Computed tomographic assessment of intraperitoneal fluid distribution prior to intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.

Intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPCT) is under evaluation in patients with ovarian cancer. Computed tomographic peritoneography (CTP) prior to IPCT establishes the distribution of the infusate, which if complete, demonstrates the patient's suitability for this method of treatment. We report our method of CTP and describe the intraperitoneal fluid distribution and complications encountered in 28 patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma being considered for IPCT.

The influence of type of tube and experience of the operator on performance of small bowel enema.

Seventy patients underwent small bowel enema (SBE) to assess the influence of experience of the radiologist on the ease of jejunal intubation and the adequacy of SBE using two types of tubes. Comparing intubation time, intubation screening time, total screening time and total room time, we conclude that jejunal intubation is achieved easily, in a reasonable time with both types of tube, by all grades of radiologist, although the experienced operator using the Silk tube achieved intubation in a significantly shorter time. Overall patient acceptability was satisfactory (75%) but was better using the Silk tube, with which entero-gastric reflux and vomiting were less.

The value of soft tissue signs in wrist trauma.

A retrospective study of the wrist radiographs of 1453 patients presenting with acute wrist trauma was undertaken in order to assess the value of soft tissue signs. A total of 773 radiographs which were judged to be normal were used to evaluate the normal pronator quadratus fat stripe. The distance of the normal pronator fat stripe from the radius was shown to be significantly lower in females than in males and increased with age. The increase with age was greater in males. Although most fractures were associated with some soft tissue abnormality, certain fractures, especially greenstick fractures in children, had normal soft tissue planes. Only 4% of the wrists examined had soft tissue abnormalities with no visible fracture. The presence of soft tissue signs should therefore be considered with suspicion when evaluating wrist radiographs in trauma, but the absence of signs does not necessarily exclude a fracture.

Radiographic and ultrasound appearances of an intra-mural haematoma of the pylorus.

The case of a haemophilic baby boy who developed a pyloric haematoma due to trauma caused by a feeding gastrostomy catheter balloon is presented. Intramural gastric haematomas are rare and the authors are not aware of any previous reports of intramural haematomas affecting the pylorus alone in this age group. The barium meal appearances of the pyloric haematoma were identical to those seen in hypertrophic pyloric stenosis but ultrasound demonstrated a circumferential pyloric haematoma.
