Users of coin-operated computerized sphygmomanometry and reasons for utilization: a descriptive study.

A sample of 209 users of coin-operated computerized sphygmomanometers were interviewed during randomly selected hours. Follow-up phone contact was made to determine if any health care action was taken as a result of the blood pressure reading. Results suggest that when used in conjunction with the guidance of a physician or nurse, coin-operated computerized blood pressure machines may help individuals be active participants in the control of high blood pressures.

Health promotion in acute care settings.

Promoting health in a hospital setting is a realistic goal for the acute-care nurse. Nursing strategies such as lifestyle assessment, health teaching, and effective communication can be used to make decisions about health practices. Nurses should be alert to lifestyle-induced diseases and risk factors that precede these diseases. Hospitals have an important role in providing individuals with health information. Nurses can play integral parts in helping the hospitalized patients achieve better health by incorporating health promotion strategies in everyday clinical practice.

An unusual complication of bypassed popliteal aneurysms.

The most common treatment of popliteal aneurysms is bypass and in situ ligation of the aneurysm. Two patients treated in this manner continued to have enlargement of their aneurysms, with symptomatic vein and nerve compression in the popliteal space. The aneurysms persisted because of failure to ligate arterial branches arising from the aneurysm itself. These recurrences were treated successfully by ligating the branches from within the aneurysm and obliterating the aneurysmal sac.
