[Dandy-Walker syndrome].

Two cases of this syndrome occurring in children aged 1.5 and 3 years are reported. In one case, no other abnormalities were present, and the deformity did not manifest itself clinically before the child had fallen from a height. In the other, a cyst of the fourth ventricle coexisted with other abnormalities in the brain which were responsible for neurologic symptoms from the very birth and also, probably, for the atresia of draining orifices.

[The complex x-ray examination of patients with myeloceles of the lumbosacral spine].

The authors analysed the results of complex radiologic examination of 46 patients who underwent operation for meningomyelocele (survey spondylograms and tomograms, pneumoencephalography and myelography with omnipac). Double positive-negative contrast study of the subarachnoid space on the level of the meningomyelocele as well as the hernial sac allows authentic judgement on the degree of disorders in the spine, hernial sac, and the c.s.f. system.

[Lipid peroxidation intensity in the liver in protein-energy deficiency].

A fall in the glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase activity and selenium concentration was recorded in the liver of rats given diets poor in protein. The hepatic antioxidizing activity was lowered, lipid peroxidation (LPO) was intensified which was expressed in the growth of the amount of conjugated dienes, diene ketones and malonic dialdehydes. Diets poor in protein supplemented with sodium selenite and alpha-tocopherol acetate induced a significant increase in the selenium concentration and intensified the hepatic glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activity. The rise in the oxide reductase activity was attended by a decreased rate of accumulation of LPO products, their amount being significantly lower as compared to that in the animals who were not given antioxidants.

[The surgical procedure in spinal cord hernias of large size combined with hydrocephalus].

The paper analyzes the examination and treatment of 77 patients with myelomeningoceles. It is shown that the prognosis of treatment depends on the size and content of the hernial sac, the specific features of deformities of the liquor-containing system and the severity of liquor circulatory disorders. Both specific features of myelodysplasia manifestations and those of liquor circulatory disorders should be borne in mind in choosing the optimum surgical policy for myelomeningoceles. The optimum surgical approach to treating large-sized myelomeningoceles concurrent with hydrocephalus is demonstrated to one-stage plastic surgery of the hernial hilus and drainage of the subarachnoidal space of the terminal cistern into the abdomen.

[General approach to designing a device for artificial blood circulation].

The systems approach to constructing extracorporeal circulation equipment enhances the university of this equipment by interchangeable choice of its structure, functional parameters and constructive implementation. The authors propose to use in the extracorporeal circulation equipment two (two- and four-pump) perfusion units with two types of constructively interchangeable perfusion pumps of various capacity.

[The complex preoperative examination of children with a meningocele of the lumbosacral region].

The article presents results of complex examinations of 50 children with meningocele of lumbosacral localization. All these patients were operated upon. The operation was preceded by clinical, electroencephalographic and X-ray examinations. Special attention was given to the degree of injuries of the caudal portions of the spinal cord and ist roots, to findings of spondylography, myelography with roentgen-negative and roentgen-positive contrast substances, pneumoencephalography and EEG.
