A comparison of an international experience for nursing students in developed and developing countries.

Theoretical perspectives and approaches to transcultural nursing have been developed and there are different options for teaching transcultural care. The opportunity for nursing students to gain healthcare experience in another country is one option. This article reports a study undertaken in Northern Ireland to evaluate outcomes of a 3-month international experience for undergraduate nursing students (n=74) and to assess differences between the experiences in developed and developing countries. Data were collected by questionnaire. The findings indicate a high impact on students' international perspective and career development. Students' understanding of cultural and political issues within Northern Ireland was enhanced.

Occupational stress in nursing.

This article reports the results of a study of occupational stress undertaken with a large sample of Northern Ireland nurses, including qualified staff (both community and hospital based) up to and including sister/charge nurses. This study formed part of a wider interprofessional study of nurses, social workers and teachers. Publications for the latter two professions, along with interprofessional comparisons, are in preparation and this present article focuses on the nursing cohort. The design and methods are described and demographic characteristics of the nursing sample are provided with their views about nursing. Stressors are identified in both professional and private lives. The effects of stress as manifested through the General Health Questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory are examined and nurses' views on various stress-coping strategies are discussed.

Graduate nurses in Northern Ireland: their career paths, aspirations and problems.

This paper is based on a survey of graduates from the B.Sc. in Nursing studies at the New University of Ulster (now the University of Ulster). Six cohorts, those entering between 1975 and 1980, were sent a postal questionnaire. The results cover the careers of these graduates and also describe their problems and their aspirations. The findings confirm those of other studies in relation to the clinical orientation of graduate nurses. Some respondents had positive views about graduate status, others had experienced prejudice and even hostility. Most respondents intended to pursue a lifetime career in nursing.
