Comparative assessment of fenoprofen and paracetamol given in combination for pain after surgery.

In a double-blind study of patients suffering from pain after surgery, fenoprofen 200 mg and paracetamol 500 mg was compared with each drug given separately and with a placebo. There was a significant difference between the combination and the placebo, whereas, separately, the drugs were only marginally better than the placebo in relieving pain. There was a significant linear trend indicating a better clinical result as the number of active components in the regimen was increased.

Naloxone: dose-dependent antagonism of respiratory depression by fentanyl in anaesthetized patients.

Naloxone was used to antagonize the respiratory depression caused by the administration of fentanyl 0.05 mg to patients anaesthetized with 0.5% halothane in 70% nitrous oxide in oxygen. Four groups of at least 10 patients each were studied. Doses of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mg of naloxone were given, and an effect proportional to the logarithm of the dose was demonstrated.

Double-blind clinical trial of anaesthetic premedication for use in major day surgery.

Three anaesthetic premedication regimens have been compared by double-blind controlled trial in 158 patients undergoing day-case surgery for varicose veins or hernia. Atropine plus droperidol was superior to atropine plus diazepam or atropine alone in lessening nausea and vomiting and in reducing the need for postoperative analgesia.

Oral premedication with oxypertine.

The preoperative effects of oral oxypertine have been compared with those of papaveretum and atropine in 185 patients in a double-blind between-patient study. Oxypertine 20 mg given orally as a nocturnal sedative and again on the morning of operation produced relief of anxiety comparable to that of papaveretum 10 mg and atropine 0.6 mg. It is concluded that oxypertine may be of value in medication before anaesthesia.
