Wavelet-based neural network analysis of internal carotid arterial Doppler signals.

In this study, internal carotid arterial Doppler signals recorded from 130 subjects, where 45 of them suffered from internal carotid artery stenosis, 44 of them suffered from internal carotid artery occlusion and the rest of them were healthy subjects, were classified using wavelet-based neural network. Wavelet-based neural network model, employing the multilayer perceptron, was used for analysis of the internal carotid arterial Doppler signals. Multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used to detect stenosis and occlusion in internal carotid arteries. In order to determine the MLPNN inputs, spectral analysis of the internal carotid arterial Doppler signals was performed using wavelet transform (WT). The MLPNN was trained, cross validated, and tested with training, cross validation, and testing sets, respectively. All these data sets were obtained from internal carotid arteries of healthy subjects, subjects suffering from internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion. The correct classification rate was 96% for healthy subjects, 96.15% for subjects having internal carotid artery stenosis and 96.30% for subjects having internal carotid artery occlusion. The classification results showed that the MLPNN trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was effective to detect internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion.

Suppression of impulse noise in medical images with the use of Fuzzy Adaptive Median Filter.

A new rule based fuzzy filter for removal of highly impulse noise, called Rule Based Fuzzy Adaptive Median (RBFAM) Filter, is aimed to be discussed in this paper. The RBFAM filter is an improved version of Adaptive Median Filter (AMF) and is presented in the aim of noise reduction of images corrupted with additive impulse noise. The filter has three stages. Two of those stages are fuzzy rule based and last stage is based on standard median and adaptive median filter. The proposed filter can preserve image details better then AMF while suppressing additive salt & pepper or impulse type noise. In this paper, we placed our preference on bell-shaped membership function instead of triangular membership function in order to observe better results. Experimental results indicates that the proposed filter is improvable with increased fuzzy rules to reduce more noise corrupted images and to remove salt and pepper noise in a more effective way than what AMF filter does.

Automated diagnostic systems with diverse and composite features for Doppler ultrasound signals.

In this paper, we present the automated diagnostic systems for Doppler ultrasound signals classification with diverse and composite features and determine their accuracies. We compared the classification accuracies of six different classifiers, namely multilayer perceptron neural network (MLP), combined neural network (CNN), mixture of experts (ME), modified mixture of experts (MME), probabilistic neural network (PNN), and support vector machine (SVM), which were trained on diverse or composite features. The present study was conducted with the purpose of answering the question of whether the automated diagnostic systems improve the capability of classification of ophthalmic arterial (OA) and internal carotid arterial (ICA) Doppler signals. Our research demonstrated that the SVM trained on composite feature and the MME trained on diverse features achieved accuracy rates which were higher than that of the other automated diagnostic systems.

Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system for classification of EEG signals using wavelet coefficients.

This paper describes the application of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) model for classification of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Decision making was performed in two stages: feature extraction using the wavelet transform (WT) and the ANFIS trained with the backpropagation gradient descent method in combination with the least squares method. Five types of EEG signals were used as input patterns of the five ANFIS classifiers. To improve diagnostic accuracy, the sixth ANFIS classifier (combining ANFIS) was trained using the outputs of the five ANFIS classifiers as input data. The proposed ANFIS model combined the neural network adaptive capabilities and the fuzzy logic qualitative approach. Some conclusions concerning the saliency of features on classification of the EEG signals were obtained through analysis of the ANFIS. The performance of the ANFIS model was evaluated in terms of training performance and classification accuracies and the results confirmed that the proposed ANFIS model has potential in classifying the EEG signals.

Classification of aorta insufficiency and stenosis using neuro-fuzzy system.

