A case presentation involving the combined orthodontic-periodontic treatment of a distally inclined mandibular left central incisor with a mesial infrabony defect is reported. Treatment was performed in three phases: (a) the tooth was moved upright (b) periodontal surgery with osseous grafting of the infrabony defect was then performed; and (c) the operative site was reentered 5 months later. The patient was followed and soft and hard tissue changes were documented for 12 months from time of initiation of treatment.

Oral mucosal mitochondria were isolated and characterized morphologically by electron microscopy. Polarographic measurements were made of respiration and oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondrial preparations. ADP:O ratios approaching or slightly exceeding the theoretical maxima and stabilized respiratory control ratios were achieved with malate + glutamate, succinate and ascorbate-N,N,N1N1 tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD) as substrates. Inhibition by rotenone, antimycin A, azide, and cyanide established the classical electron transport chain as the major pathway of mitochondrial respiration. Respiration of the oral mucosal mitochondria was stimulated by DNP in the presence of succinate. DNP-stimulated respiration exceeded that observed in the presence of ADP plus Pi and increasing the concentration of DNP progressively inhibited respiration.

Patients on long-term hemodialysis therapy may develop secondary hyperparathyroidism with oral symptoms. As the life expectancy of the dialysis patient increases, the dentist is seeing these manifestations with increasing frequency. A review of the subject is presented along with a case illustrating dramatic roentgenographic changes in a patient who was placed on hemodialysis when the technique was in its infancy.

Sensitivity tests were administered to determine the effectiveness of several antibiotics in the management of the oral abscess. Cultures were taken from 13 patients who were diagnosed as having either a periodontal or periapical abscess. Results revealed the following 1. The most effective antibiotic was Chloromycetin. Yet it was felt that its medical contraindications far outweigh its use by the dental practitioner. 2. Tetracycline was the least effective antibiotic. 3. Penicillin, because of its high potency against microorganisms of the dental abscess, should be considered the drug of choice. Its use, however, must be restricted to patients who give a negative history to allergies and/or asthma; when such a history is positive, erythromycin should be used. 4. Appropriate culture and sensitivity tests should be performed to determine the susceptibility of the causative organism(s) to the drug of choice.

Twenty consecutive hospital patients who were to have periodontal surgery were assigned to one of two groups in a double blind clinical study. Ten were placed on tetracycline 250 mg, 6 times per day for 5 days. The other ten were given an identical appearing placebo 6 times per day for 5 days. The capsules were placed in a brown envelope so that neither the patient nor the periodontist knew which medication was being administered. The patients were randomly assigned to one of the two groups and were evaluated subjectively and objectively on the 3rd day and the 7th day. Statistically there were no differences between the two groups. In both groups there was some inflammation on the 3rd day but on the 7th day, it had subsided. Tetracycline is not recommended for routine prophylactic use in periodontal surgery.
