[Studies of immunomodulation caused by selenium-enriched phycocyanin].

An influense was studied in rats of selenium enriched phycocyanin (Se-PC) from food microalgae Spirulina on anaphylactic reaction severity and circulating antibody response against model allergen--hen's egg white ovalbumin. Se-PC was introduced into diet in form of protein isolate precipitated with ammonia sulphate. Se-PC dosage made up to 450 mcg per rat daily that corresponded to 5 mcg of selenium. There were no differences revealed between experimental and control group that received standard diet in severity of anaphylactic reaction. Nevertheless rats receiving Se-PC demonstrated significantly increased specific IgG response. The probable immunomodulating properties of Se-PC included into food are discussed.

[Studies of bioavailability of different food sources of selenium in experiment].

The selenium bioavailability in selenium enriched Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis), phycocyanin containing (Se-PC) protein isolate, separated from this micro algae and in sodium selenite was studied and compared in rats. The daily dose of selenium per one animal was 5 microgram in all experimental groups. The average selenium levels in blood serum and liver of animals that received sodium selenite during 14 days were the highest. The average selenium level in blood serum of animals fed with selenium enriched Spirulina platensis after 14 days of receiving was the same with the control group, but the average concentration of selenium in their liver was rather high and close to this parameter of sodium selenite animal group. The animals which were fed with Se-PC showed better results. Their average selenium level in blood serum was higher than in Spirulina group, but lower than in sodium selenite group. The average concentration of selenium in the liver of these animals was the same with sodium selenite animal group. As regards to animals that were fed with selenium enriched Spirulina, Se-PC and sodium selenite for 21 days, the average selenium levels ratio in their blood serum and liver was higher than in control group, but these results were not significantly different among each other. The concentrations of selenium in seminal glands in all groups of animals including control group both after 14 and 21 days feeding were close to each other.

[Mineral substance in human nutrition. Selenium: absorption and bioavailability].

In the review there are discussed results of selenium absorption studies in human and animals gastrointestinal tract. According to plenty of experimental data selenate-anion is rapidly and quantitatively absorbed upstream concentration gradient the site of absorption being predominantly ileum. This process is Na+ and energy dependent. On the contrary seleniteanion is absorbed mostly in jejunum, the rate of uptake is less than for selenate in model systems and absorption does not occur toward concentration gradient. Under physiological conditions the most part of selenite is transported as mixed thiols with glutathione and some other tissue thiol compounds. Selenium amino acids are transported by corresponding transfer systems with specificity for analogous sulfur containing amino acids. Whereas bioavailability of transition al metals salts rarely exceeds 10-20%, selenium food sources (both organic and inorganic origin) are typically high absorbable predominantly on 60% or more and in some cases almost on 100%. From this point of view selenium food sources bioavailability evaluation must take into account their metabolic retention and toxicity indicies rather than absorption ratio (such is for zinc, chromium and other metal ions).

[Microalgae Spirulina in human nutrition].

Spirulina microalgae (Spirulina platensis, Spirulina maxima, Spirulina fusiformis) is considered as a valuable additional food source of some macro- and micronutrients including high quality protein, iron, gamma-linolenic fatty acid, carotenoids, vitamins B1 and B2. In spite of Spirulina chemical composition varies widely when grown in open reservoirs its efficiency as an additional remedy in treatment and prophylaxis of different diseases is proved in a variety of experimental and clinical trials. During Spirulina cultivation in open reservoirs and especially in closed photobioreactors its biomass may be additionally enriched with some trace elements such as iron, iodine, selenium, zinc, copper, manganese and chromium in high bioavailable form. Said biomass is considered as a constituent of new bioactive food supplements.

[Essential trace elements distribution in food micro algae Spirulina platensis biomass fractions].

Distribution of some trace elements elements (zinc, selenium, iron, manganese, chromium) was characterized in enriched biomass of food micro algae Spirulina platensis by means of water-methanol fractionation. The majority of said trace elements was shown to be incorporated in intercellular hydrophylic fraction, e.g. could be connected to cellular proteins. This result enable the conclusion, that Spirulina is a suitable matrix for biotechnological incorporation of new food trace elements preparations.

[Correction of selenium deficiency in patients with pneumonia].

The estimation of selenium (Se) safety in patients with pneumonia is important for evaluation of antioxidant defense system capacity and the immune status of the patients. The research has been carried out on the serum Se levels in patients with pneumonia at standard treatment and at treatment with the usage of selenium enriched food supplement (Se-spirulina). The results of research have shown that application of additional selenium in amount providing physiological requirement leads to full varnishing its deficiency cases and to restoration in the majority of patients the suboptimum Se level.

[Effect of a zinc-enriched diet on the clinical and metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetic patients].

It was investigated the influence of a diet with zinc supplementation on dynamic of glycaemia, lipid profile, blood pressure and weight in type 2 diabetic patients. Traditional hypocaloric diet was supplemented with zinc-spirulina (7.5 mg zinc per day). The results investigations indicated that a zinc-enriched diet has beneficial effects on basal and postprandial glycaemia, the content of cholesterol and triglycerides in serum in compared with a traditional hypocaloric diet.

[Selenium safety in children with protracted diarrhea syndrome].

