[Mechanisms of the lactogenic action of thyroid hormones and nonspecific resistance in ruminants].

Studied was the effect of thyroid hormones on the nonspecific resistance and the milk productivity of ruminant animals in the conditions of hypodynamia and in various functional conditions of the thyroid gland. Both the removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy) and the hypofunction of the gland (as induced by ammonium perchlorate at 10 mg/kg body mass) were accompanied by the drop of the indices characterizing the nonspecific resistance of the animals as well as their milk productivity. The immobilization of lactating ruminant animals (hypodynamia) had a negative impact on the milk producing process, enhanced the incretion of ACTH, lowered the release of thyroid hormones (T3, T4, FT4) and decreased milk productivity, deteriorating the biologic properties of colostrum. The thyroid gland and its hormones (T4, T3) were shown to have a positive effect on milk secretion, raising the activity of the enzyme adenylate cyclase and the amount of the cyclic 3.5 cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in the parenchymal tissue of the mammary gland.

[Changes in the T-wave configuration in the ECG telemetry of cows].

Radiotelemetric and biochemical investigations were carried out with a total of 40 freshly calved cows, divided into two groups in dependence on the form of the T wave of ECG. It was found that the biphase T wave spoke of the individual capacity of the body; it was retained only during the first months of the lactation period, and later on changed into a negative T wave. The configuration of the T wave was not essentially affected by the blood serum levels of total protein, blood sugar, LDH, AcAT, AlAT, Ca, P, and Mg. In the study of the alkaline-acid state dependable differences were established with the gas exchange of oxygen as measured by the indices pO2, SAT, and O2CT which were shown to be higher in cows with a biphase T wave. The registration of a positive branch of the biphase T wave was associated with the enhancement of excitation of the right chamber and the registration of its vector. In normal conditions the latter was not demonstrated by the dominating biopotentials of the left chamber.

[ECG telemetry in cows].

By the method of ECG telemetry was investigated the cardiac, activity in 245 cows, from which 125--in the lactation period, 48--pregnant and 112--new-calved. It was established that the cardiac frequency in pregnant cows is 83.3 min-1, in new-calved--83.7 min-1 and in milch-cows--86.3 min-1. The elements of ECG are similar in value for the separated groups of cows, and are in the limits for the peak P by amplitude--from 0.22 to 0.24 mV and duration--from 0.080 to 0.083 s, for the peak R the amplitude is from 1.17 to 1.20 mV and the duration--from 0.063 to 0.065 s. The values of interval and segment P--Q, of segment S-T, interval Q--T and segment T--P are shown. Proved are changes in the shape and duration of the T wave, which occurs as diphasic in the pregnant and new-calved cows--up to 45% and in the milch-cows--9.6%.

[Natural resistance and immunological reactivity in pigs weaned at various ages].

Studies were carried out on the changes in some indices of the natural resistance and immunologic response (total protein, monoamino-oxidase, and lysozyme, antibacterial, and phagocytic activity, and erythrocyte-rosette forming cells and antibody activity) of the blood of pigs that were weaned and vaccinated at 42, 28, and 18 days. The dynamic of these indices in the process of weaning and vaccination as well as in a 3-week period pointed to certain advantages with pigs weaned at more advanced age.

[Rumen metabolism and nonspecific resistance of early-weaned lambs reared by different technics].

Studied was the effect of various technologies of industrial raising--battery-cell, and loose-box--as well as of stress factors on the functional shaping of rumen metabolism and the motor activity of the forestomach, and the unspecific resistance, growth, development, and morbidity rate of early weaned lambs from the 1st to the 75th day. It was found that early weaned (on the 3rd day of age) artificially raised and nourished with a milk replacer lambs exhibited a comparatively low natural resistance. Those of the lambs that were kept in battery cells gave losses amounting up to 5 animals (13.9 per cent) due to bronchopneumonia and white muscle disease. With the use of the group box technology of raising the death cases were 3 (8.3 per cent), 2 of which were due to tympanits. Loosely raised lambs with their ewes showed higher average daily gain (24.9 per cent) as against those raised after the group box system; it was also higher (25.9 per cent) than that of lambs raised in battery cells. With lambs raised in boxes the total locomotor activity of the forestomach proved higher (991 units) as compared to lambs kept in battery (670); it proved lower than that in lambs raised together with their ewes.

[Action of Bacitrafen Premix on layers and broilers].

Observations were made concerning the effect of Bacitraphen-Premix, consumed by poultry with their food. It was proved that similarly to other nutritive antibiotics, the preparation agreed well with them. It was also proved that it does not show toxicity--LD0 and LD50 were higher than the maximal does applied. Bacitraphen-Premix had a positive effect on the egg-laying abilities of layers, as well as on the fecundity ability and incubation qualities of eggs. It showed a definite antistress effect due to which it can be successfully used as a prophylactic means in poultry-raising in case of stress reactions.
