The influence of dexamethasone on the isozyme patterns of ATP-hexose phosphotransferases, aldolase and pyruvate kinase of adult rat hepatocytes maintained in primary cultures has been studied. A progressive loss of the typical adult liver isozymes glucokinase, pyruvate kinase L and aldolase B, with a simultaneous increase of both pyruvate kinase A and hexokinase activities, was observed in hepatocytes cultured in the absence of added glucocorticoid. When the culture medium was supplemented with 10(-7)M dexamethasone, the adult liver patterns of pyruvate kinase and aldolase were preserved for at least seven days of culture, the initial level of glucokinase was maintained for three days, and the rise of hexokinase activity was delayed and partially blocked. These results are discussed in relation to the known beneficial effect of glucocorticoids on the survival of cultured hepatocytes.

Primary cultures of adult rat liver parenchymal cells showed a progressive rise of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) activity (E.C. 2.3.2.2) after the first 5 days of culture. The presence of dexamethasone and other synthetic glucocorticoids in the culture medium partially prevented this increase.
This study was designed to determine the degree to which the systematic distortions in the pressure curve due to recording and filtering systems influence the relaxation indices. The purposes are 1) to analyze the dependency on the high frequencies of the relaxation and contractility parameters, 2) to determine the degree to which the catheter recordings modify those parameters, and 3) to test the monoexponential hypothesis in which the T index is based (Weiss, Frederiksen, and Weisfeldt, J. Clin. Invest. 58: 751-760, 1976). In 17 open-chest dogs, the left ventricular pressure (LVP) was recorded in four different ways: 1) with a large-bored metal cannula, 2) with a catheter-tip manometer, 3) with a Cournand catheter, and 4) with a pigtail catheter. The ECG and LVP were digitized by a computer. A Fourier analysis was performed, and the LVP waves were resynthesized with different numbers of harmonics. We conclude that 1) the catheter recordings are not recommended to calculate relaxation indices, 2) relaxation parameters present more sources of errors than contractility parameters, 3) the monoexponential hypothesis of T is fulfilled if the isovolumic relaxation is considered to end at the time the LVP is 10 mmHg more than left ventricular end-diastolic pressure level, 4) the dependency on higher harmonics of T index and +dP/dtmax is similar, and 5) -dP/dtmax is much more high-frequency dependent than T index.

Selective angiography is the technic which provides a higher accuracy in diagnosing an acute mesenteric arterial insufficiency. If carried out at an early stage it surpasses any other technic. It permits not only obtaining topographic data to locate the occlusion but also the detection of aspects of the collateral circulation in the loops of the bowel, thus enabling us to determine the therapeutic procedure to follow. We have done selective angiography of the superior mesenteric artery in nine patients in all of whom we identified the embolic disease. In five of these patients the embolus was in the main trunk and in four it was in the distal branches. The mortality rate varied depending on the site of the embolus and the time elapsed in the process. In three of the patients with distal localization and in one with trunk localization and sufficient arterial permeation, a conservative therapy was used with good results in all of them.
