[Hair analysis for evaluation of selenium status in Managua population (Nicaragua)].

Mean hair selenium of Managua citizens--743 mg/kg--was higher than of Moscow citizens. Significant differences were detected between groups of citizens with different social sighs: those with low income and perhaps irrational nutrition possess hair selenium value smaller (598 +/- 46 mg/kg) than those with relatively high income (713 +/- 40 mg/kg). Among recent country emigrants hair selenium was round to be the highest--898 +/- 60 mg/kg. This group of people possesses extremely low social status and consumes exclusively corn and beans. Wide interval of selenium concentrations for cereals of Nicaragua: 92 divided by 2580 mg/kg for corn and 18 divided by 814 mg/kg for beans--suggests mosaic selenium distribution in the soils of Nicaragua and consequently high possibility of different human selenium status levels.

[Cellular glucocorticoid reception in man and differences in type of reaction to stress].

Three groups of individuals were investigated, which differed in constitution and reaction to stress. Group I comprised randomly selected individuals. Groups II and III were formed of highly qualified athletes, weight lifters and marathoners who matched those from Group I. Studies of the hormonal profile revealed significant differences in the baseline cortisol levels between Groups II and III. Evaluation of parameters of glucocorticoid reception by cultured individuals' fibroblasts also showed significant differences between Groups II and III. Employment of complex quantitative characteristics of potential cell sensitivity to the effect of physiological glucocorticoid concentrations, and of the resting biological effect of this hormone, characterising the efficacy of glucocorticoid reception in postreceptor and glucocorticoid-dependent processes in somatic cells, allowed for adequate qualitative evaluation of glucocorticoid-dependent reactions to stress on the cellular level which is indicative of the stress reaction type of the organism as a whole. Thus, genetically determined variability of cellular parameters was first revealed, the parameters being directly related to the ontogenetic formation of the stress reaction type. It is biologically understandable that this variability correlates with human resistance to long-term psychosomatic stress.

[Dynamics of the level of antibodies to protein antigens of the Meningococcus serogroup A in the serum of patients with meningococcal infection].

Two characteristics were determined in the sera of patients by means of radioimmunoassay (RIA) techniques: the RIA titer and the characteristic indicating the presence of highly avid antibodies in the serum. This investigation revealed that in the sera of patients with meningococcal infection of moderate severity the values of the RIA titer of IgM, IgG and IgA, as well as the values indicating the levels of highly avid IgM, IgG and IgA, increased as the infection progressed. In patients with the severe form of meningococcal infection the values of the RIA titer of IgA and IgA increased, while the RIA titer of IgG remained practically unchanged. No dynamic changes in the characteristics indicating the presence of highly avid antibodies in the serum were observed.

[Comparative iodination of a series of allergens].

The study of 27 allergens, carried out with the use of the standard technique of chloramine iodination by Hunter's method, revealed that the biological properties of the allergens were not essentially related to their capacity for binding 125I, this capacity being, on the whole, low. The blood sera of patients with allergic diseases were found to be no different from the blood sera of healthy persons in their capacity for binding 125I.

[Immunohormonal homeostasis in meningococcal meningitis].

The examination of 18 patients with meningococcal infection has revealed the presence of reciprocal relationships between changes in the content of cortisol and triiodothyronine in their blood, especially at the beginning of the disease. The dynamics of changes in the concentration of rosette-forming cells has proved to be similar to that of changes in the concentration of triiodothyronine. A decrease in the level of thyroid hormones in the blood has been observed in experimental infections and oncological processes in mice, rats or guinea pigs, as well as after the injection of adjuvants into these animals. The centroid factor analysis with the use of the criteria of symmetry and asymmetry has revealed 3 main factors in the process under study, interpreted as follows: the homeostasis destabilization factor of infectious nature (F1), the homeostasis maintenance and restoration factor of endogenous nature (F2) and the factor of the integral relationship catabolism/anabolism between energy streams in the body (F3).

[Substrate reaction concentration in chloramine iodination].

The conditions of chloramine iodization of peptides of different nature have been systematically studied. The empirical formula permitting the calculation of the optimal aliquot of polypeptide without additional experiments is proposed; this method ensures the saturation of peptide molecules with iodine approximately to a level of 1 iodine atom per molecule.

