship between the moment of ceruloplasmin addition and of virus inoculation. Maximum inhibition is achieved by inoculation of Sendai virus (1 Ha u) after 4 1/2-hour preincubation with ceruloplasmin (5 x 10(-7)M). The experimental data plead for the formation of a virus-ceruloplasmin complex able to inhibit both penetration and release of virus synthesized in the cell.