Cardiac Doppler signals recorded from aorta valve of 60 patients were transferred to a personal computer by using a 16 bit sound card. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) method was applied to the recorded signal from each patient. Since FFT method inherently cannot offer a good spectral resolution at jet blood flows such as cardiac Doppler signals, it sometimes causes wrong interpretation. In order to do a good interpretation and rapid diagnosis, cardiac Doppler blood flow signals were statistically arranged and then classified using neuro-fuzzy system. The NEFCLASS model, which is used to create a fuzzy classification system from data, was used. The classification results show that neuro-fuzzy system offers best results in the case of diagnosis.

Combining neural network and genetic algorithm for prediction of lung sounds.

Recognition of lung sounds is an important goal in pulmonary medicine. In this work, we present a study for neural networks-genetic algorithm approach intended to aid in lung sound classification. Lung sound was captured from the chest wall of The subjects with different pulmonary diseases and also from the healthy subjects. Sound intervals with duration of 15-20 s were sampled from subjects. From each interval, full breath cycles were selected. Of each selected breath cycle, a 256-point Fourier Power Spectrum Density (PSD) was calculated. Total of 129 data values calculated by the spectral analysis are selected by genetic algorithm and applied to neural network. Multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network employing backpropagation training algorithm was used to predict the presence or absence of adventitious sounds (wheeze and crackle). We used genetic algorithms to search for optimal structure and training parameters of neural network for a better predicting of lung sounds. This application resulted in designing of optimum network structure and, hence reducing the processing load and time.

A new microcontroller-based human brain hypothermia system.

Many studies show that artificial hypothermia of brain in conditions of anesthesia with the rectal temperature lowered down to 33 degrees C produces pronounced prophylactic effect protecting the brain from anoxia. Out of the methods employed now in clinical practice for reducing the oxygen consumption by the cerebral tissue, the most efficacious is craniocerebral hypothermia (CCH). It is finding even more extensive application in cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, neurorenimatology and many other fields of medical practice. In this study, a microcontroller-based designed human brain hypothermia system (HBHS) is designed and constructed. The system is intended for cooling and heating the brain. HBHS consists of a thermoelectric hypothermic helmet, a control and a power unit. Helmet temperature is controlled by 8-bit PIC16F877 microcontroller which is programmed using MPLAB editor. Temperature is converted to 10-bit digital and is controlled automatically by the preset values which have been already entered in the microcontroller. Calibration is controlled and the working range is tested. Temperature of helmet is controlled between -5 and +46 degrees C by microcontroller, with the accuracy of +/-0.5 degrees C.

Detection of ophthalmic arterial doppler signals with Behcet disease using multilayer perceptron neural network.

Doppler ultrasound is known as a reliable technique, which demonstrates the flow characteristics and resistance of ophthalmic arteries. In this study, ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals were obtained from 106 subjects, 54 of whom suffered from ocular Behcet disease while the rest were healthy subjects. Multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) employing delta-bar-delta training algorithm was used to detect the presence of ocular Behcet disease. Spectral analysis of the ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals was performed by least squares (LS) autoregressive (AR) method for determining the MLPNN inputs. The MLPNN was trained with training set, cross validated with cross validation set and tested with testing set. All these data sets were obtained from ophthalmic arteries of healthy subjects and subjects suffering from ocular Behcet disease. Performance indicators and statistical measures were used for evaluating the MLPNN. The correct classification rate was 96.43% for healthy subjects and 93.75% for unhealthy subjects suffering from ocular Behcet disease. The classification results showed that the MLPNN employing delta-bar-delta training algorithm was effective to detect the ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals with Behcet disease.

Automatic detection of erthemato-squamous diseases using adaptive neuro- fuzzy inference systems.

