[Cellular immunity indices in rectal cancer under surgical and combined treatment].

The dynamics of cell-mediated immunity indices in 83 patients with rectal tumors who underwent surgery or received combined treatment (preoperative radiation + surgery) was followed. Cellular immunity was assessed on the basis of PHA-induced blastogenic reaction of lymphocytes (BRL) and spontaneous rosette-formation. In rectal tumor patients, particularly at stage IV, the level of PHA-induced BRL and the total number of rosette-forming cells (RFC) were lower than in healthy donors. Surgery did not produce any significant changes in cell-mediated immunity parameters: level of PHA-induced BRL decreased by 16,7%, while total RFC number increased by 17.2% in (mostly low-affinity forms). Preoperative radiation resulted in a significant decrease in lymphocyte ability to undergo PHA-induced blast-transformation (45%) and spontaneous rosette formation, high-affinity lymphocytes being most sensitive to ionizing radiation. Their fraction decreased by half.

[Morphological characteristics of tumor tissue explants cultured in diffusion chambers].

With cultivation of explants of different human malignant tumors in diffusion chambers at the same study terms, differences in the ratio of epithelial-like and fibroblast-like cell growth were noticed with marked degeneration changes in one of these cel types, and in the ability to form spheroids from epithelial-like cells. These data are discussed in connection with the optimal time of obtaining the cell material ready for a further cultivation of cell suspensions, with the aim to prepare autovaccines for infection of patients with malignant tumors.

[Antitumor activity of the serum and lymphocytes of C57BL mice in chemical carcinogenesis].

In chemical carcinogenesis induced by methylcholanthrene in mice C57BL the antitumor activity of sera ind lymphocytes are studied, which was assessed by their capacity to inhibit-stimulate spheroid formation by autologous tumor cells. The serum of animals being at the initial stage of the blastomatous process is found to inhibit the formation of spheroids but to reduce the functional activity of lymphocytes, while in the terminal stage of blastoma growth it contributes to the enhancement of tumor growth under direct interaction with cell-targets or indirectly through lymphocytes.

[Immunological analysis of human lymphocytes bearing different surface receptors].

Cell surface receptors on human lymphocytes being studied, essential differences were revealed in a relative content of E-, EA- and EAC-rosette-forming cells in peripheral blood and tonsils. In tonsils, part of lymphocytes carrying receptors for sheep erythrocytes have been shown to possess C'3-receptors for sheep erythrocytes. Apparently, C'-receptor,--being B-lymphocyte surface marker,--may also appear at definite stages of T-cell differentiation.

[Lymph node cell composition and DNA content in their different lymphocyte populations in mice with tumor induced by murine Moloney sarcoma virus].

The ratio of T and B lymphocytes and DNA content in population enriched by these cells were analysed in the lymph nodes of BALB/c mice with progressively growing sarcomas induced by the MSV Moloney and in untreated mice. T lymphocyte enriched fractions have a higher DNA content in comparison to fractions enriched with B lymphocytes. Sarcoma development promotes a decrease in the relative number of macronucleolar lymphocytes and simultaneous decrease of micronucleolar ones in the lymph nodes, particularly in the regional ones.

[Comparative study of different types of rosette-forming cells in human peripheral blood and tonsils].

E-, EA-, and EAC-reaction of rosette formation and detection of surface immunoglobulins were applied to the comparative study of the peripheral blood lymphocytes populations and tonsils in man. The relative lymphocyte content with different surface characteristics differed significantly in these populations. In detection of surface immunoglobulins on EAC-rosette forming cells it was revealed that not all the C3-lymphocytes of the tonsils bore surface Ig. A possibility of appearance of the C3-receptor on the activated T-lymphocytes is discussed.

[Functional activity of the lymphocytes of mouse lymph nodes in a system of viral carcinogenesis].

A study was made of the PHA-induced lymphocyte blastransformation (BT), and lymphocyte antitumor activity, using a model of progressive and regressive neoplastic process induced by the Moloney virus in mice BALB/c. The antitumor acitvity of lymphocytes was estimated by their ability to inhibit spheroid production by tumor cells. A lymphocyte BT and their antitumor activity was registered during a progressive growth of the tumor and its restoration as the tumor is regressing.

[Immunologic reactivity of the body and the adrenal cortex function in the early period after administration of a carcinogen].

The level of immunological reactivity and the functional state of the adrenal cortex were studied simultaneously in BALB/c mice 7 days after a single injection of various doses of methylcholanthrene. There existed a definite correlation between the immunodepression induced by various doses of methylcholanthrene determined according to the amount of plaque-forming cells in the experimental mouse spleen and free and combined 11-corticosteroids content in the blood plasma after 7 days of the carcinogen injection. This evidence suggests that the adrenal cortex hormones play a definite role in the pathogenesis of immunodepression induced by chemical carcinogenesis.

[Effect of the removal of an induced tumor on the immunological reactivity of mice].

An extensive surgical intervention in removing a tumor-bearing limb induce in mice an enhancement of immunosuppression state, developed in the process of carcinogenesis. Rehabilitation of the immunocompetence in such mice proceeds in a more active way than in the control animals, subjected to the analogous amputation of the extremity.

[Autoradiographic study of DNA metabolism in different populations of lymphocytes during chemical carcinogenesis is mice of the BALB/c strain].

A correlation between macro- and micronuclear lymphocytes and their DNA metabolism was studied in the lymph nodes of BALB/c mice during the growth of methylcholanthrene sarcoma. The number of macronuclear lymphocytes was seen reduced along with a simultaneous increase of 3H-thymidine indices in regional lymph nodes during the tumor growth. The number of micronuclear lymphocytes of these lymph nodes was accordingly increasing. In distant lymph nodes the reaction was significantly less expressed.

[Role of the hypothalamus in the formation of antitumor resistance].

The development of Brown-Pearce tumor in rabbits is accompanied with regular changes in the functional activity of the hypothalamic zone, related close enough with the regulation of adrenal cortex functions and immunological processes. In electrostimulation of the posterior hypothalamus median zones an accelerated resorption of the tumor, inoculated subcutaneously, was noted. The destruction of the posteromedian hypothalamic structures resulted in a sharp fall of corticosteroids level in the organism and a decreased intensity of generally persistant immunity to repeat inoculations of Brown-Pearce tumor. Thus, the fact of the immunocompetent system being ready to realize protective reactions for preservation of the genetic constancy of the organism is conditioned by the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-adrenal system functional activity.

[Antitumor activity of the lymphocytes of BALB/c and C57BL mice during methylcholanthrene carcinogenesis].

By means of the elaborated by the authors method of inhibition by lymphocytes of spheroids production by tumor cells a quantitative estimation of their antitumor activity is given in mice BALB/c and C57BL in methylcholanthrene carcinogenesis, Lymphoid cells in mice BALB/c proved to be more active functionally than lymphocytes in mice C57BL. Antitumor action of the lymphocytes is high enough at early stages of blastoma development, lymphocytes from remote lymph nodes being mostly active. At terminal stage the effector action of lymphocytes is diminished.
