Anticalculus efficacy of three dentifrices.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the anticalculus effect of three commercial dentifrices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 12-week independent and double-blind clinical study was conducted on a population of calculus-forming adult male and female subjects in Budapest, Hungary to directly compare the anticalculus efficacy of three commercially-available dentifrices, as compared to a placebo dentifrice. The three commercially-available anticalculus dentifrices compared in this clinical study to a 0.243% sodium fluoride/silica placebo dentifrice were as follows: (1) A dentifrice containing 1.3% soluble pyrophosphate and 1.5% of a PVM/MA copolymer in a 0.243% sodium fluoride/silica base. (2) A dentifrice containing 0.3% triclosan and 2% of a PVM/MA copolymer in a 0.243% sodium fluoride/silica base. (3) A dentifrice containing 0.3% triclosan and 0.75% zinc citrate in a 1.14% sodium monofluorophosphate/silica base. RESULTS: All three anticalculus dentifrices provided statistically significant reductions in supragingival calculus formation, as compared to a placebo dentifrice, after 12 weeks of use. The reductions in supragingival calculus formation ranged from 39% to 55%, as compared to a placebo dentifrice, for the three commercially-available anticalculus dentifrices. There was no statistically significant difference among the three commercially-available dentifrices with regard to anticalculus efficacy.

Studies on the incorporation of lanthanides in dental hard tissues.

Rare earth elements (lanthanides)--known from chrystal-chemistry for the rehardening effect on apatites--have been tested previously for the possibility of their incorporation in dental enamel. From the non-toxic lanthanides cerium was incorporated under in vitro conditions in human dental enamel. In the present study, the incorporation of lanthanum (La), europium (Eu), samarium (Sa), ytterbium (Yb) and neodymium (Nd) in human permanent enamel, dentine and deciduous enamel has been investigated by neutron activation analysis. The lanthanides were incorporated--following the above sequence--in an increasing ratio into enamel and dentine, by forming new, more resistant rare earth elements containing apatite structures.

[Diet and plaque].

In summary, many sugar substitutes have a direct effect on dental plaque formation and, therefore, also an indirect effect on hard tooth substance. Short-and long-term clinical studies have shown that xylitol reduces dental plaque. Short-term clinical tests have also demonstrated that sorbitol reduces plaque formation, probably due to retardation of acid formation. With time, this effect, however, diminishes due to adaptation of the microorganisms. Streptococcus mutans count and acid formation in dental plaque are favourably influenced by sugar substitutes, especially by the consumption of xylitol. The effect of sugar substitutes on dental plaque plays an important role for the anticariogenic and caries-reducing mode of action. The development of both caries and periodontal diseases can be favourably influenced by reduced plaque formation.

Dark cells in human oral leukoplakias.

Dark basal keratinocytes, characterized by a strong affinity for basic dyes and by electron density of cytoplasm and nucleus, could be recognized in eleven oral leukoplakias. The percentage of dark cells was higher in the group comprising leukoplakias verrucosa, and erosiva (28% of the basal cells) than in the leukoplakia simplex group (10%). The presence of these cells is a good indicator of the degree of histological dysplasia and correlates well with the preneoplastic potential of these lesions.

[Mophometric study of the mouth mucosa in leukoplakia simplex].

Examination of the leukoplakia simplex of the oral cavity localized on the buccal surface and in the bottom of the oral cavity was carried out in 11 cases using the method of stereological morphometry. It was established that: 1. Quantitative changes of the constituents of the cytoplasma coming into being during the process of the keratinization appear to be similar in both forms of the lokalization investigated; 2. these changes seem to be opposite to the process observed during the differentiation of the normal epithelium; 3. by comparing stereological, histopathological and clinical data a new form of leukoplakia simplex can be distinguished i.e. the indirect form of the metaplasia of the squamous epithelium. 4 Method of the stereological morphometry seesm to be suitable for the description of characteristic features of the keratinization.