A new approach based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was presented for detection of erythemato-squamous diseases. The domain contained records of patients with known diagnosis. Given a training set of such records, the ANFIS classifiers learned how to differentiate a new case in the domain. The six ANFIS classifiers were used to detect the six erythemato-squamous diseases when 34 features defining six disease indications were used as inputs. To improve diagnostic accuracy, the seventh ANFIS classifier (combining ANFIS) was trained using the outputs of the six ANFIS classifiers as input data. The proposed ANFIS model combined the neural network adaptive capabilities and the fuzzy logic qualitative approach. Some conclusions concerning the impacts of features on the detection of erythemato-squamous diseases were obtained through analysis of the ANFIS. The performances of the ANFIS model were evaluated in terms of training performances and classification accuracies and the results confirmed that the proposed ANFIS model has some potential in detecting the erythemato-squamous diseases. The ANFIS model achieved accuracy rates which were higher than that of the stand-alone neural network model.

Determining variability of ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals using Lyapunov exponents.

The new method presented in this study was directly based on the consideration that ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals are chaotic signals. This consideration was tested successfully using the nonlinear dynamics tools, like the computation of Lyapunov exponents. Multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) architecture was formulated and used as a basis for determining variabilities such as stenosis, ocular Behcet disease, and uveitis disease in the physical state of ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals. The computed Lyapunov exponents of the ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals were used as inputs of the MLPNN. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to assess the performance of the detection process. The ophthalmic arterial Doppler signals were classified with the accuracy varying from 93.75% to 97.06%. The results confirmed that the proposed MLPNN trained with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm has potential in detecting stenosis, Behcet disease and uveitis disease in ophthalmic arteries.

Improving medical diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound Doppler signals by combining neural network models.

There are a number of different quantitative models that can be used in a medical diagnostic decision support system including parametric methods (linear discriminant analysis or logistic regression), nonparametric models (k nearest neighbor or kernel density) and several neural network models. The complexity of the diagnostic task is thought to be one of the prime determinants of model selection. Unfortunately, there is no theory available to guide model selection. This paper illustrates the use of combined neural network models to guide model selection for diagnosis of ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial disorders. The ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial Doppler signals were decomposed into time-frequency representations using discrete wavelet transform and statistical features were calculated to depict their distribution. The first-level networks were implemented for the diagnosis of ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial disorders using the statistical features as inputs. To improve diagnostic accuracy, the second-level networks were trained using the outputs of the first-level networks as input data. The combined neural network models achieved accuracy rates which were higher than that of the stand-alone neural network models.

A mixture of experts network structure for modelling Doppler ultrasound blood flow signals.

Mixture of experts (ME) is a modular neural network architecture for supervised learning. This paper illustrates the use of ME network structure to guide modelling Doppler ultrasound blood flow signals. Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm was used for training the ME so that the learning process is decoupled in a manner that fits well with the modular structure. The ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial Doppler signals were decomposed into time-frequency representations using discrete wavelet transform and statistical features were calculated to depict their distribution. The ME network structures were implemented for diagnosis of ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial disorders using the statistical features as inputs. To improve diagnostic accuracy, the outputs of expert networks were combined by a gating network simultaneously trained in order to stochastically select the expert that is performing the best at solving the problem. The ME network structure achieved accuracy rates which were higher than that of the stand-alone neural network models.

Comparison of STFT and wavelet transform methods in determining epileptic seizure activity in EEG signals for real-time application.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in clinical settings to investigate neuropathology. Since EEG signals contain a wealth of information about brain functions, there are many approaches to analyzing EEG signals with spectral techniques. In this study, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and wavelet transform (WT) were applied to EEG signals obtained from a normal child and from a child having an epileptic seizure. For this purpose, we developed a program using Labview software. Labview is an application development environment that uses a graphical language G, usable with an online applicable National Instruments data acquisition card. In order to obtain clinically interpretable results, frequency band activities of delta, theta, alpha and beta signals were mapped onto frequency-time axes using the STFT, and 3D WT representations were obtained using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Both results were compared, and it was determined that the STFT was more applicable for real-time processing of EEG signals, due to its short process time. However, the CWT still had good resolution and performance high enough for use in clinical and research settings.

Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems for analysis of internal carotid arterial Doppler signals.

