Effort-induced thrombosis: diagnosis with three-dimensional MR venography.

A case of Paget-von Schrötter syndrome diagnosed with gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) venography is described. MR enabled a comprehensive evaluation with identification of the thrombus within the left subclavian vein and a hypertrophied anterior scalene muscle as the probable cause of the patient's condition. We describe the MR venography technique used for evaluation of the subclavian vein and the imaging findings in this entity.

Cervical spine fractures in ankylosing spondylitis: MR findings.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the MR findings in patients with long-term ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and acute cervical spine fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of five patients with AS and acute cervical spine fractures were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of cervical spine instability, spinal cord compression, and epidural hematoma. RESULTS: Spinal fractures were unstable in all five patients. Three patients had neurological symptoms and abnormal signal within the spinal cord. All patients with neurological deficits had epidural hematomas posterior to the dural sac. CONCLUSION: MRI is useful for assessment of the integrity of intervertebral disks and spinal ligaments and, therefore, of the instability of the spinal fracture. MRI is mandatory in patients with neurological symptoms, especially in those with a symptom-free interval and those with neurological deterioration after established spinal cord injury, when suspicion for epidural hematoma is high.

Magnetic resonance imaging for disorders of liver vasculature.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a noninvasive technique to evaluate the hepatic vasculature. Angiographic and flow-based techniques include intrinsic properties of MRI as well as those that use contrast media. Clinical and technical perspectives of a wide range of vascular disorders affecting the liver, particularly cirrhosis and portal hypertension, portal vein obstruction, as well as imaging of the vasculature prior to and postliver transplantation are presented in this article.

Magnetic resonance imaging findings in solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney.

The magnetic resonance imaging findings in a patient with a large solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the kidney originating in the renal capsule are presented. SFT of the kidney is a rare, usually benign tumor with indolent clinical behavior. MRI revealed a diffusely hypointense mass on T2-weighted images without central necrosis despite the large size of the lesion. These imaging features, atypical for renal cell carcinoma, can suggest the diagnosis of SFT and may be an indication for attempting nephron-sparing surgery.
