Management of recycling in the Gulf Co-operation Council states.

Although some of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) member states have placed recycling at the top of their waste management priorities, the low cost of landfill and the availability of land, usually old sand or gravel quarries, make recycling programs infeasible, uneconomical and unachievable. The only comprehensive form of recycling available within the GCC states is recycling of paper and cartons. The majority of the GCC states never set national or regional recycling targets. The cost of recycling in the GCC states region could be moderate to high depending on the collection system selected for the recycling program. Almost all of the cities within the GCC states use mechanised systems for daily collection of municipal solid waste (MSW). Therefore, the same daily collection system used for MSW might well be used for collection of recyclable materials, both on the same day and at the same time, or according to a different timetable. This paper provides strategies for developing an effective recycling marketing program and discusses regional co-ordination options.

Environmental management of construction and demolition waste in Kuwait.

There is an increasing pressure on the construction industry to reduce costs and improve the quality of our environment. The fact is that both of these goals can be achieved at the same time. Although construction and demolition (C&D) constitutes a major source of waste in terms of volume and weight, its management and recycling efforts have not yet seen the light in Kuwait. This study focuses on recycling efforts leading to the minimization of the total C&D waste that is currently landfilled in Kuwait. This paper presents the current status of C&D waste disposal system in Kuwait and identifies the potential problems to the environment, people and economy. Then, it investigates alternative solutions to manage and control this major type of waste in an economically efficient and environmentally safe manner. Next, the paper describes the feasibility of establishing a C&D waste recycling facility in Kuwait. It concludes by highlighting the major benefits and bottleneck problems with such a recycling facility.

Nitrogen transformations during aerobic/anoxic sludge digestion.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study and compare nitrogen transformations occurring under both aerobic digestion and aerobic/anoxic (A/A) digestion. The process performance was examined at different sludge residence times (SRTs), temperatures and anoxic cycles. Both modes of operation gave comparable solids reduction results. However, introduction of anoxic periods to aerobic sludge digestion appears to be a promising alternative to control pH during digestion through endogenous nitrate respiration (ENR). Operating an aerobic digester with an anoxic phase to achieve complete denitrification would also improve supernatant quality over that achieved solely by aerobic digestion. Alternating A/A operation can conserve most of the influent alkalinity and maintain near neutral pH condition over prolonged periods. The A/A digestion of mixed primary/waste-activated sludge achieved up to 43.7% reductions in volatile suspended solids, 33.7% removal of total nitrogen, and a specific ENR rate of 5.75 x 10(-2) mg NO3-N/mg VSSd. Optimum results were obtained at 10 d SRT, 30 degrees C temperature, and 50% anoxic cycle length.
