[Euconol in the treatment of patients with ischemic heart disease].

The clinical efficacy of the foodstuff euconol was studied in 72 patients with coronary heart diseases, stable angina of effort, postinfarct cardiosclerosis, or silent myocardial ischemia. A good antianginal effect was achieved in 51.4% of patients treated with euconol. At month 4 of treatment, the patients with coronary heart disease displayed a significant decrease in the number of anginal episodes and nitroglycerin tablets; this was followed by a reduction in the number and duration of silent myocardial ischemic episodes. It is concluded that a prolonged euconol intake causes positive changes in the blood lipid composition and natural history of coronary heart disease.

[Effects of nicardipine on the functional state of the liver in patients with ischemic heart disease].

Hepatic function was studied in 31 patients with coronary heart disease before and after treatment with nicardipine. Clinical and biochemical findings (enhanced gamma-glutamate transferase and high cholesterol, hepatobiliary syndrome) provide evidence for hepatic function disturbance associated with coronary heart disease. Nicardipine produced a good subjective response, the attenuation of hepatobiliary syndrome. Biochemical indices did not change.

[Use of dietary fish oil--an alternative to drug therapy of dyslipidemia].

The clinical efficacy of "Food ichthyenic oil", a new foodstuff, was studied in 129 patients with atherogenic dyslipidemia. The oil was given in a daily dose of 30 ml which contained 8 g polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 class. All the patients were divided into 3 groups: (1) 44 patients with 5.2-6.5 mmol/l cholesterol; (2) 37 with over 6.5 mmol/l, and (3) 48 with hypercholesterolemia (cholesterol over 5.2 mmol/l and hypertriglyceridemia (triglycerides over 2.3 mmol/l). Following 1-month therapy, all the groups displayed lower low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and significantly higher high density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. After 4-month intake of ichthyenic oil, the levels of total and LDL cholesterol returned to the baseline values, whereas the concentration of HDL cholesterol was significantly higher than the baseline one. Following 12-month therapy, there were 15 and 14% decreases in total and LDL cholesterol, respectively, a 16% increase in HDL cholesterol. The patients from Group 3 exhibited low VLDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

[Use of food products containing polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 group in patients with disorders of lipid metabolism].

The clinical efficiency of the ichtyenic oil obtained by processing some commercial fishes was explored. The oil was used as a supplement to foodstuffs: edible inchtyenic oil (EIO) in a daily dose of 30 g (containing 8.0 g omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids); dietary protein caviar (DPC) in a daily dose of 45 g (0.6 g omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids); an emulsified protein-and-fat product (EPFP) in a daily dose of 30 g (1.2 g fatty acids), EIO was given to 44 patients with dyslipidemia (Group 1), DPC to 12 (Group 2), and EPFP to 8 patients (Group 3). Following a month therapy, there was a decrease in total cholesterol (TC) by 12.2%, triglycerides (TG) by 28%, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) by 9.4%, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDLC) by 20.0%, whereas high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) rose by 15.3% in Group 1. Group 2 showed 12.4 and 20.8% reductions in TC and TG, respectively. In Group 3, TC and TG fell by 7.1 and 8.7%, respectively. In the two latter groups, lipoprotein cholesterol remained unaltered. Thus, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid-containing foods may be used to correct lipid metabolism disturbances in patients with atherogenic dyslipidemia.

[An automated biochemical laboratory. Prospective development].

A new Biolab information and computing system is intended for data processing from automated equipment for biochemical laboratory analysis; it is integrated with other subsystems of a large medical information system of a multidiscipline hospital. In technological characteristics and information volume processed the Biolab subsystem is much superior to the previous Laboratoriya subsystem.

[Inactivation of yeast inorganic pyrophosphatase by sodium dodecyl sulfate and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide].

The kinetics of the inactivation of yeast inorganic pyrophosphatase by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide were studied. Micellar forms of detergents were shown to be an active reagetns under conditions tudied. The possible scheme of the inactivation including reversible formation of the micellar-protein complex and subsequent penetration of the bound detergent molecules in the protein is proposed. The enzyme ionogenic group with pK 7-8 by 25 degrees C is found to be responsible for conformational changes of the enzymes. The influence of the specific ligands on inactivation of yeast pyrophosphatase by SDS is studied, and dissociations constants of corresponding enzyme-ligand complexes are calculated.

[Functional evaluation of the musculoskeletal system under an autonomous life support regimen based on data on blood biochemical indices].

The functional state of the musculo-skeletal system of healthy male volunteers of three age groups (Group 1--19-21 years, n = 16; Group 2--25-43 years, n = 26; Group 3--48-59 years, n = 30) was evaluated. The subjects were kept in an enclosure for 30 days. Creatine phosphokinase (CPK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase (AAT), calcium, P1 were measured in blood. The test subjects of the three groups showed a decrease of CPK, LDH, AAT and creatinine. The correlation coefficient between the enzymes varied from 0.64 to 1.00. By the end of the study alkaline phosphatase increased in the Group 1 and 2 subjects and decreased in the Group 3 subjects. Calcium variations were less distinct. The Pi content declined significantly in the Group 3 subjects. Some of the Group 3 subjects who performed regular exercises during the study exhibited smaller decreases of CPK, LDH, AAT and greater stability of calcium and phosphorus.