In this study, a new approach based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was presented for detection of internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion. The internal carotid arterial Doppler signals were recorded from 130 subjects that 45 of them suffered from internal carotid artery stenosis, 44 of them suffered from internal carotid artery occlusion and the rest of them were healthy subjects. To improve diagnostic accuracy, the fourth ANFIS classifier (combining ANFIS) was trained using the outputs of the three ANFIS classifiers as input data. The proposed ANFIS model combined the neural network adaptive capabilities and the fuzzy logic qualitative approach. Some conclusions concerning the impacts of features on the detection of internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion were obtained through analysis of the ANFIS. The performance of the ANFIS model was evaluated in terms of classification accuracies and the results confirmed that the proposed ANFIS classifiers have some potential in detecting the internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion. The ANFIS model achieved accuracy rates which were higher than that of the stand-alone neural network model.

Feature extraction from Doppler ultrasound signals for automated diagnostic systems.

This paper presented the assessment of feature extraction methods used in automated diagnosis of arterial diseases. Since classification is more accurate when the pattern is simplified through representation by important features, feature extraction and selection play an important role in classifying systems such as neural networks. Different feature extraction methods were used to obtain feature vectors from ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial Doppler signals. In addition to this, the problem of selecting relevant features among the features available for the purpose of classification of Doppler signals was dealt with. Multilayer perceptron neural networks (MLPNNs) with different inputs (feature vectors) were used for diagnosis of ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial diseases. The assessment of feature extraction methods was performed by taking into consideration of performances of the MLPNNs. The performances of the MLPNNs were evaluated by the convergence rates (number of training epochs) and the total classification accuracies. Finally, some conclusions were drawn concerning the efficiency of discrete wavelet transform as a feature extraction method used for the diagnosis of ophthalmic and internal carotid arterial diseases.

Spectral analysis of internal carotid arterial Doppler signals using FFT, AR, MA, and ARMA methods.

In this study, Doppler signals recorded from internal carotid artery of 45 subjects were processed by PC-computer using classical (fast Fourier transform) and model-based (autoregressive, moving average, autoregressive moving average (ARMA) methods) methods. Power spectral density estimates of internal carotid arterial Doppler signals were obtained using these spectral analysis methods. The variations in the shape of the Doppler power spectra as a function of time were presented in the form of sonograms in order to determine the degree of internal carotid artery stenosis. These Doppler power spectra and sonograms were then used to compare the applied methods in terms of their frequency resolution and the impact on determining stenosis in internal carotid arteries. Based on the results, performance characteristics of the autoregressive and ARMA methods were found extremely valuable for spectral analysis of internal carotid arterial Doppler signals obtained from healthy subjects and unhealthy subjects having artery stenosis.

Classification of carotid artery stenosis of patients with diabetes by neural network and logistic regression.

The blood flow hemodynamics of carotid arteries were obtained from carotid arteries of 168 individuals with diabetes using the 7.5 MHz ultrasound Doppler M-unit. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods were used for feature extraction from the Doppler signals on the time-frequency domain. The parameters, obtained from the Doppler sonograms, were applied to the mathematical models that were constituted to analyze the effect of diabetes on internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. In this study, two different mathematical models such as the traditional statistical method based on logistic regression and a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network were used to classify the Doppler parameters. The correct classification of these data was performed by an expert radiologist using angiograpy before they were executed by logistic regression and MLP neural networks. We classified the carotid artery stenosis into two categories such as non-stenosis and stenosis and we achieved similar results (correctly classified (CC) = 92.8%) in both mathematical models. But, as the degree of stenosis had been increased to 4 (0-39%, 40-59%, 60-79% and 80-99% diameter stenosis), it was found that the neural network (CC = 73.9%) became more efficient than the logistic regression analysis (CC = 67.7%). These outcomes indicate that the Doppler sonograms taken from the carotid arteries may be classified successfully by neural network.
