Report of a national survey of school nurse supervisors.

This is the first national survey of school nurse supervisors which obtained data on local school health programs. The results indicate the status of school health programming nearly a decade ago and may reflect the direction of the 1990s.

The school nurse practitioner: providing improved health care to children.

School nurse practitioners have the competence to participate in providing a broad range of direct primary health care and services to the school-age child. Greater utilization of these specially prepared and highly qualified nurse practitioners as providers of health care in the school is a practical and effective method of adding to the quality, availability, and continuity of health care for the school-age child.

The school nurse practitioner.

Whatever the specific details of their practices, SNPs have shown themselves able to function effectively in their expanded roles because they have assumed more responsibility, initiative, interdependence, and independence in caring for children. Specifically, they have learned to be confident of their decision-making abilities, to adapt themselves to an expanded framework of nursing, and to regard themselves as highly qualified professionals. What this means to the individual nurse practitioner, the parent and--most important--the child is well summed up in these remarks from Larea Younkman, SNP in the Denver Public Schools: "Previously," she writes, "my recommendations to the parents as to what to do and when, such as seeking medical attention, were frequently too general and consequently not heeded by the parent. Now when I talk to a parent, I am not only confident of my findings but I'm also much more convinced that what I suggest is necessary. As a result, parents are looking at SNPs differently, trusting our judgment, and, I think, following through on the advice we offer to a greater extent than previously." Thus the SNP could well be the vital bridge between this country's traditional system of health care delivery and those children who are deprived of the care they need through reluctance, ignorance, parental apathy, or lack of available health care facilities.

Health promotion and disease prevention: secrets of success.

Successful health promotion programs impart knowledge, influence attitudes, and change behaviors. Essential program components are: needs assessment, organization, coalition-building, marketing, and location. Early intervention, family and peer involvement, individual attention, mentoring, repetition, and after-care are secrets of effective health promotion disease prevention programs.

Achieving fully immunized status in the nation's pediatric population remains an elusive goal. A new campaign is underway to improve immunization coverage, and the nation's schools are logical sites to implement these projects.

An update on student health fairs.

With a nationwide prevention campaign underway in the United States, the traditional student health fair has taken on additional credibility and relevance, and careful planning should be undertaken when conducting these fairs. An overview of a successful Denver, Colorado student health fair is outlined in this article.

Health behavior surveys for youth.

In recent years, many health-related risk behavior surveys have been developed for youth. Three of these inventories - the Wellness Check Teen Health Risk Appraisal, the Adolescent Health Survey, and the Youth Risk Behavior Survey - are used widely, and pediatric nurses need to be familiar with them to enhance health promotion activities.

In a country where many U.S. children live in poverty, do not share equally in health and access to health care, and are at risk for several adolescent problems, health promotion has become the new frontier in health care. The newer approaches to health promotion are discussed.
