Is it food allergy? Differentiating the causes of adverse reactions to food.

Foods can produce adverse symptoms in various ways, and the patient's history can help determine whether allergy or some other mechanism is responsible. The history has limitations, however, as it is primarily subjective. Therefore, diagnostic confirmation is very important. Strict avoidance of the allergenic food is the primary course of treatment. Education is imperative to ensure that patients understand food labels and recognize the different names used to designate a specific food. Prompt treatment with epinephrine when an acute reaction occurs can make a life-or-death difference.

Practical considerations for managing asthma in adults.

Asthma is a common, chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways associated with pronounced health and economic consequences. Consistent and effective education that promotes an active partnership with patients remains the cornerstone for managing asthma. Identification and control of asthma triggers, regular monitoring of lung function, and adequate pharmacologic therapy are three other critical components. In this article, we describe several practical considerations for developing a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to asthma care that emphasizes patient education and strengthens the partnership between patients and health-care professionals.

Rhinitis and sinusitis: office management.

Rhinitis and sinusitis are problems that primary-care physicians frequently encounter. Although these disorders are not life threatening, they can result in considerable discomfort and decrease the patient's quality of life. Nasal and sinus symptoms are the leading cause of restrictive activity and loss of productivity at work, home, and school. The treatment of rhinitis and sinusitis is costly, and these disorders can also complicate other medical illnesses, which can become more difficult to treat. Upper airway symptoms can be a manifestation of a systemic disease. This article addresses the clinical management of these disorders, diagnostic tools, various types of these conditions, and available medical treatment.
