Effectiveness of four school health education projects upon substance use, self-esteem, and adolescent stress.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of school health education projects on substance use, self-esteem, and stress. The subjects were 161 adolescents in fifth through eighth grades in four school health education projects funded through the Ohio Department of Health. Data collection included pretest/posttest questionnaires on self-report use of tobacco products, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs. In addition, the Hare Self-Esteem and the Adolescent Stress Symptomology Scales were utilized. There was a six-week interval between pretest and posttest administration. MANCOVA, with age as a covariate, was used to compare pretest/posttest scores for self-esteem and stress symptomology. Furthermore, interviews were conducted with project staff about the educational methodology of their intervention. The results revealed that the predominate educational method used by the projects was lecture/discussion. There were no significant differences between pretest/posttest questionnaires for frequency of substance use, self-esteem, or stress symptomology. Effective school health education programs need sufficient quantity and quality in order to have an impact on health behaviors and the intermediate health-enhancing variable of self-esteem.

Adolescent

Self-concept, stress symptomatology, and tobacco use.

This study examined psychosocial variables associated with cigarette use while controlling for developmental aspects of adolescence. The variables examined included self-esteem, home-esteem, peer-esteem, and adolescent symptomatology of stress. Nine hundred thirty-four students in grades four-12 from 12 schools in two southeastern Ohio counties participated in the study. Data were collected using the Hare Self-Concept Scale, the Adolescent Stress Symptomatology Scale, and a self-report tobacco use instrument. Multiple analyses of covariance were used and, if significant multivariate differences existed, univariate analyses were conducted. Results suggest adolescent cigarette use and intervention strategies should be viewed from a psychosocial and developmental perspective.

An exploration of health counseling and goal attainment scaling in health education programs.

This paper presents findings of an experimental study to test the effects of health counseling with seventh and eighth grade students (N = 32). Goal attainment scaling was used to monitor changes in health behavior during a 10-week period with each student meeting with a health counselor five times during the study. A pretest/posttest, repeated measures design with experimental and control groups was used to evaluate the influence of health counseling. The results revealed a significant increase in goal attainment scaling scores (F = 4.96). Health behaviors influenced were exercise and nutrition. There also was a significant increase in self-esteem (F = 8.42) and home-esteem (F = 4.24). The utilization of health counseling appears to be an attractive educational strategy to enhance the effectiveness of classroom instruction.
