Human bite marks in forensic dentistry.

The scientific examination of bite-mark evidence is fascinating and challenging. As the science continues to evolve with more precise and demonstrative methods of performing the investigations and development of research data on the individuality of human dentition, the value of bite-mark analysis in the legal system will continue to increase. A quality bite-mark injury pattern examined properly using validated scientific methodologies can assist society greatly in applying laws fairly.

Aging of bitemarks: a literature review.

The aging of bitemarks through the subjective interpretation of visual signs has created an area of controversy in the forensic science community. The healing dynamics of these bite wounds has been insufficiently studied and is poorly understood. A review of the literature related to bitemark aging was undertaken in an effort to summarize the currently published information on this misunderstood subject.

A practical technique for the fabrication of transparent bite mark overlays.

A quick, inexpensive, and accurate technique for generating transparent overlays, using office photocopy machines, for use in bite mark case analysis is presented. The critical step in the fabrication process involves determination of the accuracy of the product produced by the photocopy machine. A reliable method for making such a determination is discussed.

Familial multiple cervical paragangliomas: report of a kindred and review of the literature.

Heredofamilial paragangliomas account for less than 10% of those arising in the head and neck. Multiplicity, multicentricity, and bilaterality is roughly three times more common than in the spontaneous variety. Not unlike other hereditary neuroendocrine tumor syndromes, familial paragangliomas appear to follow an autosomal dominant transmission, with variable penetrance and expressivity. This article describes a surgical experience with nine bilateral, multicentric cervical paragangliomas (7 carotid body, 1 vagal, and 1 sympathetic) occurring in four siblings less than 35 years of age. The literature on familial paragangliomas of the head and neck is reviewed. The postulated genetic mechanisms accounting for these and other hereditary tumors are discussed. The clinical and surgical aspects of spontaneous and familial paragangliomas are compared.

An improved technique for bite mark impressions.

This article demonstrates a technique for making a custom tray over a bite mark and making an accurate impression of the mark. This technique is cleaner and easier than previously published methods, and causes no undue thermal trauma to living patients.

A photographic technique for the restoration of damaged radiographs.

Occasionally during identification efforts, the forensic science team will encounter radiographs needed for comparisons that are damaged and seemingly useless. The simplified darkroom technique presented will facilitate the recovery of useful information from such compromised radiographs on film.

Alpha-Glycerol phosphatase and glycerol kinase activities in tissues of the silkmoth Hyalophora cecropia during the larval-pupal transformation.

Magnesium metabolism has been studied in Hyalophora cecropia during the larval-pupal transformation (LPT) (Jungreis, A. M., Am. J. Physiol. 224: 27--30, 1973). Throughout this period, it accumulated in midgut (0.5 M at ecdysis), presumably as osmotically inactive Mg3(PO4)2. Glycerol accumulation in hemolymph was also first noted during this period. Since total alpha-glycerol phosphate present in hemolymph declined between the larval and pupal stages of development, the relationship between magnesium and alpha-glycerol phosphate metabolism was studied. Specific and total alpha-glycerol phosphatase (degradative) and glycerol kinase (synthetic) enzyme activities were measured in fat-body and midgut tissue throughout the LPT. At both feeding larval and diapause pupal stages in development in both tissues, total glycerol kinase activity is greater than that of alpha-glycerol phosphatase with degradative/synthetic activity ratios of 0.2--0.5. In fat body, ratios remained constant or shifted in the direction of synthesis during the LPT, whereas those measured in midgut tissue increased in the direction of degradation with a maximum ratio of 5.8 noted following spinning. The increase in degradative/synthetic activity ratios in midgut tissue is attributed to a greater rate of loss of glycerol kinase than alpha-glycerol phosphatase enzyme activity. Orthophosphate, presumably released from alpha-glycerol phosphate within the cells of the pharate pupal midgut tissue, combines with magnesium to form osmotically inactive Mg3(PO4)2 crystals.

Intraoral body-piercing: a case report.

Body-piercing is growing in popularity. Intraoral sites are being selected more frequently for piercing. A case of a lingual barbell is described.
