Synthesis and characterization of new oxidopolysulfidovanadates.

The alkali-metal oxidopolysulfidovanadates Cs(4)[(VO)(2)(eta(2)-S(2))(4)(mu-S(2))] (I), Cs(5)[(VO)(3)(eta(2)-S(2))(6)(mu-S(4))] (II), and K(6)[(VO)(4)(eta(2)-S(2))(8)(mu-S(3))].2CH(3)OH.0.6H(2)O (III) have been synthesized by means of methanothermal methods at 170 degrees C or 175 degrees C. These compounds each contain a V(5+) ion coordinated by an oxo ligand and two eta(2)-S(2)(2-) groups. In I, two such [VO(eta(2)-S(2))(2)](-) units are bridged by an S(2)(2)(-) unit. In II and III, two such [VO(eta(2)-S(2))(2)](-) units are joined by a V-S-V bond to form [(VO(eta(2)-S(2))(2))(2)](2-) units; in II, such a [(VO(eta(2)-S(2))(2))(2)](2-) unit is bridged to a [VO(eta(2)-S(2))(2)](-) unit by an S(4)(2-) group; in III, two such [(VO(eta(2)-S(2))(2))(2)](2-) units are bridged by an S(3)(2-) group. Crystallographic data at T = 153 K (compound, space group, Z, a, b, c, beta): I, P2(1)/n, 2, 7.4366(3), 10.3743(5), 13.1151(6) A, 101.097(1) degrees; II, P2(1)/c, 4, 8.4451(6), 24.5144(18), 14.0995(10) A, 101.325(1) degrees; III, C2/c, 4, 31.037(3), 12.5355(11), 8.7822(8) A, 93.127(2) degrees.

[[Cu(en)(2)](2)Re(4)Te(4)(CN)(12)].5H(2)O and [[Cu(en)(2)](2)Re(6)Te(8)(CN)(6)].5H(2)O: bonding of a transition-metal complex to a rhenium chalcocyanide cluster.

The use of a cyano group of a transition-metal cluster complex to bond to another transition-metal complex has been realized in the syntheses of [[Cu(en)(2)](2)Re(4)Te(4)(CN)(12)].5H(2)O (1) and [[Cu(en)(2)](2)Re(6)Te(8)(CN)(6)].5H(2)O (2), (en = ethylenediamine). These compounds have been synthesized by the reaction of an aqueous solution of K(4)[Re(4)Te(4)(CN)(12)].5H(2)O (for 1) or K(4)[Re(6)Te(8)(CN)(6)] (for 2) with an ammonia solution of Cu(en)(2)Cl(2). In each compound, two Cu(en)(2) groups are bonded to the Re cluster through Cu-N(cyanide) bonds. In compound 1, which contains a tetrahedral cluster core, the Cu(en)(2) groups are necessarily bonded to cis cyano groups; in compound 2, which has an octahedral cluster core, they are bonded to trans cyano groups. Compound 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with four formulas in unit cell of dimensions a = 18.9077(10), b = 15.4841(8), c = 14.4483(8) A, beta = 95.124(1) degrees, and V = 4213.1(4) A(3) (T = 153 K); compound 2 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with one formula in a unit cell of dimensions a = 9.4906(3), b = 10.6529(4), c = 12. 6252(5) A, alpha = 113.599(1) degrees, beta = 103.404(1) degrees, gamma = 92.659(1) degrees, and V = 1123.87(7) A(3) (T = 153 K).

New layered materials: syntheses, structures, and optical and magnetic properties of CsGdZnSe3, CsZrCuSe3, CsUCuSe3, and BaGdCuSe3.

