Complement elevation in spinal cord injury.

Laboratory studies revealed an elevated complement in 66% of patients with spinal cord injury. It is postulated that the activated complement may be a component of self-feeding immunological mechanism responsible for the failure of regeneration of a mature mammalian spinal cord. There was no evidence that such an injury had any effect on pre-existing atopy.

Histamine flare, a neurovascular response.

It has been shown that the histamine flare depends on the integrity of sympathetic innervation and of connecting pathways between the sympathetic nervous system and higher centers. This conclusion was reached on the basis of lack of skin responses to exogenous histamine in 75% of patients with spinal cord injury in this study.
