[Psychology of urinary incontinence. I. Comparison of women with urgent and stress incontinence before initiation of therapy].

OBJECTIVE OF STUDY: Comparison of psychological characteristics of untreated female patients with urgent and stress urinary incontinence. DESIGN: First stage of a perspective comparative study. SETTING: Gynaecological and Obstetric Department of the Municipal Hospital Neratovice, Urogynaecological out-patient dept. of the Institute for Mother and Child in Prague-Podolí, the Urogynaecological out-patient dept. of the Gynaecological and Obstetric Clinic of the First Medical Faculty Charles University and General Faculty Hospital Prague. METHODS: The study compares a group of 54 patients with stress incontinence and a group of 16 patients with urgent incontinence. Before the onset of therapy the patients were examined by a series of psychodiagnostic tests: MMPI/100 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, abridged version), STAI (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), SCL-90 (Symptom Check List), Lüscher's colour test, guided interview. For statistical evaluation the sign test and t-test were used. RESULTS: In the MMPI/100 and SCL-90 questionnaires a significant difference was found, i.e. a greater psychopathology in women with urgent incontinence (in both instances p < 0.01). The two groups did not differ in any single scale. STAI and the interview did not reveal any significant differences with the exception of greater importance of sexual contact in women with urgent incontinence (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In the group of women with urgent incontinence a higher non-specific psychopathology was proved as compared with women with stress incontinence.

Bacterial dynamics in the sub-surface constructed wetland.

Constructed wetlands have been shown to be capable of removing a wide variety of contaminants, including bacterial pollution. However, only limited information exists on the distribution of bacteria on roots of macrophytes growing in constructed wetlands. Constructed wetland with sub-surface horizontal flow at Nucice near Prague, Czech Republic, was put in operation in 1996. The system treats municipal sewage from 650 PE and the total area of the beds, planted with Phalaris arundinacea and Phragmites australis in alternate stripes perpendicular to the flow direction, is 3,224 m2 (2 beds 62 x 26 m each). Pea gravel (8/16 mm) was used as a filtration material. During the period 1998-1999, distribution of total aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, coliform bacteria and fecal streptococci was monitored in wastewater as well as on roots of both macrophyte species. Counts of bacteria on root surface in the system at Nucice indicate that there is a steep decrease in bacterial numbers within the first few metres of the bed and that there is significantly more bacteria on roots of Phragmites as compared to Phalaris. There was no statistically significant influence of the season on the bacterial counts on roots of macrophytes.

Different effects of bacterial lipopolysaccharide on neonatal immunological tolerance to HSA in rabbits and chickens.

Addition of bacterial lipopolysaccharide to HSA during repeated immunization of rabbits neonatally rendered tolerant to HSA led to anti-HSA antibody formation in 4 out of 5 animals. In all 6 tolerant animals immunized with HSA alone tolerance persisted after cessation of the immunization series, as shown by non-immune elimination of 125I-HSA. On the other hand, immunization with HSA together with different doses of LPS did not increase anti-HSA antibody levels in tolerant and control chickens.