Four new quaternary selenides CsGdZnSe3, CsZrCuSe3, CsUCuSe3, and BaGdCuSe3 have been synthesized with the use of traditional high-temperature solid-state experimental methods. These compounds are isostructural with KZrCuS3, crystallizing with four formula units in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm. Cell constants (A) at 153 K are CsGdZnSe3 4.1684(7), 15.765(3), 11.0089(18); CsZrCuSe3 3.903(2), 15.841(10), 10.215(6); CsUCuSe3 4.1443(7), 15.786(3), 10.7188(18); and BaGdCuSe3 4.1839(6), 13.8935(19), 10.6692(15). The structure of these ALnMSe3 compounds (A = Cs, Ba; Ln = Zr, Gd, U; M = Cu, Zn) is composed of 2 to infinity [LnMSe3(n-)] (n = 1, 2) layers separated by A atoms. The Ln atom is octahedrally coordinated to six Se atoms, the M atom is tetrahedrally coordinated to four Se atoms, and the A atom is coordinated to a bicapped trigonal prism of eight Se atoms. Because there are no Se-Se bonds in the structure, the oxidation state of A is 1+ (Cs) or 2+ (Ba), that of Ln is 3+ (Gd) or 4+ (Zr, U), and that of M is 1+ (Cu) or 2+ (Zn). CsGdZnSe3 and BaGdCuSe3, which are paramagnetic, obey the Curie-Weiss law and have effective magnetic moments of 7.87(6) and 7.85(5) muB for Gd(3+), in good agreement with the theoretical value of 7.94 muB. Optical transitions at 1.88 and 2.92 eV for CsGdZnSe3 and 1.96 eV for BaGdCuSe3 were deduced from diffuse reflectance spectra.

Comparison of conventional and synchrotron X-ray structure determinations of the adduct 1,2,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzene-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (1/1) and a conventional X-ray structure determination of 1,2,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzene monohydrate.

The X-ray structure of 1,2,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzene (benzene-1,2,4,5-tetrol) monohydrate, C6H6O4*H2O, (I), reveals columns of 1,2,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzene parallel to the b axis that are separated by 3.364 (12) and 3.453 (11) A. Molecules in adjacent columns are tilted relative to each other by 27.78 (8) degrees. Water molecules fill the channels between the columns and are involved in hydrogen-bonding interactions with the 1,2,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzene molecules. The crystal structure of the adduct 1,2,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzene-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (1/1), C6H6O4*C6H4O4, (II), reveals alternating molecules of 1,2,4,5-tetrahydroxybenzene and 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (both lying on inversion centers), and a zigzag hydrogen-bonded network connecting molecules in three dimensions. For compound (II), the conventional X-ray determination, (IIa), is in very good agreement with the synchrotron X-ray determination, (IIb). When differences in data collection temperatures are taken into account, even the displacement parameters are in very good agreement.

New layered materials: syntheses, structures, and optical properties of K(2)TiCu(2)S(4), Rb(2)TiCu(2)S(4), Rb(2)TiaAg(2)S(4), Cs(2)TiAg(2)sS(4), and Cs(2)TiCu(2)Se(4).

The new compounds K(2)TiCu(2)S(4), Rb(2)TiCu(2)S(4), Rb(2)TiAg(2)S(4), Cs(2)TiAg(2)S(4), and Cs(2)TiCu(2)Se(4) have been synthesized by the reactions of A(2)Q(3) (A = K, Rb, Cs; Q = S, Se) with Ti, M (M = Cu or Ag), and Q at 823 K. The compounds Rb(2)TiCu(2)S(4), Cs(2)TiAg(2)S(4), and Cs(2)TiCu(2)Se(4) are isostructural. They crystallize with two formula units in space group P4(2)/mcm of the tetragonal system in cells of dimensions a = 5.6046(4) A, c = 13.154(1) A for Rb(2)TiCu(2)S(4), a =6.024(1) A, c = 13.566(4) A for Cs(2)TiAg(2)S(4), and a =5.852(2) A, c =14.234(5) A for Cs(2)TiCu(2)Se(4) at 153 K. Their structure is closely related to that of Cs(2)ZrAg(2)Te(4) and comprises [TiM(2)Q(4)(2)(-)] layers, which are separated by alkali metal atoms. The [TiM(2)Q(4)(2)(-)] layer is anti-fluorite-like with both Ti and M atoms tetrahedrally coordinated to Q atoms. Tetrahedral coordination of Ti(4+) is rare in the solid state. On the basis of unit cell and space group determinations, the compounds K(2)TiCu(2)S(4) and Rb(2)TiAg(2)S(4) are isostructural with the above compounds. The band gaps of K(2)TiCu(2)S(4), Rb(2)TiCu(2)S(4), Rb(2)TiAg(2)S(4), and Cs(2)TiAg(2)S(4) are 2.04, 2.19, 2.33, and 2.44 eV, respectively, as derived from optical measurements. From band-structure calculations, the optical absorption for an A(2)TiM(2)Q(4) compound is assigned to a transition from an M d and Q p valence band (HOMO) to a Ti 3d conduction band.

trans-Bis(hexafluoroantimonato)(phthalocyaninato)copper(II).

