Standards for medical device communication: X73 PoC-MDC.

When using a number of medical devices from very different manufacturers with different proprietary formats the problem of a lack of interoperability emerges. Connectivity and communications are then limited and the systems and users can not exploit all the possibilities that Information and Communication Technologies offer today. The use and application of standards can be the solution to bring light to this confusion of languages in this Tower of Babel. There are several standards applicable to medical information systems interoperability and, analyzing these different options, the X73 PoC-MDC (ISO11073/IEEE1073) set of standards for Point of Care Medical Device Communication is the best positioned international standard to provide interoperability in these communications.

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta) induces tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) expression on mouse myeloid multipotent cell line 32D cl3 and inhibits their proliferation.

Interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1alpha) and beta (IL-1beta) are well known factors that stimulate hematopoiesis, nevertheless there are reports that show that they can also inhibit this activity. While both IL-1alpha and IL-1beta induce the expression of hematopoietic cytokines, such as growth factors and their receptors on myeloid cells, helping thus to regulate hematopoiesis, it is not known if their inhibitory activity is also mediated through the induction of other specific cytokines. In this work we show that recombinant human IL-1beta (rhIL-1beta) inhibits the proliferation of a mouse IL-3-dependent myeloid multipotent cell line (32D cl3), without inducing its differentiation. We show that rhIL-1beta induces in 32D cl3 cells the expression of the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) gene, a well known growth inhibitor, and that the rhIL-1beta growth inhibition property on 32D cl3 cells is partially due to this secreted TNF-alpha, hinting thus that the inhibition of hematopoiesis by IL-1 is mediated through other induced cytokines.

The Gravettian occipital bone from the site of Malladetes (Barx, Valencia, Spain).

The juvenile occipital bone from the site of Malladetes in Valencia (Spain) is described and compared with other European Pleistocene representatives of the genus Homo. This specimen derives from a Gravettian cultural context and has been AMS radiocarbon-dated to 25,120 +/- 240 years BP. As such, it provides evidence on early modern human anatomy from the Central Mediterranean region of the Iberian peninsula. The clear evidence for a late survival of Neandertals in southern Iberia, has led to considerable debate surrounding the biological and cultural interactions between these Pleistocene humans and their early modern human successors, and it is within this context that the Malladetes specimen represents an important contribution to the discussion. The recently discovered Upper Paleolithic infant from the site of Lagar Velho in Portugal is said to show a mosaic of Neandertal and early modern human characteristics throughout the skeleton and is argued to represent the strongest evidence yet recovered in favor of hybridization between these two Pleistocene populations. Our analysis of the Malladetes occipital, however, reveals no evidence of Neandertal genetic influence.

Remote processing server for ECG-based clinical diagnosis support.

In this paper, we present the development of a remote server that provides a user-friendly access to advanced electrocardiographic (ECG) signal processing techniques. The prototype supplies telemedicine facilities to doctors for clinical indexes remote computation to support diagnosis through the Internet. The user-friendly interface is based on the selection of the desired ECG signal processing tools on a Web browser window. The centralized structure of the system permits unique and user-independent update and management of the software and, therefore, is especially suitable for remote or rural regions to have access to the new ECG information techniques.
