Electrocution injuries. A case report.

A case study of a high-voltage injury was presented. The short period that the patient was in contact with the electrical source prevented further systemic injury and may have saved her life. The patient's present neuritis is indicative of long-term sequelae of electrocution injury, in which ischemic necrosis of the surrounding nerves can occur near or at the site of the exit wound.

Silastic sphere arthroereisis for surgical treatment of flexible flatfoot: a preliminary report.

Numerous procedure have been proposed for the treatment of flexible flatfoot. Many procedures use bone blocks and bond grafts placed into the sinus tarsi to limit subtalar joint motion. Arthroereisis is the limitation of exogenous joint motion without complete arthrodesis. This has been performed by utilizing a variety of endoprosthetic devices. Some require suture or bone cement for placement. Such techniques may add to the complications and limitations of these procedures. When indicated, the implantation of a Silastic 3 sphere into the sinus tarsi appears to be a promising alternative. The procedure is uncomplicated and does not require an osteotomy, grafting, cement, or internal or external fixation. Joint integrity is maintained without violation of the talocalcaneal articular facets. Properly performed, the Silastic sphere is self contained and retained with minimal potential of subluxation. The sphere also functions with a "ball-bearing" action, thereby reducing the abrupt torsional forces of impaction while limiting excessive pronation.

The metatarsal osteotomy: a 10-year follow-up on the second, third and fourth metatarsal osteotomies and a new approach to the fifth metatarsal osteotomy.

The metatarsal osteotomy, a relatively simple procedure, provides a great amount of correction and relief with a limited amount of bone resection. Postoperative pain and edema are minimal, and disability and loss of time from employment are eliminated as patients are able to walk immediately in a surgical shoe. If biomechanical management is not adequate in relieving discomfort, then a 10-year study of more than 1000 cases indicates that the osteotomy is the procedure of choice.

Subtalar joint arthroereisis with SILASTIC silicone sphere: a retrospective study.

Many authors have discussed the various surgical techniques of subtalar joint arthroereisis in the treatment of flexible flatfoot. Some authors advocate the use of bone grafts in the sinus tarsi to limit excessive subtalar joint pronation, while others advocate the use of endoprosthetic devices. These authors will present a retrospective study of subtalar joint arthroereisis utilizing a SILASTIC silicone sphere technique devised by the senior authors.

Surgical correction of tailor's bunion with resection of fifth metatarsal head and silastic sphere implant: an 8-year follow-up study.

This paper introduces a fifth metatarsal head surgery with silicone sphere implant to correct tailor's bunion deformities and prevent digital retraction that may occur after fifth metatarsal head resection. The authors present an 8-year follow-up of 35 patients who underwent 50 procedures. The authors had an 84% success rate, but they submit that this procedure is not indicated in every case of tailor's bunion.