The title compound, trans-bis(hexafluoroantimonato-F)(phthalocyaninato-kappa(4)N(29,30,31,32))copper(II), [Cu(SbF(6))(2)(C(32)H(16)N(8))] or Cu(pc)(SbF(6))(2) (pc is phthalocyaninate), comprises a six-coordinate Cu atom, lying on an inversion center, bonded to four N atoms of a phthalocyanine ring and to F atoms of two trans SbF(6)(-) groups. The compound is presumed to consist of a Cu(II) center and a doubly oxidized phthalocyanine ring, by analogy with Cu(pc)(ReO(4))(2).

Gabapentin and gabapentin monohydrate.

Gabapentin [1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexaneacetic acid, C9H17NO2] is a zwitterion in the solid state. Its crystal structure involves extensive hydrogen bonding between the NH3(+) and COO(-) groups of neighboring molecules. The structure of gabapentin monohydrate [1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexaneacetic acid monohydrate, C9H17NO2-H2O] also involves such hydrogen bonding and, in addition, has a hydrogen-bonding network comprising the water molecules and both the NH3(+) and COO(-) groups.

The alkali metal/group 4 metal/polychalcogenides Cs(4)Ti(3)Se(13), Rb(4)Ti(3)S(14), Cs(4)Ti(3)S(14), Rb(4)Hf(3)S(14), Rb(4)Zr(3)Se(14), Cs(4)Zr(3)Se(14), and Cs(4)Hf(3)Se(14) have been synthesized by means of the reactive flux method at 823 or 873 K. Cs(4)Ti(3)Se(13) crystallizes in a new structure type in space group C(2)(2)-P2(1) with eight formula units in a monoclinic cell at T = 153 K of dimensions a = 10.2524(6) A, b = 32.468(2) A, c = 14.6747(8) A, beta = 100.008(1) degrees. Cs(4)Ti(3)Se(13) is composed of four independent one-dimensional [Ti(3)Se(13)(4-)] chains separated by Cs(+) cations. These chains adopt hexagonal closest packing along the [100] direction. The [Ti(3)Se(13)(4-)] chains are built from the face- and edge-sharing of pentagonal pyramids and pentagonal bipyramids. Formal oxidation states cannot be assigned in Cs(4)Ti(3)Se(13). The compounds Rb(4)Ti(3)S(14), Cs(4)Ti(3)S(14), Rb(4)Hf(3)S(14), Rb(4)Zr(3)Se(14), Cs(4)Zr(3)Se(14), and Cs(4)Hf(3)Se(14) crystallize in the K(4)Ti(3)S(14) structure type with four formula units in space group C(2)(h)()(6)-C2/c of the monoclinic system at T = 153 K in cells of dimensions a = 21.085(1) A, b = 8.1169(5) A, c = 13.1992(8) A, beta = 112.835(1) degrees for Rb(4)Ti(3)S(14);a = 21.329(3) A, b = 8.415(1) A, c = 13.678(2) A, beta = 113.801(2) degrees for Cs(4)Ti(3)S(14); a = 21.643(2) A, b = 8.1848(8) A, c = 13.331(1) A, beta = 111.762(2) degrees for Rb(4)Hf(3)S(14); a = 22.605(7) A, b = 8.552(3) A, c = 13.880(4) A, beta = 110.919(9) degrees for Rb(4)Zr(3)Se(14); a = 22.826(5) A, b = 8.841(2) A, c = 14.278(3) A, beta = 111.456(4) degrees for Cs(4)Zr(3)Se(14); and a = 22.758(5) A, b = 8.844(2) A, c = 14.276(3) A, beta = 111.88(3) degrees for Cs(4)Hf(3)Se(14). These A(4)M(3)Q(14) compounds (A = alkali metal; M = group 4 metal; Q = chalcogen) contain hexagonally closest-packed [M(3)Q(14)(4-)] chains that run in the [101] direction and are separated by A(+) cations. Each [M(3)Q(14)(4-)] chain is built from a [M(3)Q(14)] unit that consists of two MQ(7) pentagonal bipyramids or one distorted MQ(8) bicapped octahedron bonded together by edge- or face-sharing. Each [M(3)Q(14)] unit contains six Q(2)(2-) dimers, with Q-Q distances in the normal single-bond range 2.0616(9)-2.095(2) A for S-S and 2.367(1)-2.391(2) A for Se-Se. The A(4)M(3)Q(14) compounds can be formulated as (A(+))(4)(M(4+))(3)(Q(2)(2-))(6)(Q(2-))(2).

