Bacterial flora in the external ear canal and in induced cholesteatoma in the Mongolian gerbil.

We report on the bacterial flora of the external ear canal and of induced aural cholesteatoma in 14 Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). In the control, nonmanipulated external ear canal, gram-positive and gram-negative organisms were isolated. In the contents of the cholesteatoma sac, only monomicrobial, gram-negative isolates were found; in each animal they were different from the isolates from the nonmanipulated external ear canal. Obligate anaerobes were absent in all cases. Ligation of the external ear canal in the left ear provoked cholesteatoma in all cases.

Appearance of ear tumors in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine when used as a model for colonic carcinogenesis.

One of the models of colon carcinogenesis in rats is produced by s.c. injections of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). This specific colon carcinogen provokes other tumors in the rat, notably intestinal tumors. Ear tumors are just marginally mentioned in the literature. We have studied the appearance and histologic characteristics of ear tumors produced by 19 s.c. injections of 21 mg/kg of DMH in 18 Sprague-Dawley rats: 15 tumors appeared in 13 ears of 10 rats (55% of the animals). Simultaneously there were 23 colonic tumors: four (26.6%) of the tumors were carcinomas, 10 (66.6%) papillomas and one (6.6%) pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. We conclude that ear tumors induced by DMH appear in 55% of the rats and that it is not possible to distinguish macroscopically in terms of size and aspect between benign and malignant lesions.

[Review of ORL manifestations in AIDS. Case series at the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital, Lleida].

The majority of patients suffering AIDS-syndrome present with ENT aspects, being the most prevalent lateral adenopathy of the neck firstly, followed by thrush, pharyngo-esophageal candidiasis and herpes simplex. Differences regarding the distribution in percentage in risk groups are signaled by the AA. between their own statistics and those of the americans writers.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome↗

[Recurrent polychondritis].

The interest of the relapsing polychondritis is specially due to its otolaryngological implications. The case reported evolved favourably and responded fairish to the corticoidtherapy. Nevertheless an assidous follow-up will be wise in order to stablish the pronostic in view of the outbreacks of the illness. The AA. compare the own case with others referred to in the literature.

Adult↗

[Tuberculous otitis media].

Report of a case of middle ear tuberculosis in an elderly woman with a chronic discharging ear withstanding the common treatment. The diagnosis could be made through examination of the pieces taken at surgery (tympanoplasty). The A. advice is to arouse suspicion when findings compatible with tubercular otitis are encountered, in order to treat wisely the patient and avoid complications.

Comments of the AA regarding the diagnosis and management of cholesteatoma and description of their current surgical procedure are presented.

[Inverted papillomas of the nasal sinuses].

After reviewing the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital's records, a total of ten cases of inverted papillomas were found. Nasal obstruction was present in 100% of the cases. External surgery was performed in 70% of these patients, finding that in 50% of them, the real size of the tumor was smaller than that show in the radiological study. After surgical treatment, only one of the patients developed a malignant tumor. Incidence of papilloma recurrence was 30%.

[Peritonsillar abscess: treatment guidelines].

A prospective study was carried out on 25 patients showing symptoms suggestive of peritonsillar abscess. Twelve patients were treated with i.v. antibiotics and three months later underwent tonsillectomy. Thirteen patients underwent acute tonsillectomy within 24-48 hours. In order to evaluate the benefits of acute tonsillectomy we compared three parameters; operation length, intraoperative bleeding and overall length of hospitalization.
