[Present-day problems of complex hygienic evaluation of drinking water use].

The authors offer substantiated methodical approaches to complex evaluation of the sanitary reliability of drinking water supply systems. They recommend not only evaluating drinking water quality, but also assessing the sanitary state of water sources (catchment areas), the reliability of water preparation and transportation, the standards of water supply and the reliability of production laboratory control. A range of complex hygienic studies have demonstrated that the problems of Voronezh interurban reservoir as a water source are caused by its multi-purpose use. Under these conditions insufficient hygienic efficiency of the conventional water preparation schemes and low sanitary reliability of water transportation systems favors negative influence of water factor on population mortality. The offered methodical approaches give the systematic idea of factors that determine drinking water quality. Operative administrative decisions concerning hygienic safety of public water use may be made with these methodical approaches taken into consideration.

[Environmental and occupational problems of safe water supply].

The paper gives the results of hygienic studies which determine some priorities in formation of unfavourable sanitary conditions of potable water supply in a number of Russian Federation areas. A tendency is shown towards an increase in the content of chemicals with organoleptic and sanitary and toxicological hazards (3-17% rate of increase) in underground and surface water sources, a frequency growth of finding non-standard, by the epidemiological criteria (25%), water test characteristic of areas with intensive industrial and agricultural enterprises. There are risk factors found in the quality of potable water at the stages of water preparation (chlorination) and transportation (corrosion) for human health; data of fundamental studies are given, on hygienic substantiation of ecologically pure methods of water treatment (UV disinfection). Scientific developments have provided the basis for systematizing a number of considerations for basic documents for a law on water protection quality, by revealing and predicting the processes affecting the quality of potable water, improving adequate laboratory water quality monitoring.

[An analysis of the supramolecular organization of the olfactory neuroepithelium in the rat by freeze etching with rotary platinum-carbon shadow-casting].

The rat olfactory epithelium was analysed by freeze-deep etching and Pt/C rotary replication. Ultrathin sections and freeze-etching findings of proximal (dendrite) and distal (axon) parts of bipolar olfactory neurons are examined. The supramolecular organization of neuron membranes and intracellular cytoskeleton structure is studied. The role of the Schwann cells in formation of isolated axon bundles is discussed. Methods of the whole neuroepithelium preparation for freeze-etching and different easy approaches of obtaining the Pt/C rotary shadowing replicas with high resolution (15-20A) are presented.