Synthesis and characterization of the silver maleonitrilediselenolates and silver maleonitriledithiolates [K([2.2.2]-cryptand)]4[Ag4(Se2C2(CN)2)4], [Na([2.2.2]-cryptand)]4[Ag4(S2C2(CN)2)4].0.33MeCN, [NBu4]4[Ag4(S2C2(CN)2)4], [K([2.2.2]-cryptand)]3[Ag(Se2C2(CN)2)2].2MeCN, and [Na([2.2.2]-cryptand)]3[Ag(S2C2(CN)2)2].

Reaction of AgBF(4), KNH(2), K(2)Se, Se, and [2.2.2]-cryptand in acetonitrile yields [K([2.2.2]-cryptand)](4)[Ag(4)(Se(2)C(2)(CN)(2))(4)] (1). In the unit cell of 1 there are four [K([2.2.2]-cryptand)](+) units and a tetrahedral Ag(4) anionic core coordinated in mu(1)-Se, mu(2)-Se fashion by each of four mns ligands (mns = maleonitrilediselenolate, [Se(2)C(2)(CN)(2)](2)(-)). Reaction of AgNO(3), Na(2)(mnt) (mnt = maleonitriledithiolate, [S(2)C(2)(CN)(2)](2)(-)), and [2.2.2]-cryptand in acetonitrile yields [Na([2.2.2]-cryptand)](4)[Ag(4)(mnt)(4)].0.33MeCN (2). The Ag(4) anion of 2 is analogous to that in 1. Reaction of AgNO(3), Na(2)(mnt), and [NBu(4)]Br in acetonitrile yields [NBu(4)](4)[Ag(4)(mnt)(4)] (3). The anion of 3 also comprises an Ag(4) core coordinated by four mnt ligands, but the Ag(4) core is diamond-shaped rather than tetrahedral. Reaction of [K([2.2.2]-cryptand)](3)[Ag(mns)(Se(6))] with KNH(2) and [2.2.2]-cryptand in acetonitrile yields [K([2.2.2]-cryptand)](3)[Ag(mns)(2)].2MeCN (4). The anion of 4 comprises an Ag center coordinated by two mns ligands in a tetrahedral arrangement. Reaction of AgNO(3), 2 equiv of Na(2)(mnt), and [2.2.2]-cryptand in acetonitrile yields [Na([2.2.2]-cryptand)](3)[Ag(mnt)(2)] (5). The anion of 5 is analogous to that of 4. Electronic absorption and infrared spectra of each complex show behavior characteristic of metal-maleonitriledichalcogenates. Crystal data (153 K): 1, P2/n, Z = 2, a = 18.362(2) A, b = 16.500(1) A, c = 19.673(2) A, beta = 94.67(1) degrees, V = 5941(1) A(3); 2, P4, Z = 4, a= 27.039(4) A, c = 15.358(3) A, V = 11229(3) A(3); 3, P2(1)/c, Z = 6, a = 15.689(3) A, b = 51.924(11) A, c = 17.393(4) A, beta = 93.51(1) degrees, V = 14142(5) A(3); 4, P2(1)/c, Z = 4, a = 13.997(1) A, b = 21.866(2) A, c = 28.281(2) A, beta = 97.72(1) degrees, V = 8578(1) A(3); 5, P2/n, Z = 2, a = 11.547(2) A, b = 11.766(2) A, c = 27.774(6) A, beta = 91.85(3) degrees, V = 3772(1) A(3).

Syntheses and characterization of the metal maleonitrilediselenolates [K([2.2.2]-cryptand)]2[M(Se2C2(CN)2)2] (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) and [Ni(dmf)(5)Cl]2[Ni(Se2C2(CN)2)2].

