Relationships between seasonal changes in serum testosterone concentrations, scrotal circumference and sperm morphology of male wapiti (Cervus elaphus).

One 2-year-old and 4 adult (greater than 3 years old) wapiti were studied throughout 1 year. Serum testosterone concentrations, scrotal circumference and % normal spermatozoa in the ejaculate peaked around September. Testosterone levels fell sharply by November, but scrotal circumference declined less sharply and normal sperm production occurred until March. There were indications of a secondary peak in these values around February-March.

Hyaluronidase as an adjunct in an immobilizing mixture for moose.

Hyaluronidase was put into immobilizing syringes for 58 of 104 moose captured with a fentanyl/xylazine mixture. Induction times were measured for both groups and were related to injection site as well as drug mixture. Hyaluronidase-treated moose had significantly shorter induction times than others. Injection site also had a significant effect on induction times.

Tibiotarsal arthrodesis in a Moufflon sheep.

Restraint of a mature Moufflon sheep resulted in severe fracture and luxation of a previously osteoarthritic tibiotarsal joint. Arthrodesis was accomplished by means of internal pin fixation and an external fiberglass cast. After 3 months of hospitalization, the ram was returned to the original flock. Competition for dominance within the flock resulted in physical trauma to the ram. Seven months after surgery, the ram sustained a fractured ulna and died from exposure.

Capture myopathy in a moose.

Of 18 moose captured by dart immobilization from a helicopter, 1 became recumbent after release. Blood samples were collected at the time of capture and on the following 2 days. Serum creatine phosphokinase and glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase activities increased, and serum potassium concentrations decreased. Necropsy revealed extensive myopathy.