[Radiocompetitive method of H antigen determination].

The authors describe a radiocompetitive method of H-d-monomere determination with the sensitivity of 2 ng/ml in double antibodies modification; this method was used for comparing the immunological affinity of the affiliated H-antigens. A difference between the immunological affinity to the antibodies in a monomere, polymere and the flagellum was shown.

[Combinatorial relations in the EEG spectrum].

The geometric mean frequency of any EEG wave divides its frequency band B into sub-bands b and s. For the wave beta the values s, b and B are the subsequent elements of the geometric progression with denominator equals to the invariant of the gold section. A hypothesis was proposed that all the EEG waves were described by the system SG of the recurrence equations. This system was derived by the generalization of the Fibonacci generating function. Theoretical invariants Ilambda of the system and experimental ratios b/s were found to coincide with the quadratic mean error equals to 1%. The system SG predicts the existence of the EEG waves, rho and sigma (55-118, 118-225 cycles per sec.), which have not yet been discovered experimentally.

[The adaptational properties and immunoregulatory action of a preparation of proteolytic enzymes in experimental stress].

The use of the experimental model of the development of acute secondary immunodeficiency, accompanied by the redistribution of immunoglobulins from plasma to blood cells, for evaluating the effect of immunomodulation is substantiated. The preparation of proteolytic enzymes Wobenzym [correction of "Vobenzyme"] has been shown to produce significant and dose-dependent decrease the sorption of immunoglobulins on mouse cells in the process of swimming.

[Assessment of the somatotropic function of the hypophysis in patients with hypophyseal nanism and gonadal dysgenesis by using the insulin-tolerance and arginine-tolerance tests].

With the aid of insulin-tolerance and arginine tolerance tests (ITT and ATT, respectively) somatotropic function of the hypophysis was assessed in 18 patients with hypophyseal nanism and in 12--with gonad dysgenesis. A marked delay in development and a premature exhaustion of the STH secretion was noted in the patients wiht hypophyseal nanism. In patients with gonad dysgenesis the STH secretion was somewhat redeced during the ITT. A change in the STH secretion was accompanied by a parallel depression of insulin secretion during the ATT. Patients with hypophyseal nanism displayed a correlation between the extent of growth delay and the value of the STH secretion during the ITT (R=0.6, P smaller than 0.05).

[Minor fatty acids of biological fluids of urogenital organs and their significance in the diagnosis of inflammatory processes].

Minor lipid components (less than 1%), not occurring in the cells of mammals, have been detected in the profile of fatty acids (FA) in urine and vaginal fluid in females, as well as in ejaculate in males, by the method of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Their origin is supposedly attributed to microorganisms colonizing urogenital organs under normal conditions and in infectious pathology. Minor FA in the biological fluids of the urogenital tract (UGT) in man are compared with the FA composition of pure microbial cultures. The statistical analysis of FA concentrations in 500 specimens of UGT biological fluids indicates that lipid markers of microbial origin (in UGT inflammatory diseases) have a range of quantitative changes exceeding the limits of values characteristic of healthy persons and in a number of cases correlate with the diagnosis of the disease or the results of the bacteriological study. The reliability of the interpretation of the results of the marker analysis is confirmed by the difference in the composition of UGT microorganisms under normal conditions and in pathology, correlation with the clinical picture of pathological deviations, a decrease (to zero or normal values) in the concentration of the markers of pathogens as the result of treatment with antibiotics, as well as by the adequate composition of UGT microorganisms, determined by the marker method in comparison with the cultural biochemical method.

[Study of the somatotropic function of the pituitary gland and the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal glands in rats with alloxan diabetes].

The somatotropichormone (STH) content was studied in the hypophysis and the peripheral blood of rats with alloxan diabetes; the corticosterone content was determined in their peripheral blood. The STH content in the peripheral blood and the hypophysis of these rats failed to differ from that in the control group, but the blood STH content rose considerably in the sick animals. Exclusion of the insular apparatus function was accompanied by the adrenal gland hypertrophy, which correlated with the rise of the blood corticosterone level. The data obtained indicated that the insular apparatus insufficiency induced by alloxan was accompanied by changes in the somatotropic function of the hypophysis and of glucocorticoid function of the adrenal glands.