Reaction of KNH(2), K(2)Se, Se, [2.2.2]-cryptand, and a metal source yields the metal bis(maleonitrilediselenolates) [K([2.2.2]-cryptand)](2)[M(Se(2)C(2)(CN)(2))(2)] (M = Ni, 1; Pd, 2, Pt, 3). These compounds are isostructural and crystallize with four formula units in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c in cells at T = 153 K with parameters (a (A), b (A), c (A), beta (deg), V (A(3))) of 12.220(1), 15.860(2), 15.306(1), 107.64(2), 2827(1) for 1; 12.291(1), 15.669(1), 15.548(1), 108.55(1), 2839(1) for 2; and 12.292(3), 15.671(3), 15.569(3), 108.59(3), 2842(1) for 3. The cation of 1 has been substituted to yield [Ni(dmf)(5)Cl](2)[Ni(Se(2)C(2)(CN)(2))(2)] (4). [Ni(dmf)(5)Cl](2)[Ni(Se(2)C(2)(CN)(2))(2)] (4) crystallizes with one molecule in the triclinic space group P1 in a cell with parameters (T = 153 K) of a = 8.842(2) A, b =13.161(3) A, c = 13.831(3) A, alpha = 110.08(3) degrees, beta = 95.23(3) degrees, gamma = 93.72(3) degrees, V = 1484(1) A(3). The electronic absorption and infrared spectra are characteristic of metal maleonitrilediselenolates. Cyclic voltammetry shows that the maleonitrilediselenolate (mns) complexes are more easily oxidized than their maleonitriledithiolate (mnt) analogues.

Compounds 2 and 3 have crystallographically imposed 2-fold axes. In 2 and 3, which represent R-state (relaxed) and T-state (tense) models, respectively, for hemoglobin, the NO2 ligand is bound on the "picket" side to the Co atom, and either 1-MeIm (for 2) or 1,2-Me2Im (for 3) is bound to the Co atom at the sixth coordination site on the sterically unhindered side of the molecule. The average deviations of atoms from the 24-atom porphyrin core are 0.031, 0.129, and 0.117 A for 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The Co atom is -0.043(1) A out of the mean 24-atom porphyrin plane toward the 1-MeIm ligand in 2 and -0.089(1) A out of the plane toward the 1,2-Me2Im ligand in 3. The bonds of both axial ligands in the R-state model 2, 1.898(4) A for Co-N(O2) and 1.995(4) A for Co-N(base), are shorter than the corresponding bonds in the T-state model 3, 1.917(4) A for Co-N(O2) and 2.091(4) A for Co-N(base).

LaAsTe (a = 7.8354(11) A, b = 4.1721(6) A, c = 10.2985(14) A, T = 153 K), PrAsTe (a = 7.728(2) A, b = 4.1200(11) A, c = 10.137(3) A, T = 153 K), SmAsTe (a = 7.6180(16) A, b = 4.0821(9) A, c = 9.991(2) A, T = 153 K), GdAsTe (a = 7.5611(15) A, b = 4.0510(8) A, c = 9.920(2) A, T = 153 K), DyAsTe (a = 7.4951(13) A, b = 4.0246(7) A, c = 9.8288(17) A, T = 153 K), and ErAsTe (a = 7.4478(1) A, b = 4.0078(1) A, c = 9.7552(2) A, T = 153 K) crystallize with four formula units in the orthorhombic space group D2h16-Pnma. These compounds are isostructural and belong to the beta-ZrSb2 structure type. In each compound, the Ln atoms are coordinated by a tricapped trigonal prism of four As atoms and five Te atoms. The entire three-dimensional structure is built up by the motif of the LnAs4Te5 tricapped trigonal prisms. Infinite nonalternating zigzag As chains are found along the b axis, with As-As distances in these compounds ranging from 2.5915(5) to 2.6350(9) A. Conductivity measurements in the direction of these As chains indicate that PrAsTe is metallic whereas SmAsTe and DyAsTe are weakly metallic. Antiferromagnetic transitions occur in SmAsTe and DyAsTe at 3 and 9 K, respectively. DyAsTe above 9 K follows the Curie-Weiss law.
