Structure of the int-5, a novel MMTV integration genomic locus containing mouse early transposon LTR homology region.

Previous studies have reported the cloning and identification of the int-5, a novel mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) integration locus involved in mammary tumorigenesis. Here we report the characterization of the 5.5 kb region from this novel MMTV integration site. Our results show that the region after the MMTV integration site, a 258 bp sequence is homologous (100%) to the mouse early transposon (mETn) long-terminal repeat and other sequences of the this transposon are not present in the 5.5 kb region. Our results also show for the first time the tumor specific expression of mETn and expression of the region downstream of the MMTV integration site that is homologous to mETn-LTR in D2 mammary tumors.

Detention of British citizens as hostages in the Gulf--health, psychological, and family consequences.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the physical, psychological, and family consequences of the detention of British subjects as hostages in Kuwait or Iraq, or both, after the invasion of Kuwait on 2 August 1990 and to investigate the relation between types of trauma experienced and these reactions. DESIGN: Postal questionnaire. SUBJECTS: 381 respondents. RESULTS: Many health, social, and psychological sequelae were identified. Problems with present finance, accommodation, and work are important causes of distress. Many hostages coped well and gained self esteem. CONCLUSIONS: A minority of respondents require further support and treatment. Expatriates in risk areas should retain assets in their home country.

Heterogeneous elevation of amino acid transport rates in pantothenate-and lipid-deficient Lactobacillus plantarum.

The effect of a pantothenic acid deficiency in Lactobacillus plantarum on the initial rate of amino acid transport was investigated. Although the steady-state accumulation capacity for all amino acids was markedly reduced in pantothenate-deficient cells, initial rates of uptake either were not changed (asparagine, alanine, lysine) or were increased (glutamic acid, aspartic acid leucine). The findings suggest that a reduction in membrane lipid content heterogeneously affects the operation and/or synthesis of amino acid transport catalysts.

Neonatal meningitis caused by Citrobacter koseri.

Three cases of neonatal meningitis, two of which were fatal, occurred in a premature baby unit during a period of one week. A fourth case occurred in the same unit six months later. Citrobacter koseri was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of all four cases. Detailed biochemical and serological examination of the organisms showed that two distinct bioserotypes were involved.

The estimation of two alpha(1) glycoproteins (orosomucoid and another alpha(1) acid glycoprotein) in health and disease.

The normal values for orosomucoid and the alpha(1) acid glycoprotein of Schultze in young adults are reported, specifically estimated by an immunological technique. The use of purified orosomucoid as a standard allowed of absolute estimation of this protein. The alpha(1) acid glycoprotein is estimated relative to a standard normal serum. These proteins were estimated in the serum of eight patients after surgery. Both proteins rise markedly in the serum, the alpha(1) acid glycoprotein reaching peak concentration in two to three days, and falling again equally rapidly, the orosomucoid rising more slowly to reach a peak after four to seven days, and returning to normal values in 10 to 14 days. Estimations of serum levels in 24 patients with a variety of diseases show that the two proteins can vary independently; values as high as eight times normal were found for orosomucoid in Crohn's disease. In patients with proteinuria, orosomucoid is preferentially excreted in the urine. The losses of alpha(1) acid glycoprotein are, however, anomalous, being proportionately less than those of albumin, relative to the serum levels. The significance of these preliminary findings is discussed.
