[Treatment of chronic diseases of the liver with catergen].

Fifty-seven patients with chronic liver diseases of different etiology were treated with catergen ((+)-cyanidanol 3) given in a dose of 1.5 g (3 tablets) a day throughout 3 months. The findings were compared with those derived in the control groups of patients (82) who received vitamins or essentiale. It was shown that catergen significantly improved some biochemical characteristics of the blood and indicators of the antipyrine test in patients with compensated liver cirrhosis of the viral and alcoholic etiology. In patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, catergen, like essentiale, exerted an inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation in the liver. There were no significant differences in the biochemical characteristics of the blood in patients with chronic alcoholic hepatitis treated with catergen and control group patients. In patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, catergen exerted an insignificant symptomatic effect but in single cases. The side dyspeptic effects which demanded the drug withdrawal were only recorded in 2 patients. It is concluded that catergen may be used in the treatment of virus- and alcohol-induced chronic liver diseases of moderate activity.

[Experimental study of the use of colchicine in alcoholic liver diseases].

Rats kept on a standard diet were subdivided into several experimental groups: group 1, control; group 2, animals receiving ethyl alcohol for 10 days; group 3, animals receiving ethyl alcohol for 3 months; group 4, animals receiving colchicine; group 5, animals receiving alcohol in combination with colchicine; group 6, animals receiving alcohol in combination with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4); and group 7, animals receiving alcohol in combination with CCl4 and colchicine. Electron microscopy of the rat liver has shown that colchicine inhibited significantly the onset of hepatic fibrosis and degenerative changes in hepatocyte organells induced by hepatotoxins (alcohol alone or alcohol in combination with CCl4). Colchicine also inhibited monooxygenase activity in the liver homogenate of experimental rats. Possible mechanisms of hepatoprotective colchicine effect are discussed.

[Diagnostic significance of determining the blood content of lactic and uric acids in chronic liver lesions of alcoholic and viral etiologies].

The concentration of lactic and uric acids in blood serum was measured in 115 patients with chronic liver lesions of virus (30 patients) and alcoholic (85 patients) etiology. The highest rise of lactic and uric acid concentrations was recorded in patients with alcoholic hepatitis and active alcoholic liver cirrhosis. The blood concentration of lactic and uric acids in alcoholic hepatopathy increased in parallel with an increment of the gravity of the pathological process, being the highest in patients with alcoholic hepatitis (lactic acid) and liver cirrhosis associated with the edematous ascites syndrome (uric acid). In inactive liver cirrhosis of alcoholic etiology, the concentrations of lactic and uric acids tended toward reduction, however, they were significantly higher than in the group of patients with virus liver lesions. Normal or negligible rises in the content of lactic and uric acids were seen in the groups of patients with chronic liver diseases of virus etiology. It is concluded that the measurement of the content of lactic and uric acids plays a diagnostic part in different patterns of alcoholic hepatopathies.
