Training effect in an exchange bias system: the role of interfacial domain walls.

Polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) is used to obtain the magnetic depth profile of an antiferromagnetically coupled ferrimagnetic/ferrimagnetic bilayer, Gd40Fe60/Tb12Fe88. This system shows a transition from positive to negative exchange bias field H(E) as the cooling field H(cf) is increased from small to large positive value. It also exhibits training behavior upon field cycling which affects H(E) and the coercive field H(C). From the PNR measurements at room temperature and at 15 K, we confirm that the magnetic configuration inside the TbFe layer is frozen when the sample is cooled in various H(cf). The thickness and pitch of the magnetic twist inside the TbFe layer depend on H(cf) and give rise to the observed differences in the bias field. Irreversible reorganization of the TbFe magnetization at the interface occurs upon GdFe magnetization reversal and is found to explain the training effect as well as the overall reduction in coercivity.

Pinpointing chiral structures with front-back polarized neutron reflectometry.

A new development in spin-polarized neutron reflectometry enables us to more fully characterize the nucleation and growth of buried domain walls in layered magnetic materials. We applied this technique to a thin-film exchange-spring magnet. After first measuring the reflectivity with the neutrons striking the front, we measure with the neutrons striking the back. Simultaneous fits are sensitive to the presence of spiral spin structures. The technique reveals previously unresolved features of field-dependent domain walls in exchange-spring systems and has sufficient generality to apply to a variety of magnetic systems.

Difference between blocking and Néel temperatures in the exchange biased Fe3O4/CoO system.

The blocking temperature T(B) has been determined as a function of the antiferromagnetic layer thickness in the Fe3O4/CoO exchange biased system. For CoO layers thinner than 50 A, T(B) is reduced below the Néel temperature T(N) of bulk CoO (291 K), independent of crystallographic orientation or film substrate ( alpha-Al2O3, SrTiO3, and MgO). Neutron diffraction studies show that T(B) does not track the CoO ordering temperature and, hence, that this reduction in T(B) does not arise from finite-size scaling. Instead, the ordering temperature of the CoO layers is enhanced above the bulk T(N) for layer thicknesses approximately less than or equal to 100 A due to the proximity of magnetic Fe3O4 layers.