The insufficient selenium safety was revealed in 27% of the children without signs of intestinal absorption damage surveyed in Novokuznetsk. Patients with coeliac disease differ doubtfully on a parameter of selenium safety from patients of control group whereas serum selenium level rises while keeping gluten free diet. Selenium insufficiency was observed approximately in 2/3 of children with allergic enteropathia and intestinal absorption damage of obscure origin. It is supposed, that the basic reason of selenium insufficiency in children with protracted diarrhea is a violation of intestinal protein absorption. The assumption failed that exception of grain products from diet in coeliac disease leads to selenium insufficiency. Children suffering from protracted diarrhea may need in correction of their selenium status.

[Effect of mold fungus spore consumption with food on systemic anaphylaxis in rats].

An influence was studied in experiment of intragastrically administrated milk cream contaminated with mould fungi spores on systemic anaphylactic reaction gravity in Wistar albino rats sensitized with egg albumin (EA). During 28 days sensitized rats intragastrically received cream containing 10(3) or 10(6) colony forming units of 5 fungal species in one cm3. After being challenged rats developed mild anaphylactic shock followed by elevation of small intestinal permeability for macromolecular tracer polyethylene glycol 4000. An increase of small intestinal permeability was also noticed in unsensitized rats that were fed with cream contaminated with 10(6) spores per cm3. Unexpectedly these effects were not additive: the intestinal permeability in sensitized rats decreased at maximal level of contamination. This may be explained by strengthening of gastrointestinal motility in these animals. Significant elevation of antibody production against EA was revealed in sensitized rats that received cream contaminated by spores at high level. The data obtained signify that milk products fungal contamination that could not be revealed by sense may nevertheless have negative impact on intestinal barrier function and sensitization.

[Effect of food diet supplements with chromium on the clinical and metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetic patients].

It was investigated the influence of food diet supplements with chromium on dynamic of glycaemia, lipid profile, blood pressure and weight in type 2 diabetic patients. Traditional hypocaloric diet was supplemented with chromium-spirulina (50 mcg chromium per day). The results investigations indicated that a chromium-enriched diet has beneficial effects on basal and postprandial glycaemia, the content of cholesterol and triglycerides in serum in compared with a traditional hypocaloric diet.

[Clinical and prognostic value of lesions in the gastrointestinal tract in systemic vascular purpura].

AIM: To evaluate clinical peculiarities and prognostic value of abdominal syndrome in adult patients with systemic vascular purpura (SVP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Incidence, clinical picture, complications of abdominal syndrome, its relations with principal extraintestinal manifestations of SVP were studied in 125 SVP patients. Absorption and barrier functions of the small intestine, their correlations with clinical activity of the disease were investigated in 32 SVP patients with no clinical signs of intestinal affection. Computer-assisted morphometry of duodenal mucosa biopsies was conducted and the results were compared to those of intestinal permiability and clinical activity of SVP. RESULTS: Negative correlation was found between the occurrence of abdominal syndrome and the patients' age. The gastrointestinal tract suffered more frequently in men. 21% patients had abdominal complications, association of abdominal syndrome with higher frequency of glomerulonephritis. In the absence of abdominal symptoms, the barrier function of the small intestine for protein macromolecules was impaired. This correlated with exacerbations of skin purpura. Increased intestinal permeability and activity of skin purpura correlated with severity of inflammation in the duodenal mucosa. CONCLUSION: Abdominal syndrome in SVP is an unfavourable prognostic factor indicating possible severe complications and high risk of glomerulonephritis. Subclinical intestinal involvement presenting as barrier dysfunction may contribute to aggravation of skin vasculitis.

[Selenium sufficiency in patients with malabsorption syndrome and its optimization with selenium enriched food supplements].

Selenium security was measured in 15 adult patients suffering from malabsorption syndrome, resulted from stomach and small intestine surgical resection consequences. In 7 of them (47%) marked deficiency of this essential trace element was revealed and in other 6 (40%)--suboptimal security. The indices of selenium security in observed patients markedly and significantly (p < 0.003) increased after a 3-week course of dietetic treatment including uptake of organic selenium enriched food supplement in amount equal to 90 mcg Se per day. This dietetic treatment had mild "physiologic" character that became apparent from the observation that the largest serum selenium increase was noticed in patients with largest degree of selenium insufficiency. It's concluded that there is certain testimony for selenium security correction in malabsorption patients by means of selenium enriched food supplement.

[Use of organic forms of selenium in nutrition of patients with gastrointestinal diseases].

Selenium level was determined in sera of 27 patients including 15 patients with chronic gastrointestinal diseases and 12 patients with intestinal malabsorption after some kinds of stomach or small intestine resection. Deficiency of this trace element was found in 5 patients and suboptimal concentration in 4 patients in the first group and in 3 and 5 patients of second group respectively. Supplementation of patients with 45 mg of selenium organic form based on autolysis extract of selenious baker's yeast resulted in increase of selenium level in 23 (85%) patients including all of them with selenium deficiency or suboptimal level. It was concluded about high bioavailability of selenium in supplement studied. Perturbed intestinal absorption after surgical resection of stomach or small intestine may be considered as an indication for prophylactic taking of organic selenium form preparation.

[Use of the microalgae Spirulina platensis and its selenium-containing form in nutrition of patients with nonspecific ulcerative colitis].

The vitamin security and selenium status were measured in the patients with unspecific ulcerative colitis. There were used food microalgae Spirulina platensis and it's preparation enriched with selenium as auxiliary tools of dietetic treatment for these patients. It's shown that there is a combined deficiency of beta-carotene and selenium and occasionally some other micronutrients in a significant part of the patients. The doses used of said food supplements were not enough sufficient for a dietary correction of deficiency of micronutrients with antioxidative properties.
