Actinomycotic infections of the central nervous system. Two case reports.

Two cases of CNS infections caused by Actinomyces israelii one a fatal case of brain abscess and the other a case of subdural empyema with complete recovery, are reported. One of the patients suffered from a congenital ventricular septal defect, and in both patients a pulmonary focus was found. When slow-growing bacteria such as Actinomyces may be suspected, it is important to cultivate anaerobically for at least five days.

Endogenous alcohol production by intestinal fermentation in sudden infant death.

In some cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) the intestinal flora was found to be dominated by Candida albicans. Microbiologic investigations of the various organs showed the occasional presence of different Candida species, but not in the form of massive growth as in sepsis. There is no basis to assume that the activity of yeasts, first of all of Candida albicans, is a contributory factor in the occurrence of SIDS. Candida albicans was shown to produce alcohol from glucose at a rate of maximally 1 mg of alcohol per gram of intestinal content per hour. It is concluded that the intestinal production of alcohol in vivo from cases showing a Candida albicans dominated intestinal flora will not be able to surpass the normal alcohol metabolizing capacity of the liver. Thus, measurable concentrations of alcohol in the blood from such cases cannot be expected.

Isolation of Sporothrix fungorum from a 500-year-old mummy found in Greenland.

A 500-year-old mummy of a seven-month-old Eskimo infant recently removed from a tomb north of Umanak presented problems of preservation. Among these was fungal coating on the skin, especially on the face. The fungus was isolated and diagnosed as a Sporothrix fungorum. The skin was successfully treated with nystatine. The species Sporothrix fungorum isolated is considered to be very rare, having been reported previously only from Europe and South Africa, but never from Greenland.

Bovine protothecosis. A brief report of ten cases.

Prototheca zopfii was isolated repeatedly from milk samples from ten cows (of a herd of 192 dairy cows) with reduced milk yield and indurated mammary glands. The strain was moderately sensitive to streptomycin, polymyxin and gentamycin, but resistant or relatively resistant to other antibiotics and antimycotics commonly used in clinical practice. An attempt to treat the infection with Ethidium bromide, which was found effective in vitro, did not succeed. The number of Prototheca excreted decreased, but a complete cure was not obtained. In histological sections of the udder, Prototheca cells were demonstrated both intracellularly and interstitially.
