[Correlations between the ABO blood group system and tendon rupture].

53 per cent of the 873 cases of subcutaneous (spontaneous) tendon ruptures, treated in the National Institute of Traumatology belonged to the blood group O, and that was significantly higher than in the healthy population (31.1 per cent) of Hungary. The ratio of the tendon rupture patients belonging to the blood group A was significantly lower (27.1 per cent) than in the population (42,4 per cent). The ratio of the cases belonging to the blood group O among the multiple tendon rupture and rerupture patients proved to be over 70 per cent. On the basis of their data authors think that there is a relation between the ABO blood group system and the tendon rupture: those belonging to the blood group O are more endangered by, those belonging to the blood group A are more protected against tendon rupture. No relation was found between the Rh(D) blood group system and the tendon rupture.

Alterations in dry mass content of collagen fibers in degenerative tendinopathy and tendon-rupture.

The dry mass concentration and collagen fiber morphology of intact, as well as of degenerated and ruptured human Achilles, biceps brachii, extensor pollicis longus and quadriceps tendons, were determined by using the interference microscopical technique. The variation in the collagen fiber thickness was demonstrated in different intact tendons, the fibers being largest in the Achilles and smallest in the extensor pollicis longus tendons. However, the intact tendons exhibited only thick collagen fibers. In the degenerative tendinopathies an increase of the dry mass content was observed, being especially marked in calcifying tendinopathy. In the degenerated tendons the average collagen fiber diameter had decreased, and two clearly distinct populations of thick and thin fibers were observed. The dry mass content of the thick fibers was significantly greater than that of the thin fibers. The present results demonstrate striking changes in the collagen and its dry mass content in degenerative tendinopathy, thus also increasing the susceptibility to ruptures.

Analysis of skeletal muscle capillarization: methodological problems.

Capillarization of skeletal muscle has been studied on the same muscle with different methods. Capillary/muscle fibre ratio, number of muscle fibres in contact with capillaries, capillary density in a unit area, capillary density on the muscle fibre surface were determined. The various methods gave different numerical data. Determination of capillary/muscle fibre ratio seemed to be the most reliable index of the changes in pathological conditions.

The pathogenesis of tendolipomatosis; an electron microscopical study.

The development of tendolipomatosis has been studied both by light and scanning electron microscopy in the tendons of healthy persons killed in accidents. Lipid cells are rarely seen in the intact tendon. In the early stages of tendolipomatosis lipid cells are found deep and singly but in the later phases lipocytes are seen to disrupt the continuity of collagen fibres and tendon bundles and so reduce the strength of the tendon.

Polarization and electron microscopic studies on the collagen of intact and ruptured human tendons.

The intact and degenerated tendons were studied by the Picrosirius polarization microscopic method and by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. In the intact tendon, type I collagen were found as sole component. In the degenerated tendon, the collagen revealed histochemical and ultrastructural aspects with are typical of collagen type III. The formation of type III collagen must be an integral part of the disease process.

Muscle capillaries in tenotomized human muscles.

The capillaries were studied in tenotonized human muscles after tenotomy or spontaneous rupture of the tendon. The mean capillary area was not significantly different in the patients with tenotomy, or with spontaneous rupture of the tendon, as compared to intact muscles. The mean basement membrane area as a percentage of total capillary area was significantly larger and the size capillary lumen significantly smaller in the injured than in the intact muscles. The alterations of the capillaries were time-dependent.

[Orthopedic and trauma aspects of congenital myopathies (author's transl)].

A review on the orthopedic and trauma aspects of the muscular dystrophies and the non-progressive myopathies is given on the basis of personal experience and the relevant literature. Pathomechanism, incidence, treatment modalities of spinal deformities, joint malformations, contractures and systemic bone abnormalities are reviewed too. Spontaneous tendon ruptures are thought to be the complications of non-progressive myopathies.

Histochemical and ultrastructural study of adult human tendon.

The authors have studied the enzymhistochemical and ultrastructural pictures of tenocytes of adult human tendons. High succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase, TPN-diaphorase, lactate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity were found, as indicated both oxidativ, anaerobic and pentose-phosphate shung activity. Phosphorylase and glutamate dehydrogenase activity was medial, lipase and alcaline phosphatase activity was slight. In tenocytes well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and GOLGI apparatus, large amount of free ribosomes were found.

Histochemical and ultrastructural study of human muscles after spontaneous rupture of the tendon.

The authors studied the histochemical and ultrastructural alterations of human muscles after spontaneous rupture of the tendon. Both succinate dehydrogenase (in type 1 fibres), and ATPase (in type 2 fibres) activity decreased in all injured muscles. In the intact antagonists and in contralateral muscles alterations were not found. The creatine phosphokinase and aldolase activity were decreased also in the injured muscles. The lactate dehydrogenase activity was various both in affected and in unaffected antagonists muscles. 2 weeks or more after the rupture of the tendon, in the injured muscles the number of type 1 fibres were decreased and therefore a statistically significant type 2 fibre predominance occurred. Ultrastructurally the disruption and disorientation of the myofibrils, streaming and disorganisation of Z line were found. The sarcolemma was arranged, the sarcoplasmic reticulum was dilated; both normal, pycnotic and enlarged mitochondria were observed. The motor end-plates were not discernible.
