Claude Bernard and pancreatic function revisited after 150 years.
In 1848, Claude Bernard described the lipolytic function of the pancreas. His experimental procedure was original and as he always affirmed, easily replicable. In this study we repeated the original Bernardian experiments for emulsification and saponification of fats, following the original descriptions from his laboratory manuscripts. The results were astonishingly similar to those obtained by Bernard, confirming the validity of his experiments and conclusions, as well as emphasising again his original concepts on the importance of experimental repeatability in scientific medicine. Considering the surgical difficulties we encountered, we must conclude that Claude Bernard required great manual dexterity to obtain these results without the benefit of modern technology and anaesthesia.

Salivary gland tumors in Malawi.
A study of 190 tumors of major and minor salivary glands seen in Malawi over a nine-year period showed an overall incidence rate similar to that in Western countries. However, submandibular and palatal tumors are relatively more common, parotid tumors more likely to be malignant, and submandibular tumors less likely to be malignant than in Western countries. No adenolymphomas were seen. Despite the long history given by many patients with pleomorphic adenomas, the rate of malignant change in these tumors was not high; the majority of carcinomas (16% of all tumors) appeared to rise de novo. Histologic features were similar to those of tumors from other countries but the occurrence of tyrosine crystals in 20% of the pleomorphic adenomas was unusual. Melanocyte colonization of a mucoepidermoid tumor and a carcinoma, both in the primary site and in metastases of a salivary gland tumor, has not been previously reported.

[Claudio Bernard and fat emulsion (or the Sleeping Beauty 150 years later)].
In 1848, Claude Bernard discovered the lipolytic function of the exocrine pancreas. His experimental procedure was very original and he always said that it was easily reproducible. This paper reproduces the experiments that Bernard made on the digestion of fat. The work is original because the experiments were taken from Bernard's personal manuscripts that are unpublished. The paper also deals with Claude Bernard's personal papers. Our results were like Bernard's: his experiments and conclusions were very truthful as well as his ideas on reproducibility in experimental medicine. The surgical part was not simple, so Claude Bernard probably was very skillful.
