Local adaptations of two naturally occurring neuronal conductances, gK + (A) and gK + (Ca), allow for associative conditioning and contiguity judgements in artificial neural networks.

Features of two potassium conductances implicated in the acquisition of conditioned reflexes, the slow calcium dependent conductance (gK + (Ca] and the fast transient conductance (gK + (A], were incorporated into a 6 x 6 element artificial neural network. Adaptive algorithms derived from observations of cortical neurons during associative learning changed gK + (A) in proportion to the product of this current and an EPSP-induced second messenger concentration, and changed gK + (Ca) as a function of a spike-induced second messenger concentration. This network concurrently acquired two distinct representations in response to presentation of stimuli: one resembled associative conditioning (defined in terms of its sensitivity to forward pairing vs. simultaneous or backward pairing); the other reflected contiguous pairings of stimuli. The acquisition of one representation did not markedly interfere with acquisition of the other. This network may accordingly serve as an example of a self-organizing system which minimizes the postulated inherent cross talk between functionally dissiminar representations (Minsky and Papert 1988).

Gastrin and somatostatin levels in patients with gastric cancer.

Gastrin and somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) levels were studied by means of radioimmunoassay in peripheral venous blood of healthy volunteers and patients suffering from gastric adenocarcinoma or duodenal and gastric ulcers. Gastrin and SLI levels were also evaluated in patients in blood drawn from gastric veins during surgery. The elevations of gastrin and SLI levels were found in patients with gastric cancer as compared with healthy people and patients suffering from ulcers. The impairment of the negative feedback between gastrin and somatostatin secretions in patients with gastric cancer was suggested.

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease on the Faroe Islands 1964-83. A retrospective epidemiological survey.

The frequency of inflammatory bowel disease in the Faroe Islands was estimated retrospectively for the years 1964 to 1983. A pronounced increase in the incidence of ulcerative colitis from 2.1 to 12.8 per 100,000 was found. The mean incidence in the period was 7.5/100,000; the prevalence was 157.3/100,000 on 31 December 1983. The change in frequency of Crohn's disease was insignificant, and the incidence of the disease was low compared with in other countries (1.75/100,000); the prevalence was 31.8/100,000 on 31 December 1983. The increase in incidence rate of ulcerative colitis was distributed equally between the two sexes, and a pronounced increment was found among young women.
