Strain relief in Cu-Pd heteroepitaxy.

We present experimental and theoretical studies of Pd/Cu(100) and Cu/Pd(100) heterostructures in order to explore their structure and misfit strain relaxation. Ultrathin Pd and Cu films are grown by pulsed laser deposition at room temperature. For Pd/Cu, compressive strain is released by networks of misfit dislocations running in the [100] and [010] directions, which appear after a few monolayers (ML) already. In striking contrast, for Cu/Pd the tensile overlayer remains coherent up to about 9 ML, after which multilayer growth occurs. The strong asymmetry between tensile and compressive cases is in contradiction with continuum elasticity theory and is also evident in the structural parameters of the strained films. Molecular dynamics calculations based on classical many-body potentials confirm the pronounced tensile-compressive asymmetry and are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Spin-density wave in ultrathin Fe films on Cu(100).

For Fe films epitaxially grown on Cu(100) at 300 K, the total magnetic moment as a function of film thickness and its temperature dependence have been investigated in situ with a multitechnique approach. The results exclude the collinear type-1 antiferromagnetic configuration as the magnetic structure for face-centered-cubic Fe films on Cu(100). It is proposed that a spin-density-wave state is responsible for the magnetic structure.

Colonoscope length and procedure efficiency.

We reviewed 195 colonoscopies to determine whether procedure efficiency differed with the use of an intermediate-length (135 cm) colonoscope compared with a long (165 cm) colonoscope. The cecum was intubated with the 135-cm scope in 92.6% of procedures and with the 165-cm colonoscope in 96.8% of procedures (chi 2 method, p = 0.26). The mean procedure duration was 36.7 min for 107 complete procedures performed with the 135-cm colonoscope and 48.4 min for 55 examinations using the 165-cm colonoscope (t test, p < 0.001). Colonoscopy with the 135-cm instrument required mean meperidine and midazolam doses of 59.9 mg and 1.8 mg, respectively, compared with doses of 69.1 mg and 2.0 mg, respectively, with the 165-cm colonoscope. The differences were not significant. Although the cecal intubation rate is slightly less for the 135-cm colonoscope, insertion takes significantly less time and is probably more comfortable for the patient than with the 165-cm colonoscope.

Advantages of sphincterotomy and nasobiliary tube drainage in the treatment of cystic duct stump leak complicating laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

We have used sphincterotomy and nasobiliary tube drainage in preference to other forms of endoscopic therapy to manage three cases of cystic duct stump leak complicating laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The ability to monitor daily nasobiliary tube output and to perform repeat cholangiograms without subjecting the patients to multiple endoscopies permitted precise determination of cystic duct stump leak closure and timely discharge. We observed that an approximate doubling of the 24-h nasobiliary tube output coincided with closure of the cystic duct stump leak at cholangiography. Bile ascites was present in two of the cases and was conveniently removed by CT-guided placement of peritoneal drains. All cystic duct stump leaks sealed after 5 days of nasobiliary tube drainage. The advantages of sphincterotomy and nasobiliary tube drainage include precise determination of cystic duct leak closure, final device removal without follow-up endoscopy, and ongoing decompression of the biliary tree after removal of the nasobiliary tube.

ELDAR, a knowledge base system on microcomputer for electrolyte solutions. The factual knowledge of ELDAR.

The knowledge base system ELDAR (ELectrolyte DAta Regensburg), consisting of data base, method base, rule base, and communication manager, classifies the knowledge of electrolyte solutions into factual, algorithmic, and rule knowledge. In this paper information is given on the factual knowledge of ELDAR and the mapping of facts in Codd's relational data model with an extension of its "1st Normal Form" to repeating attributes. ELDAR offers equal user interfaces for all factual knowledge services, such as literature, data, thesaurus, module, parameter, basic data, and rule retrieval.

[Physiological and psychological specifics of the stomatological care in patients suffering from connatal troubles of the haemodynamics].

Four groups of patients are subdivided related to the degree of severity of the trouble of haemodynamics. Main reasons for the decreased loadability are the lack in oxygen in the capillary range, increased infections of the respiratory systems and an altered situation of defense. The multitude of patients of the groups I and II can be treated in child's stomatology. The endangering of the patient acc. to its loadability, the application of local anaesthetics without supplement of means affecting the circulation and a protection by antibiotics with all the surgical interventions are prerequisites.

Consecutive infected aneurysms caused by salmonella.

Treatment of infected aneurysms consists of operation, which depends on the location and pathologic type, and antibiotic therapy, before and at least six weeks following operation. The authors present a case of two consecutive aneurysms occurring in a patient with Salmonella infection. Full recovery was obtained after surgical excision of the aneurysms, prolonged antibiotic therapy, and cholecystectomy.

Permeability of the external glial limiting membrane of rat parietal cortex.

As the relevance of previous reports demonstrating the permeability of the glia limitans appears to be not generally accepted, the problem is reinvestigated by examination of the ultrastructure of the glia limitans in combination with tracer studies using Ruthenium Red. The results clearly show that gap junctions are the only type of intercellular contact present in this layer. Measurements of the lengths of cross-sections of junctional regions reveal a decrease in size in absolute terms as well as in relation to total astrocytic surface if one proceeds from the more superficial layers into the depth of the tissue. The intercellular clefts leading from the subarachnoidal space into the interspaces of brain tissue are patent thus allowing the tracer to penetrate to a depth of 0.4-0.6 mm in one hour. Although these observations confirm the idea of an ultimate communication between the cerebrospinal fluid compartments and the extracellular space of brain the discussion shows how the particular arrangement of the intercellular channels and the cells bordering them may be suited to control the local composition of interstitial fluid independently from that of the cerebrospinal fluid.

Aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta in a young woman.

The diagnosis of a thoracic aortic aneurysm in an otherwise healthy young woman is a very rare occurrence. The Authors report the case of a woman aged twenty-two in whom such an aneurysm was discovered the day after delivery. Physical signs and radiological documents are presented and early surgical treatment is described. The Authors made a survey of the world literature and emphasize the abnormally high incidence of aneurysms in women of child-bearing age. Etiopathological factors are detailed.

[The application of informatics to mercury gauge plethysmography].

In this study, the authors present a computerized mercury-gauge plethysmography device. The electrical signals collected by the plethysmograph are sent to the computer where they are analyzed by a specially devised interpretation program. The graphs are flashed on the screen, the parameters are automatically and instantly calculated, and a printed-out medical report may be obtained at the end of the test. The various characteristics of the material and the program are presented.

[Effect of "anti-thrombosis" stockings on the venous hemodynamics of the lower extremities. Study using mercury gauge plethysmography].

Study by plethysmography with mercury gauge. The authors have analyzed the effects of "anti-thrombosis" stockings on venous hemodynamics of 18 lower extremities, by plethysmography with mercury gauge (Periflow J.S.I.). With this method, they delineate the limits of efficacy of the use of only elastic stockings as prophylactic treatment of the thrombo-embolic disease in immobilized patients.
