Role of touch imprint and core biopsy for detection of tumor metastases in bone marrow.
A total number of 248 bone marrow trephine biopsies were reviewed and 21 paired biopsy and touch imprints were identified to estimate the role of these two diagnostic methods for detection of tumor metastases from nonhematologic malignancies in the bone marrow. The study period ran between January 1, 1993, and June 1, 1996. Eight histology sections and eight touch imprints were prepared from every case and were reviewed by two pathologists independently. In 20 cases, tumor cells were present without a doubt both on cytologic and histologic preparations. In one touch imprint, single cells were suspicious for malignancy, and the final pathology report was prepared after examination of the histologic sections. There was no positive biopsy in which the imprint was negative for tumor cells, and no positive touch imprint in which the biopsy was negative for such cells. The results from our study show that every one of these approaches has advantages and disadvantages and that they have a complementary role for identification of solid malignancies in the bone marrow.
A new variant chromosomal translocation t(2;2)(p23;q23) in CD30+/Ki-1+ anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
A case with a complex chromosome abnormality with a t(2;2)(p23;q23) in CD30+/Ki-1+ anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is described. This chromosome aberration has not been reported previously in neoplastic diseases and was associated with T-cell phenotype and involvement of the nasopharynx by the tumour.

[Immunohistochemical evidence of vimentin in fibrocystic breast disease and mammary carcinoma].
Immunohistochemical investigations were conducted of cryostat sections taken from 25 cases of fibrocystic breast disease and 100 cases of mammary carcinoma (among them 15 cases with lymph node metastases) to obtain information on expression of vimentin. Immunoreactive epithelial cells were recordable from 12 cases of fibrocystic disease (48%) and 32 tumors (32%). In the majority of all cases with vimentin-expressing carcinoma, positive staining was exhibited by less than 10% of the neoplastic cells. No correlation was found to exist between histological tumor grade, lymph node status and vimentin expression.
[Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the thyroid gland. Morphologic and immunohistochemical findings in 2 cases].
Described in this paper are two cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) of the thyroid gland in women with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. NHL may be misinterpreted for its histological similarity to anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. The immunoperoxidase technique can be used with good success to confirm the lymphocytic origin of tumor cells.
Structural and histochemical features of cortical thymic epithelial cells in mice with chemically-induced lymphoid leukemia.
Ultrastructural, enzyme histochemical (acide phosphatase, adenosine triphosphatase, neutral 5'-nucleotidase) and immunohistochemical (cytokeratins with monoclonal antibodies BH11 and BC3) features of the thymus cortical epithelial cells of leukemic DBA/2 inbred mice have been studied. In the leukemic mice epithelial cells appeared possessing some ultrastructural and histochemical features of cell activation. Lympho-epithelial complexes, composed mainly of BH11 and BC3 immunoreactive cells and of lymphoid cells were subcapsulary and subseptally found. It is discussed on the eventual involvement of the lympho-epithelial complexes in the intrathymic leukemogenesis during lymphoid leukemia.
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of abdominal and retroperitoneal tumors in infants and children.
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy has been employed to establish morphologic diagnoses in abdominal and retroperitoneal tumors in 54 infants and children. A 0.4-0.7-mm gauge needle was used; the puncture was performed through the anterior abdominal wall in the abdominal tumors and by the lateral approach in the retroperitoneal tumors. Malignant tumors were discovered in 51 cases (94.4%). The nature of the lesion was recognized in 96.2%, and correct cell typing was achieved in 90.2%. The most frequent lesion was non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma, followed by neuroblastoma, nephroblastoma, and individual cases of other epithelial and mesenchymal tumors. Using parallel bone marrow examination, half of the neuroblastoma cases and five of 28 lymphoma cases showed bone marrow involvement. We observed no complications caused by the fine-needle aspiration technique. Due to the safety and efficacy of this technique, it can often be used instead of explorative laparatomy.
[Ultrastructural studies of metastases of anaplastic tumors and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma as a contribution to differential diagnosis].
Difficulties in morphologic classification frequently arise in distinguishing between non-Hodgkin lymphoma and lymph node metastases from anaplastic tumors, mainly germ cell tumors and small cell carcinomas. The present study explores the role of ultrastructural features as a supplement to light microscopy in 14 cases of metastatic disease and 6 non-Hodgkin lymphomas. It appeared that the ultrastructure of the nucleoli, the arrangement of the nuclear bodies and the shape of nuclear invaginations are ultrastructural cell characteristics, which may contribute to the definitive diagnosis.

[Gonadotropin secretion in patients with testicular feminization].
FSH and LH were functionally examined in 5 women with feminizing testis and compared with the peripheral sex steroid hormones. The oestradiol levels were found decreased, while those of testosteron were elevated. FSH disclosed no significant differences while the basal levels of LH and its stimulatory response to LH-RH were increased in the patients.

Morphometric study on the nucleoli of mesothelial and tumour cells being in pleural cavity effusions.
An Opton cytophotometer was used for a comparative morphometric study on mesothelial and tumour cells obtained from pleural effusions. Tumour cells coming from malignant neoplasms with epithelial or mesenchymal origin were measured. Slides stained after Ambs X Grönemeyer and Smetana methods revealing RNP structures have been used. Both methods were valuable for nucleolar morphometry but the technical simplicity of the second one made it preferable. Nuclear and nucleolar surfaces as well as diameters and perimeters of nucleoli have been studied. Nucleolar/nuclear index, i.e. average number of the nucleoli per nuclear profile as well as nuclear/nucleolar surfaces ratio have been counted too. A clear difference of the average nucleolar size in tumour cells compared to that of mesothelial ones was established. The count of nuclear/nucleolar surfaces ratio-reveals that nucleolar enlargement in tumour cells is higher than nuclear one. In constant changes in the nucleolar/nuclear index was revealed in tumour cells.

The fine structure of the lymphocyte nucleus under conditions of phytohaemagglutinin stimulation.
The nucleus of PHA (phytohaemagglutinin) cultured lymphocytes is studied by EDTA, Thalium-Schiff and uranyl-lead techniques. Scattering of the dense chromatin, increase in the number of NB (nuclear bodies) and nucleolar modifications are established. Transportation is seen of granules similar to perichromatin ones from the nucleus into the cytoplasm. Morphometric investigation reveals a decrease between 7,7 and 26,3% of the dense chromatin and also that the number of PCG (perichromatin granules) to be the greatest in the untransformed PHA lymphocytes, e.g. B lymphocytes. It is established in new born chickens that the lymphocytes of the bourse of Fabricius are richer in PCG than these of the thymus.
