X-ray imaging: a generalized approach using phase-space tomography.

We discuss the role of coherence in x-ray imaging and consider how phase-space tomography can be used to extract information about partial coherence. We describe the application of phase-space tomography to x-ray imaging and recover the spatial coherence properties of a one-dimensional soft (1.5 keV) x-ray beam from a synchrotron undulator source. We present phase-space information from a Young's experiment and observe negative regions in the quasi-probability distribution. We show that, given knowledge of the coherence of the beam, we can use partially coherent diffraction data to recover fully coherent information, and we present some simple experimental demonstrations of this capability.

X-ray phase vortices: theory and experiment.

We review the current work on x-ray phase vortices. We explain the role of an x-ray vortex in phase recovery and speculate on its possible applications in other fields of x-ray optical research. We present our theoretical understanding of the structure of phase vortices and test these predictions against experiment. We present experimental observations of phase vortices with charge greater than 3 and observe that their propagation appears to be consistent with our theoretical models.

Photoabsorption study of Bacillus megaterium, DNA and related biological materials in the phosphorus K-shell edge region.

We measured the X-ray transmission spectra of several biologically related samples in the phosphorus K-shell edge absorption region. These include red phosphorus, hydrated sodium phosphate (Na(3)PO(4).12 H(2)O), deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), diolylphosphatidyl choline (DOPC), and Bacillus megaterium spores. Red phosphorus essentially displays an edge-jump. All other spectra are similar in form and energy position: Each is dominated by a narrower, more intense first peak and a broader but less intense second peak. The corresponding K-shell edge absorption thresholds are shifted toward higher energy relative to that for red phosphorus, as expected for increasing degrees of phosphorus oxidation. The B. megaterium spectrum has aspects common to both the phosphate and DNA spectra and is therefore interpreted as a composite of spectra arising from DNA, ribonucleic acid (RNA) and phosphates within the spore. The B. megaterium spore spectrum provides information for resonant radiation damage studies in the phosphorus K-shell edge absorption region by identifying candidate photoexcitations. In addition, the absorption spectra will be useful in X-ray microscopy and macromolecular crystallography studies at the phosphorus K-shell edge.

Elastic coupling of silica gel dynamics in a liquid-crystal-aerosil dispersion.

The dynamics of a thixotropic silica aerosil gel dispersed in an octylcyanobiphenyl liquid crystal were directly probed by x-ray intensity fluctuation spectroscopy. For all samples, the time-autocorrelation function of the gel was well described by a modified-exponential function over the q range studied. Compared to a pure gel sample, a dilute (0.06 g cm(-3)) gel embedded within the liquid crystal displayed more complex and temperature dependent dynamics. Near the second-order smectic-A-to-nematic phase transition of the liquid crystal the gel relaxation became significantly more complex and slower (tau approximately 2150 s) compared to relaxations observed well within either phase. This clearly demonstrates coupling between the dynamics of the gel and the host liquid crystal, consistent with critical slowing down of smectic and director fluctuations. A random dampening field, elastically coupled to the liquid crystal, would explain the earlier observed crossover of this transition towards 3d-XY behavior.
